Hello, on large battles, 2v2+ I am getting an annoying stuttering, my fps is fine but units animation stutter continuously when in melee fighting, I have done some research and tried these two possible fixes

Neither has fixed my issue, I tested running vanilla rome2 with the same amount of units and did not have stuttering issues (although I am aware that the units would have had less individual soldiers) I am curious to what is the cause of this, I suspect it is the amount of men in each unit. Are the any other fixes I have missed? Is this a known problem? Even if its unfixable Im still interested to know what causes this

Using latest videocard drivers, latest version of DeI, GPU and CPU temps are fine

win7
8GB system memory
i5 @ 3.40ghz
AMD radeon HD 7970 3GB

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you

I forgot to mention that changing the video options does nothing, on low to ultra I still get the exact same stuttering

It sounds like CPU overload to me, which is largely a limitation of the warscape engine. I find reducing unit detail (to high) eases the load on the CPU a lot in a big battle. But you are already changing that in global video settings? Hmm..:hmm:

I have the same system specs as you and I am in the same boat. Sometimes it is so bad that the battle timer ticks over really slow (1 game second for 3 real seconds).

CA put a limit on how much memory can be spent on animations, that is why game itself has good FPS, but animations are stuttering. For me lowering particle effects helps a lot with it, and if that not helps, you can always tick unlimited memory out for the time of stuttering. Once enough of units will be dead, it will be gone. Remember that units in DeI are pretty much double the size of vanilla units, so 2v2 in DeI terms is like 4v4 on vanilla.

It is your CPU man, if you want to run more units at the same time, upgrade it. I have i7-4770 and I can run around 25 000 units on battlefield, than as you call it stuttering begins.
If you want to run really huge battles, buy some extreme CPU.

Wait so ticking unlimited video memory swaps crappy stuttering for poor fps? God if I knew that I'd still be playing Rome 2 now...

What type of memory are we talking about? ram or vram?

unfortunately, for me, changing these two video options does not stop stuttering

No available option can change unit stuttering. That's what it is like for me. The only option is to have less men on the field of battle and that's it.

I am using an i5 4670k @ 4,2Ghz and I can't even play 30vs30 without stuttering. Sounds like crying, but I actually think that's the point from where Rome 2 actually becomes interesting when formation and map control play a way bigger role.

This is exactly the problem upgrade to a good CPU and get more RAM with good MHZ

Rome2 can take advantage of hyperthreading? RomeII isn't using anywhere near 8gb of ram on my system. Im not going to add more ram or an i7 since its pointless.

This has been an issue for quite some time. It is not your PC in any way. This is CAs issue but they are working to fix it. We have some posts over at the official Rome 2 forums on it. They asked us for replays and we have provided them with some but I encourage you guys to do the same, it may help them fix it faster. Anyway, they are aware of it and hopefully we see a fix soon! =)

Here is the main thread on the issue, note 'process B' means they have been able to replicate the problem and are working with the devs on implementing a fix: thread

Should go into your redist file in your rome 2 folder and re-install all necessary dx files by using "DXSETUP". just to make sure you're up to date.

Also when this problem happens you should open up your task manager into resource monitor and under CPU tab check to see if all your cores are being fully utilized or not.

In the meantime, it might be a good idea to just scale back your unit size settings to High, rather than Ultra. You will end up with roughly the same amount of units you would have in vanilla Rome 2.
