Pyrrhic Victory

v 1.1

Out of boredom and a desire to play as Epirus in RTW, I made this minimod over the last couple days.
And have now spent several more days updating it to include a new 'Egypt', plus many other small tweaks that enhance your gaming experience.

info:
- The Romans appear as a single faction; using the Julii
- Epirus replaces the Brutti, complete with skins and UI's
(They have the same unit roster as Macedonia, except get elephants with advanced trade buildings)
- Egypt has been changed to the Ptolemaic Kingdom, with new skins and UI's to boot
(Their roster is pike phalanx based, with Egyptian locals acting as auxiliaries)
- All factions are playable
- Complete text changes/additions to reflect faction modifications
- New maps for the campaign faction selection screen
- A few new settlements have been added, and a few others slightly modified
- New win conditions for several factions
- Changed starting territories of some factions
- Seleucids and Parthia use the correct indian elephant model
(This means the Seleucids only get War Elephants)
- Various other small tweaks

Screens:

Download HERE (size approx. 18mb)

Extract to your desktop and follow the readme. If you have the old Pyrrhic Victory, I would advise deleting it's 'epirus' mod folder in your Rome - Total War folder, as this version is drastically different.

This is modfoldered and will not affect your original game files.

known bugs:
For some reason, obviously relating to the massive change to Egypt's infrastructure, when playing as any faction except Egypt you cannot double click on any Egyptian settlement. Doing so will swiftly bring you face-to-face with your desktop. All I can say for now is don't click on any Egyptian settlements unless playing as Egypt.

Good job Comrade  +rep

Dude, this is the exact same as Roma Surrectum but Roma Surrectum is more new factions and more in depth as a total conversion of RTW. I'm not putting you down, actually I'm saying you're in the same ball-park as a great Mod. Check out Roma Surrectum!

Thank you. Yes, I am familiar with RS, but I just like to maintain the look and feel of the vanilla game and keep it simple, hence a minimod. :)

Here's an idea:
Why don't you, with the slot freed up by the Scipii, make Illyria into a faction. The CA wanted to do it.

Love the mod by the way. :thumbsup2:

It's a great mod :)

But I'd say Pergamum was a greater power than the Illyrians were at the time.

Curse my none-existent modding skills!

Well there's no reason why Pergamum can't be included too (Senate slot).
Still, I think it should be included in the next release.

EDIT: Or, better yet, make a seperate Illyrian mod!

This message was written while the back of my computer screen was on my lap, and the keyboard going up.

I'd say, Pergamum and Illyria as new factions, even tough even a massilian or syracusan faction would be interesting to usa.

But, for the moment, it's my believe that it would be a priority to give to epirus proper faction symbols :)

I really love this mod! I enjoyed destroing the Greeks and the Macedons! Epirus rules!:viking:
Huzzah! It's also very fun to play with Epirus on VH/VH then invade Italy and push your way to Rome. :thumbsup2

@ you other gentlemen: I've heard those suggestions before; if I find the time, motivation, and source material I might consider putting something together. :shifty:

If you did that, it'd be awesome. :worship:

I'd have suggestions for an Attalid (Pergamum) Unit roster (based on Vanilla units).

Why not posting them here, so that we can discuss about it? :)

Fine...

Barracks;
Militia Hoplites

Hoplites
Phalanx Pikemen
Silver Shield Pikemen

Stables;
Light Lancers
Greek Cavalry
Macedonian Cavalry
Companion Cavalry
(possibly Cataphract Cavalry?).

Practice Range;
Peltasts
Slingers
Archers
Onagers

My reasoning:
-Pergamum was technically a City-State that had a tradition of Hoplite warfare, but was definitely at this point using Phalanx pikemen (like most of the Hellenic world).
-The Attalids aided the Romans against the Seleucids, at which their cavalry made all of the difference.

Mmh, this seems fine to me!

But, just to create some variety between the factions, why not giving them the pontus' bronze shields instead of the silver shields? Even the macedonian cavalry could be replaced with,, I don't know, a greek heavy cavalry (a cavalry unit with the model and skin of the evolved greek general's unit model) :)

What do you think about it?

Nice idea, if you have the skins ;)

I stuck to existing vanilla units to avoid too much work. As for Bronze Shields, I think it'd be more realistic to have Silver Shields. The Angyraspids (bad spelling) were the elites of the Hellenistic world. The Attalids used a similar military machine to the Seleucids.

Yeah, but the argyraspides (:P) weren't the only elite unit...the chalkaspides as well was some sort of point unit in the hellenistic armies! :)

silver shields changed to bronxe shields, then its better

I ain't saying your wrong lads. :)

I'll look into there military structure, but from what I've read they had Angyraspids. Bronze Shields were specific to Pontus.

it's not really that! bronze shields weren't something unique of pontus...

I always thought they were :hmm:

Don't really matter, Bronze/Silver, there all the same :P

yeah, apart from that, i suggested to sue bronze shield from the pontus roster just to add some variety to the mod! :)
