1. My priests always have low piety. How do I increase it? I tried moving the priests to foreign non-Christian lands, but all that does was gave them odd traits that takes away piety.

2. How do I recruit bishops? How many can I recruit per city/castle?

1. Use priest to denounce heretics and convert the population to get piety
2. Bishops can't be recruited but you can get them by build cathedral then there is a chance that the next priest you recruit is a bishop.

when i send my priests into muslim lands, send them in at least pairs, i prefer one of the two to be a cardinal in case my preist turns heretic and the odd triats dont take away from peity, they increase unorthodaxy, your getting the lack of faith traits

I never heard about a cathedral being a requisite for getting cardinals.
The only things that are really important is that you need a priest with a high piety value (converting provinces, burning heretics and witches etc.) and an open position among the cardinals.
A good relationship with the pope probably helps as well but the rest is pretty much a waiting game.
It pays to get a Theologians Guild by the way (always train your priests Guilds city), your priests are starting off with a piety bonus that can seriously speed up the learning process.

I have a monopoly on the college of cardinals in my english campaign. my relations with the pope are good but at least 3 other actions have equally as good relations; im at war with 3 christian factions, and relations with the rest are no better than "so-so." however, when an election kicks in, since there are more english cardies in the college thanthe others, an english cardie always wins. it's wonderful.

haha, in SS 6.0 Danish campaign every cardinal is Danish and all the catholic factions are still around lol, Even the pope is danish lol

in SS 6.1 my norwegian assasins killed everyone in the college of cardinals after i got excommunicated.

3 different things. he was clearly talking about bishops which you get if you have a cathedral and build your priests there (who come out as bishops then...)

1. piety is increased with time if the priest is active (converting population). starting piety is affected by level of the church in the settlement and if your nations controls a theologians guild (and its level of course)

2. bishops are recruited in cathedrals, you can potentially have as many bishops as your agent limit is for priests (minus any cardinals you have)

p.s.: like samir said bishops and cardinals are two completely different things and shouldnt be confused. a bishop is a priest who has a high piety and a different title (i think the trait bishop gives some bonuses too). a cardinal is a priest who can become the pope (if he is among the candidates) and gets to vote who becomes pope. he usually has very high piety (6-7 up) and otherwise behaves like a priest (or bishop) would.

Move your priests to any region that has below 40-50% Christian belief and execute as many heretics as you can.For example if you are playing Spain or Portugal, rush your priests south to the Moorish regions. But also be carefull because low piety, distance and low Christian belief my transform your priest to heretic:).

Hmm, interesting... Looks like there finally is something left that I haven't discovered in M2TW yet...
But does it matter in the end? I guess they get a small piety bonus but is that it? Because becoming cardinal obviously isn't limited to bishops.

heretics cannot convert Cardinals and have a harder time converting Bishops than they have with priests, even Bishops with low piety.

also Bishops are the highest rank that orthodox priests can reach.

i thought bishop was a random triat given upon birth, because i made one in a church once, and by birth i mean recruitment

Spam priests in one city. Build every churchy structure asap in that city. Make sure the city is growing fast in population by putting a good general in there, lowering taxes, and improving farming. Do not accept any guilds in that city other than theologian guilds. By the time you get the second level and have a cathedral you will be pumping out level 6 to 8 priests. I have had one become a cardinal on the turn he is ordained. If you help other factions' high level priests and cardinals to their final reward, then you can have complete domination of the College of Cardinals by turn 50.

Ummm.... how I usually do is put one priest in each and every city. Should I put/recruit them all in one city? Should they be IN the city or should they be outside the city but in the city's region?

If you recruit priests in cities that have a cathedral they start as bishops and have a minimum of four piety. If that city has a Theologians guild (or you have the HQ) the priests will have a change to have some extra piety. On some occasions I have recruited priests who started with 10 piety.

Cathedral or above gives the Bishop trait which gives extra piety. Each stage of a Theologians guild also increases piety.

Without them, your best bet is to leave them in other religion's lands and let them convert about 50% of the population. They tend to get the "Enemy of Heresy" trait after a while which gives +3 piety. If you can then burn one random heretic thats an extra +1, which gives about 5 or so, the minimum requirement for Cardinals iirc.

Herectics are sometimes hard to find... And the few that I found are always next to my assassins haha

i think on some mods theres an upgrade so orthodox factions can be promoted to matriach (orthodox equivilant to a carnadal)

Like someone mentioned before me, if you want to ensure more piety for your clergymen, build Theologian Guilds wherever you are offered them. If you are lucky you can get the TG Headquarters at your capitol.
