    Hello there.

This is Arminius. Not the one form TWC, it's my other nickname in the french forums.
Well, if you have questions, just post them here.

    Little preview :
CATW was launched one year ago. The former goal was to have the lightest mod available with the maximum unit roasters (as rich as RS for exemple). Of course, a lot of brand-new skins were made (more than 1200), some units received four or more skins variants, only those where keeped for historical accuracy and quality.
Later, three new factions where choosed to replacing the roman families : Pergamon, the Illyrians and the Galatians. The last choice was not easy, as beeing a "mini-faction", but original. Now it's almost definitive.
All units come from RTW, BI and Alexander 3d models, so the .cas are lighter than brand-new models which are often not generated with lighter .cas models. Typical examples of the strange results of these practices are a seleukoi thorakitai argyraspidai (heavy javelin+sword) made with a dismounted pretorian cavalry... All is made by code, skins and alpha layers.

Now CATW 0.1 or "beta 1" is released, and downloadable in the CATW website (see after). It's a demo unit preview with 600+ units.
Later (may or june) a CATW 0.5 version will come, which will be a fully playable version (campaigns, even historical battles). It will not featuring the three new factions, or a new map at this stage. But this version will feature a lot of specific units (on per city) and a lot of new specific faction units and mercenaries, powerful rebel armies.

And later, a final version, CATW 1.0. Three new factions, max available units in EDU limit, brand-new map with 200 regions, and of course, 200 specific units. New IA, and improved naval battle system with historical-accuracy new units, among other things...

    Well, thank you guys.
I'm aware that this mod comes after far more famous and complete ones, on the near-same period (catw would rather begins in 300bc to include the last roman struggles with samnites (with 4 turn per year)). But the core of this mod is to have the lightest playable mod available with max units rosters and some of the finest skins. (In this case (which is my job), new different faces (one per unit), skins made with photos (pelts, clothes textures, authentic helmets, shields pics, armors, etc, that looks used and damaged, tired, instead of brand-washed bright colored uniforms... All in twice quality .tga than original ones). Well, i promise you mud, blood, dirt, sweat... and tears.

The CATW (see below) website is not up-to-date : It features the wole units rosters from the very first test, with max units and units rosters on the battlefield to test how the the mod could be light. This is just a custom battles demo, and is of course available on the website.
The new step is to feature a brand new mod with new rosters (theses reviews), lot of specific units, but original entries keeped in order to be 100% vanilla savegame compatible, and historical battles playable. (beta2, released this summer, end of june or july)

The final step will feature a brand new map (resized in the south and east, hibernia and scotland in the west, from mouths of the nile and ormuz strait to the whole india in order to acting the mauryan empire and some eastern semi-nomadic peoples and the powerful sakas rauka, indo-scyhians, bactrians, etc... The very first chosen factions to replace roman ones where the galatians, the illyrians, and Pergamum. But the first two are now more in a "mini-faction" project. There will be four times more mercenaries than in original mod and of course powerful independant (slaves) "mini-factions", twice more cities, and of course with accurate names (no more "domus dolcis domus")...
There will be also new portaits, music, etc, all to improving the gameplay.
Of course new AI, with existing codes as Darth formations, etc... or new ones. The numidians, portayed as a playable faction in beta 2 will be replaced by another one (unknown by now) in the final CATW 1.0.

A lot of work is awaiting the team, but there will be regular previews here.
You can suggest some powerful "states" or peoples in 300 bc. which could be playable in the final version. For exemple, two thracians peoples, odrysians in the south (under the rule of Lysimachos), and Getai in the north are in the present beta2. No more dacians, of course.

As factions choices, we thank about the Samnites, Greeks of Magna Grecia, the Bosphoran Kingdom, Syracusae, Aetolian league, Achean league, sarmatians, Indo-Scythian, Mauryans, Bactrians, the Kingdom of Saba, the Arverni (if Aedui is the "gallic faction" by default...), the Teutoni, Veneti, Lusotanann, Celtiberians, Paeonians, etc...

Yes, or just changing the topic title, removing the "?".
For the parthians, they are, of course, one of the playable faction in beta2 and with no doubt they will be also in the final 1.0.
The Indo-Scythian where powerful in the fourth century bc, but they where partly conquered by the mauryan kings and surrounded bu yuezhi and parthians in a small kingdom known as "sakastan", they still existed in 100 bc.
More interesting as a "mini-faction", since they where a semi-nomadic people, with a stronger infantry than saka rauka and other scythian peoples.

    Well, thx a lot, again.

I'm currently the only "full-time" modder, so CATW advancing slowly. The project had several previous issues, and the last one would feature a game based on the well-known "mundus magnus" map. The very first 100% playable version keep the original four roman factions (at the demand of most french fans). But the final version would have an unique spqr faction, with powerful threats in italy, as samnites (300 bc) and later, of course, epirus. This will be also if possible a 4tpy game, in order to have more detailled campaigns. The choices of the definitive post-roman factions are not yet arrested. Everything's possible. You can suggest yours in this topic.

    More previews to come.

    PONTUS

Pontic Thorakitai Argyraspidai fightning Elite seleucid romanized infantry.

The Pontic kingdom was not by far the biggest in 300 bc. But it was well-suited for commercial business and had a janus-like double-face, asiatic and hellenistic. The mithridatic dynasty was founded by a wise ruler, which keeped it alive during two and half centuries. Pontus army was more "persian" in some aspects than the seleucid empire. It was late implied in a massive serie of three conflicts, the "mithridatic wars", one of the fearest campaign series ever challenged by the romans in asia. The faction, i hope, will reflects this mixture of troops:

(Left to right, up to down, "fac" for faction, "spec" for region specific and "merc" well, you know..)
    - Pandotapoi (fac)
    - Thorakitai (fac)
    - Pontikoi Toxotai (levy)-(fac)
    - Pontikoi Thureophoroi (fac)
    - Agrianai Peltastai (fac)
    - Pontikoi Thorakitai Toxotai (fac)
    - Thorakitai Argyraspidai (fac)
    - Pontikoi Chalkaspidai (fac)
    - Pontikoi Leukaspidai (fac)
    - Kappadokioi Doryphoroi (fac)
    - Eastern Peltastai (fac)
    - Bythinioi Doryphoroi (merc)
    - Galatikoi Machimoi (merc)
    - Somatophylax hetairoi (bodyguard cav 2) (fac)
    - (ensigns)
    - Drepanophora Hamata (fac)
    - Torakitai Hippotoxotai (fac)
    - Kappodokioi Kontophoroi+basilikon Hippeis (gardes du corps1 - fac)

Very beautiful units you have made. i am looking forward for more news. by the way i would like to comment that instead of using the word ΠΟΝΤΙΚΟΙ

u should replace it with the word ΠΟΝΤΙΟΙ. that's the way we call them in Greece (ΠΟΝΤΙΚΟΙ is the word for mice (many mouse)

Wait, the cat will be released soon !
As the mod is beginning in 300 bc (with a 4tpy or even a 12Tpy campaign), it's very fond of greek warfare (as XGM) so your knowledge would be precious as many unit descriptions are in ancient greek. As you see for the scythians, units names are in greek because of their strong cultural connections with the greek black sea colonies... So thx and welcome in CATW (note the "CAT"W)...
