I remember reading about this a long time ago if I recall, but cannot find it any longer.

I'm having a portrait CTD whenever I use "past_leader" for a character_record in the family tree or a new faction leader. It only happens with my large Scotland family tree. The others show past_leaders, or new leaders no problem.

I believe is is narrowed down to the leader portrait with the coat of arms blip in the upper corner, whenever hovered over

, but not entirely sure, but I can view the family tree without issue when not using any "past_leader" or without recieving a new king with that emblem.

The trace log final entries:
Code:
11:37:54.410 [system.io] [info] open: found mods/Albion/data/ui/northern_european/portraits/family/dead/wife.tga (from: C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War)
11:37:55.657 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

Possible format or size issue with the portrait - upload the original for a check. The faction symbol is from an interface graphic, if you had problems with that file you would have problems in a number of places. Just to be sure upload the sharedpage_01 file of that faction's culture as well. Include the complete descr_strat file (crash version) as well.

The graphic files are fine.

I initially thought it might be a problem of missing TABs but then you have the same formatting for england which also has a 'past_leader' entry - and you mentioned that only scotland gives problems.

Which leads me to a gut assumption: the scottish family tree is simply too complex to handle the additional 'stuff': 43 character_records for family members plus named_character entries, 25 family entries.

I don't think the 'relative' order has any impact - after all you don't have a problem with it when you omit the past_leader entry.

Well, reducing it had zero effect,

When hovering over the dead father as 'past_leader'.

Code:
23:53:38.934 [system.io] [info] open: found mods/Albion/data/ui/northern_european/portraits/family/dead/son.tga (from: C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War)
23:53:40.540 [system.rpt] [error] Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit.

descr_strat
Code:
character_record Alexander_II, male, age 76, dead 25, past_leader
character_record Mary, female, age 64, dead 36, never_a_leader
character_record Margaret_England, female, age 34, alive, never_a_leader
character_record Alexander_Scotland, male, age 10, dead 0, never_a_leader
character_record David_Scotland, male, age 7, dead 1, never_a_leader
character_record Patrick, male, age 5, dead 1, never_a_leader
character_record Margaret_II, female, age 16, dead 0, never_a_leader
relative, Alexander, Margaret_England, Margaret_II, Alexander_Scotland, David_Scotland, Patrick, end
relative, Alexander_II, Mary, Alexander, end

I even tried renaming the northern_european ui/potraits folder so it returns to southern_european, and removing custom portrait for Alexander - still crashes.

I was thinking of a name\title issue because when you hover over a dead leader it shows his title. It's this entry in text\expanded:

{EMT_SCOTLAND_FORMER_FACTION_LEADER_TITLE}King

Please check if it exists.
