anyone can ask question
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
Because Theoden commanded him to do so
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
OK I tried...
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
So no one is going to answer this?
I'll throw in a hint then: He was a lesser Marshal in Theodred's command during the battles of the Fords of Isen.
If after this rather obvious hint no one has answered (answered, not answered correctly) in 24 hours from now, I'll give the answer and anyone else can ask a new question.
are you asking why he commanded the troops or why he commanded the troops especially on the left flank?
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
The question is why he commanded that part of the army. Not specifically why he commanded the left flank. For all we know, on another day he might have been on the right flank with the same troops, though I think that is very unlikely (for hierarchy reasons, though I'm speculating here). It's the soldiers that matter.
So he commanded the westfold troops because he had experience with them after defending the westfold... ?
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
well if you mean Erkenbrand, he stayed in Rohan to guard the backdoor, also he was kinda old...
I choose to die on my feet, rather than live on my knees!
Good enough. Theoden did indeed want someone of 'dignity and authority' to command the forces that were left in Rohan. And Erkenbrand was indeed quite old.
So Grimbold commanded the Muster of the West-Mark because there were really no others as qualified for the job as he, as Theodred (the second Marshall and commander of the West-Mark) had died and Erkenbrand was indeed left behind. Eomer and Elfhelm had their commands; the Musters of Kings Land and the East-Mark respectively.
But anyway, it's your turn. Finally
Okay thanks you sure know a lot...
anyway I give the permision for question to anyone.)

time to revive gents
for the very first time, I'll make a question out of the movies.
- What was the fate of Saruman? Where did he meet it?
That's not hard of course, but you need to have watched the extended version.
