is it just me or do merchants genarate very low florins per turn 2-6
am i doing somthing wrong?

depends on the resource and on the merchant i think. it varies with me too, from 6 to 30+ florins per turn, also the more merchants u have on the same resource the more money they make

Try looking for better resources, and the farther they are, the better.

It also depens on the experience of a given merchant. I was able to generate 200+ florins with my best ones.

thats kind of interesting, i remember in mtw1 things like monesteries, and grand mosques would generate little tiny amounts of money like 30-60.
And the poorest farming area would have farms generate only about 60, sometimes less.

Please do tell how to really make use of them, I've been able to generate something like 30-50 florins per merchant.
But I think that merchants have an upkeep cost of 100? What's the point then? Enlight me :p

They are just useless. As diplomacy is. This game is only good for multiplayer fights.

Merchants have an upkeep of 0, so as long as they are on a resource they will always make money.

Thanks, that makes sense. So I'll just have to spam them around the world. Buahahaa! =)
Bad that they seem to be often assassinated or driven out of business by other merchants.
I'll go looking for some gold..

Merchants are too much work to make a measurable amount of money with.

A merchants guild in the town they were produced seems to help them greatly, as it gives them extra experience.

The reason you are getting only 3-6 florins is because you are probably selling to the cities where the item is found. Go to the far countries and you can get around 20-30 florins a turn. The highest I have ever seen is silk which ran very high but seemed kind of useless. Anyways just move to a far country. ;)

I´m getting about a 1000 florins a turn from my merchants. Spices and cotton from the holy land and wine and cloth from mainland Europe.

How many merchants are you using at the moment? You must have an extensive network of these guys. I'm using only tree around Byzantium, trading silk. I think there are 4-5 resources of silk in Byzantium area and when I get a few more of them, I'll send one in Rhodes to trade wine. It makes about 20-24 gold with a low level merchant. Any other good locations?

I gave up using merchant. With, at best 20 fl/turn it takes 30 turns to repay them. If he's not killed before. In any case he will die before earning money.

There seems to be better income if you get more of the same resource.. So just kill enemy merchants and take as many pieces of same resource for yourself as you can.. Also, resources far away make more money.
And get trade rights with the owner of those resources, that helps too.
I'm off to build myself a proper trade network. =)

They are only useful in the long term...

First, you have spend many turns (with the short movement points) to find a decent resource. Then, you must let him 'work' on the spot. Playing Denmark, the best I could find was a spot near Antwerp. 11, then 14, and with experience (monopoly traits, etc.) 25 florins. (turn 30...)

Problem is, if he is in a 'crowded' area, he won't last long. AI loves building a lot of them, and they move a lot.
Mine escaped an inquisitor, 2 turns later the inquisitor came back and killed him...
And in the early and mid-game low cash, I have no money for those gadgets units !
