Row-by-row firing was more effective with early gunpowder weaponry since it took so long to reload. Nocking an arrow doesn't take so long, though, and any benefit gained from using a row-by-row formation with archers would be minimal. It might help when using fire arrows though, since they're slower, but that would defeat the point of balancing fire arrows by making them slower.
