So I was thinking about interpretation of Poland in Total war, and I think than neither vanilla medieval 2 nor stainless steel gave Poland justice. So here's my thoughts about this subject. I think that Poland is in very interesting place on the map just between western and eastern Europe, so there can be found influence of both part of medieval Europe armament in polish armies. So I would suggest to divide Poland to two major parts Silesia(west) and Mazovia(east), with first one having western looking units and other having eastern looking units. ( I’m speaking of course about elite AoR type units like mounted and dismounted knights ) Something like this:

West:

Of course this would apply only to something about mid 14th century, because when plate hits the fan all polish armors looks similar to each other:

And I have idea about faction specific unit too, actually I have two ideas. First is “Drużyna książęca” or druzhina (dukes fellowship) there were elite warriors, retinue in service of a duke by who there were paid(mostly because only dukes or princes could afford to buy full armor and other equipment for his troops). Most important part of “Drużyna książęca” were “pancerni” ("armored companion") they were heavy cavalry. My second idea is Order of Dobrzyń, this was the only military order that was created on polish lands (1216), its duty was to defend Mazovia and Kuyavia from Baltic Prussian raids. However at 1257 there are non known living knights of the order, last trail of brothers of Dobrzyń is from 1237 when grave of Henry from Żygocina is found, he is believed to be last member of the order. Personally I think it would be good idea to include those knights as very expensive AoR unit/units, despite that order had pretty short career, why don’t give them a fair chance in game to survive ;]

But what about low tier units? Well I found this:

125- peasant infantry from 1400, 126 urban infantry from 1430
Ok. enough talk about possible roster ( I don’t want to make this post three pages long :P )

Finally I want to mention two things. Founder of the Polish state Mieszko marry his daughter Świętosława (Sigrid) to the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard (966). Mieszko's daughter would later give birth to Cnut the Great, king of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and conqueror of England. It is likely that the Polish-Norse relationship was a result of earlier trade and cooperation. I don’t say that should be Vikings in polish roster but I thing that in would be nice if some Norse units was available as mercenaries on polish lands. Last thing, Duke Henry of Sandomierz ventured to the Holy Land in 1153-1154 and took part in the Crusade under the command of King Baldwin III of Jerusalem. Henry close affiliation to crusading resulted in the establishment of a commandery of the Hospitallers (between 1154 and 1166) in Zagość. So this could be made into in game event in 1153 massage would appear that one of the generals want to go to holy land fight with the Saracens and he ask you to finance his quest if player agrees to this general would disappear for couple of turns, and after he comeback from the crusade he would have few hospitaller units with him and possibility would appear to build hospitaller chapter house in one of the cities( I know something like this was in Britannia campaign you could send one of yours generals to a crusade and later he would returne with few templars units with him )

So what do you think hm ?;]

P.S: All pictures are from books about polish medieval armies.

Great post :D And some great points.

In the first picture there is a eastern looking guy on a horse, he doesn't look very polish, is he some random allied steppe warrior?

Thanks man ;]

Dzięki ;]

We did consider the order of Dobrzyń as a unit but they were so few numbers and didnt last very long. Really think its worth adding?

Well... yes, I know they weren’t very numerous, but you can handle this in many ways, like for example you can put restrictions that player can have only like two units of knights of Dobrzyn at the same time, or they can be reward units from council. Order had few members because teutonics were more popular, but if ( theoretically ) Poland went on war with them fairly early on in campaign maybe that could give order of Dobrzyń chance to expand.

Ok and here is something new ;] :

And now bonus, something fun to watch and listen to ;]
This is heavy matal version of Bogurodzica the oldest Polsih hymn, it was sang by Polish knights before battle of Grunwald

Here is few clips and promos from reenactment of Battle of Grunwlad from 2010

Here is Animated history of Poland by Tomasz Bagiński ( he created cinematics for The Witcher)
The Millennium Parade - 1,000 anniversary of Poland, only good thing about communist Poland, we had kickass parades ;]

Hi guys, I'd just like to contribute a more authentic version of the Bogurodzica that perhaps can be used for Poland in-game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgtTapXGWXA

Off topic: Youtube is also a great resource for Byzantine music/chants, like the Troparion of the Holy Cross (written for Basil II and is used in the Orthodox Church to this day).
