Civ 5

While I agree, the differences are pretty glaring, especially if your a skilled a player. Its not the difference between one Civ getting +1 attack and the other +1 defense, its the difference between one having bonuses that are useless and one having one thats overpowering.

I've noticed. But... whatever. Challenge is fun.

You'd be surprised. I've met more than my fair share of people who do literally nothing but this, on every single one of their games, but especially Civilization.

- Start game
- Make a new game
- Put it on Chieftan, or anything easier if possible
- Disable everything but Conquest/Domination victory
- Steamroll the entire map
- REPEAT THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.

Why?! Why do they do this?! How on earth does it not get boring?! And when I ask them if they would like to bump up the difficulty up a notch, they freak out and say that they're going to lose.

I don't know. Some people are seriously scared to death of any sort of challenge. My roommate is a perfect example of this, and when I ask him why he does it, he literally says "I'm not as gamer as you, I don't have your leet gaming skills."

Gaming skills? It's Civilization. Give me a break.

i play on King, it's generally not a problem for me to keep up with the rest or pass them completely, it's just the one or two that start to skyrocket that worry me. if they're on the other side of the world and i can't stop them early, gg.

by the way, loving the new update. i enabled the score list, so it always shows up without looking at the diplomacy overview. having the ability to disable unit cycling is a godsend as well. i like to command my units by their proximity to the camera, unit cycling used to jump all over the map and it was annoying.

After playing this for a while even though I think this game is terrible I can't stop playing it. Its at least better than Civ 3 IMO but the late-game turns are twice as bad and I have a 4ghz quad core.

This game is going to require a lot of patches, er i mean expansion packs, to get going. Almost forgot that Firaxis charges us for patches there for a second.

Its silly that the AI has to cheat in order to not fall insanely behind the player. I hate that in games like this, cheating to make up for poor AI.

When Civ 3 came out I got so frustrated with it that I went back to SMAC. I can't stop playing this one and I have Fallout New Vegas which I like a lot more. Still played Civ 5 all weekend.

so far, what are all your favorite map types to play on? and if there are any special settings, which?

i liked Lakes for awhile with small oceans, but now i'm on Pangae and i'm liking it even more.

My favorite is the Huge Earth map with all civs and all city-states on Prince or higher. It really gives that "World at War" feeling.

I'm keeping my eye on Ghandi though. I don't trust him:shifty:

Mah favourite map is Archapelgo.
Especially when playig England....havin bult the Great Lighthouse monument.

Anyone else find it impossible to keep happiness with a huge empire?
It just doesn't make sense. People who live in Russia aren't pissed off because Russia is such a large country.
Brazillians don't hate Brazil because it covers so much land.
Us Australians aren't unahppy because we live in such a huge country.

Most space of those three countries is also completly "empty" :p (siberia, amazon, lots of desert)

you have to devote some time into the right social policies, luxury resources, and happiness buildings. have to throttle down your blitzkrieg, y'know?
what DOES piss me off is the rule of not being able to raze a city just because it was a capital. is there an option in the game to take that off? not being able to raze city-states is annoying, and being forced into building a courthouse is a huge time-sink and money-sink.

This is probably my biggest gripe with the game now. When I go for the domination victory I want to totally annihilate the other civs and always raze all their other cities to the ground. If I like the territory I'll just build my own city there instead.

In terms of favorite maps I love archipelago, I just like the fact that most every nation has its own little island to develop and maximize the resources on before any serious conflicts break out. Though I might try the lakes map soon because I freaking love using the Aztecs and their floating gardens, lake tiles are so damn valuable to the aztecs with floating gardens.

Playing on the Terra map, I find "colonizing" the new world not to reward-able unlike our TW games. There is too much space to build on the "old world" so why even bother sending a settler on the new world?

Yeah....but People still live in Siberia, People still live in the Deserts out west.
I mean, ahv e you ever heard a man from Moscow Say.
"Man, I :wub:ing hate Russia, we just have way to many square kilometers of land!"

Yes, but then the happiness eventually dwindles (i have almsot every resource) because My cities keep growing. THe Policies barly help at all. If maybe there was one that said "Decrease unhappiness of population by 25% it would actually be useful.
I don't here any Americans saying America sucks because there a few hundred million people living there or that theres Hundreds of cities.
So it's got no real world comparison.

it's not supposed to be a simulation of the world, although realistically squalor would cause unhappiness. anyway with population growth your production, gold and food increase, so there HAS to be some sort of negative to counteract all these bonuses. you can use the newly acquired production & gold and invest them into coliseums, theaters, etc.

there is a social policy under Piety that reduces unhappiness of your overall population of non-occupied cities by 25% or so. i've used it before and it has given me a whopping 20 happiness (but this was with a number of cities so it's usefulness only grows the more cities you have)!

For some reason my game is bugged - whenever I selected random civilization it makes me play Russia.

"Random please".

"Russia."

"No I played them last time.

"Россия!"

So I actually did. Their unique building is pretty cool, as is their civ power. I hate how you spawn on tundra and desert but whatever.

My new love is for the Mongols. Their Keshiks are the best! They can move five spaces, they can move after attacking, and they have a ranged attack of 13! Their Khans (replacements for Great Generals) heal adjacent units by 2HP and have 5 movement. Their power, Mongol Terror, is great for ripping up city-states.

Got to remember saving on this game. I was using the English on normal difficulty. Year is 1500, declared war on Russia and took one of their cities and raze the others but they are not yet dead though. Got a settler halfway through the ocean tothe New World but CRAP my game crashed and my last save was like 1200s.

question, i'm playing on a Large Pangaea map, and the game has placed Ramkhamhaeng at the other side of the world. there are a lot of civs in-between us. in Civ 4 i could simply send my army through the end of the map closest to me and wind up right next to the civ at the other side of the world (since it's a globe). apparently they scrapped this awesome feature for Civ 5, so i'm wondering exactly how i can stop Ramkhamhaeng. it's weird because he keeps appearing in all of my games and starts climbing through the score list pretty quickly, AND they put him as far away as possible from me so it's incredibly hard to wage war on him no matter what he has. any suggestions? i don't think i should kill all the civs in the way one by one, as it'll be the modern era by the time i get to him, and he'll probably be way too strong by then. i'm playing on King so they get those crazy bonuses.

Turn off Start Bias.

On a side note, Mongols are tough with their unique ability and their units. Never had to build so many spearmen in my life when I ended up next to them.

You should be able to sail off the map edge and pop up on the other one.

You'll need Caravels/Frigates + upwards though.

The earlier ships cant sail on the deep ocean tiles.
