For the Byzantine Imperial Family, im wondering how it works as it seems kind of random. Theres an Emperor, then Co-Emperor, then one can be regent. And what happens to the emperors heir as the co-emperor becomes emperor :wtf: Can someone explain how byzantine succesion works, thanks

So the 1st Emperor doesnt have any children? Because wouldnt his children be the next Emperor. And how do they choose the next co-emperor

the term co-emperor comes from the word "symbasileus", as it is used in-game, which was often, though not always, the title given to the man chosen to inherit the empire as the next emperor. if a father wanted his son to rule after him, he would raise his son to the level of co-emperor in order to prepare him for the monumental task of governing an empire. also, by bestowing the title, it was clear to the nobility & senators who the next emperor would be. don't be confused, though; despite it translating to co-emperor, it does not mean they were equals in terms of power. The emperor was ruler. It's very similar to what Augustus did for Tiberius in the latter years of his life; giving his heir the positions/powers that he himself had occupied/used as Princeps, thus marking him as the next Princeps.

regents are rulers outside of the established blood line.

but yeah, in terms of game mechanics, it's the same as every other faction. it's based upon whether or not the leader has a son of-age, if not it goes to whoever has the most authority.

About the heir thing, if King has no son of proper age, the heir is familymember with highest authority rating..

But if king's son gets to proper age before king dies would it be possible to get him to be the next heir? With ancillary perhaps?
If familymember with highest authority rating dies, is the next heir kings son or fm's son?

No!
After your King dies the next heir is beeing chosen!
If one or two years later your "King-of-choice" comes to age you have to kill the current heir if you want to change that!
No chance to change the heir!

PS: some time ago i have found traits/ancs that say something like: "former heir" or "Regent" or something like that... so I could be wrong or its just unfinished stuff ( i bet its the second one )
