Alternative to RTW 2

Why not try RTW '1' and a decent Mod.....

Like Roma Surrectum II :whistling

Well there is King Arthur II. Its only the main British island, though. But when you start playing its a lot similar to Rome II. For instance capture points. Tech tree more or less the same. You research a building tech tree then you actually build the building. But unlike Rome II, King Arthur II is an actual fantasy game so magic skills make sense.

Best it to wait for EB II for medieval 2.

It's a game ala Imperivm Civitas, a city building mainly. We have not a decent alternative to TW games (real time battles + "grand-campaign"). That's the great problem indeed.

I'll probably go back to playing Shogun 2. It has a very good medieval Japan feel with the stylized artwork and music. All I see in my Rome 2 German barbarian campaign is ugly clumps of green representing forests.

Surly this isn't comparing I to II.

Of course not, nothing compares to the epic fail of RII, but still I can't go back any more. If ROme I's AI (especially in diplomacy) was on Med II's level, it would be okay. Oh and if it wasn't for the hardcoded limits.

You really need to install a mod and find out what you're missing.

I missed nothing, I played Roma Surrectum II and I loved it. Truely a stunning work. Still, after some time, the flaws of the engine bother me too much.

I found one from this web site a open source game O.A.D.
While the graphics are nothing like RTW 2 I am sure the game play would be better.

Actually, they market that game as an RTS. Which total war games are not, they're not really even comparable. Imagine starcraft with hoplites, that's probably how 0ad going to be, not that it doesn't look good.

Obviously you don't get the point.
I get that you missing out because many mods are able to cover up the misfortunes of the engine and they do it quite well.
Such as Darthmod and its BAI scripts that would have you losing many an epic battle.

The Total War series is considered both RTS and TBS hence battle and campaign.

And yes, at below. Hegemony is awesome.

This looks like a straight rip off of the AoE games... only a lot worse, just saying.

Try De Bello Mundi for Medieval Kingdoms.

for me it's gonna be fifa14/world of tanks/europa universalis4 (which i have barely touched).

might check out if there are any new mods for kindgdoms...

0 AD is just like Age of Empires, horribly boring skirmishes with like 50 men. This is the reason why I switched to total war in the first place, so no, it isn't a good alternative.

I felt that Darthmod empire seriously nerfed the difficulty of that game, and I never really bothered with it for shogun 2 because I thought vanilla was very good.

Not by me. I think battles without the strategy map are dishwater dull. The continuity of your army from meta to micro is fairly unique to TW in my experience. Not to mention that there are many core mechanics in TW battles that are sadly lacking in the vast majority of most if not all RTSs (morale, terrain, unit shield mechanics)
