My ever continuing (roman) war with the filthy hairy gauls has reached its peak. Stacks after stacks of these animals are getting decimated from my veteran gaul legion and new hero captains emerge from the bloodbath. But then as all things, war is money (denarii in this case) and the war against macedon was long and bloody but resolved in glory and drained imperial coffers. In such harsh times a small detachment of inexperienced cohorts fueled the war machine against the gauls with the devastation of the rebelious city - state of caralis:
Julius secundus captain of the 3rd Legion gladly accepted his mission in subdueing this crucial trade post and easy mission against the unorganized rebel army, especially after his tedious and hard mission against massila. He was about to face 2 armies of rebels and then lay siege on caralis and also promised that his career would end there peacefully as governor of the conquered settlement.
He disebarked quickly the 1500 men imperial fleet and set to conquer the city ignoring the two nearby camped rebel armies by laying siege to the city directly... how wrong was he to think that his rookie but disciplined legion would claim victory
over the rebellion army.. and sad and bitter was his end too for it was only until (his) the end that he realized that his legion was opposed by an army more suited to guerilla tactics than his troops were use to fighting the brutal gauls.
And so the army of over eight horse archer units and six foot archers supported by hordes of barbaric spearmen soon claimed the lives both his and his men for the roman legion was unprpepared to face such a mobile force. The rain of arrows rained death upon the poor troops and though great were the losses for the rebels too soon death claimed Julius life and over 2000 troops.
The siege was broken and the remnants of the legion withdrawed and waited for reinforcements to come so they could siege and obliterate the rebellious caralis with a sword of vengeance.
At that time a new captain rose from within the ranks of the the decimated legion. Six units of principes was all that was left and forty battle-hardened now triarii spearmen.
But the gods had not played their last round of cruel game against the legion. The rebels quckly regrouped and quickly trapped the poor cohorts. They were determined to show the empire that their lands were to remain free and that they were no small brigand party to be triffled with.
The morning of the third month of 237 BC found the two armies opposed in the fields below the looming mountains of caralis isle.
Captain sextus knew their end was near and could do all but prevent the inevitable. He frowned upon the cruel roman gods and swore their end would be all but glorious, and gory too...
He quickly arranged his troops in a defensive shield wall box formation waiting for the rebels to swarm over them from all directions... he knew hew was facing numerous archers too and the short ranged pillum was no match for the far greater ranged archer war his was about to come up against.
And so the rebels with their fast mobile horse archers soon rained arrows against his troops but fortunately devine intervention quickly lighted his confused mind: He could retreat his troops far near the mountain and let the rocks guard his mens back. The box formation resulted in unacceptable losses for his rear guard and his men were shaken..
So he ordered a tightly packed shield wall line formation and retreated to the southern corner of the battlefield.
...And the arrows quickly hid the sun and the birds and the sky. So many they were - but the roman shield was sturdy and not even over two thousand arrows could drop even one bloodthirsty principe and by the time the rebel spearmen horde came close to break their ranks they answered with a swift and deadly blow.
Many hours the rebels sieged the captain but not even a minute his men flinched - they knew that arrow after arrow they survived the time their arrows would end was near.
And so it happened - not even 10 men dropped from the rebel bitter arrows for the shield wall was too hard for the enemy to break - bow and spear alike.
And soon Jupiter offered captain sextus the most valueble prize: vengeance with a glorious charge and with a decisive blow the rebel army scattered and was brought down ..and soon caralis fell too.
Captain sextus took his rightfull position beside the gods and the roman family too.

I couldn't do anything less than use my petty english language knowledge to introduce one of my most glorious battle s i'ver experienced with rtw. Everytime i play rtw there is something new to learn and in all this time i play rtw only spqr:rtw made this possible! thank you lt and team - the shield wall formation made this possible and its gonna be looong till dreams of this epic battle begin to fade from my dreams.
Of course over 50 tga's were captured from this over 2 hour battle - arrow bath more properly - and tomorrow i hope i get to post some of them. Words are too small to describe the epic triumph of 750 decimated principe troops in shield wall formation on over 3000 archers horse and foot alike and another 2000 spearmen...and i couldn't believe such minimal losses from arrow fire.

Tnx for your patience in reading all above :blushing:

What you said in the begining was true, I believe the quote is "money, like weapons make war go smoothly,". Luckily in my game I have close to two million denarii:). I will destroy those filthy Gallic Tribes:).

Peace,
Adnan

Put them into jpeg format and then upload at www.imageshack.us
Then take the direct link it gives you, hit the image button in your advanced reply screen, and paste it in.

Good story, glad to hear that the Gauls have been put back into their places by the will of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and the mighty legions of the Senate and People's Republic of Rome.

Money is ever a problem, there's usually never enough of it, and when there is corruption reigns supreme with family members. A necessary evil it seems.
