Right...sorry for being such a dick but the point of this thread is what ?

The Eastern Roman Empire at Constantinople called themselves Roman and there empire the Roman Empire. Another date that can be seen as the fall is when Herclius became Imperator he change the official language to Greek.

The Turks even called their new possession in Asia Minor (Turkey) Rum after what if I remember right was Rome in either their tongue or the local Byzantine Latin/Greek dialect (Whatever as I can't remember:P).

You could also say Rome fell with the conquest of the Empire of Trabizond in 1461. Not only that, Mehmed assumed the title of Roman Caesar and his line then claimed lineage with Byzantine royalty.

So perhaps Rome fell after World War I when the Ottomans fell?

Exactly. It was his right after conquering Constantinople, not only that Ottoman Sultans carried royal Byzantine blood with them, remember Murad I. People see Fatih Sultan Mehmet II The Conqueror the person who killed the romans, but on the contrary. I think Fatih gave the Roman Empire new life and a new religion, the Ottoman Empire saw them selves as the sucessors of the Romans.

You could say Rome never fell. The Germans and Russians took on the word "Caesar", as Kaiser and Czar(Tsar). I believe the Russians called themselves the new Roman empire, as protectors of Orthodox, and original, Christianity, and the Germans called themselves the 3rd Reich, following the Roman and Holy Roman Empires.

I personally think the state left over from the eastern roman empire (which officially became greek under heraclius, who was too sick to fight off the arabs), was destroyed by the fourth crusade. I think, after that point, the "Empire" of Nicaea and the following "Roman Empire" were really not distinguishable from any other european kingdom asides from possessing Constantinople. And even then...the Italian presence in the city was unavoidable.
