There are two statagies (one for campaign one for battle) that I have recently discoverd to be very effective in reeking havoc among your enemies.

The first, is biulding massive armies of nothing but cavalry auxilia and a few units of roman cavalry. By deploying a 'system' of these armies (there cheap to maintain) one can severly handicap an enemy army. I have recently used this tactic to great effect in asia minor while batteling the eygptians. Just attack, take out there elephants, maybe some of there other good troops, then when your out of ammo you withdrawl. I have recently gotten causaltie stats of as much as 32:682.

The second is a stratagy that seems to work, and if it does it will severly limit your enemys economy. It is a primitive form of Biological warfare. When one of your settements gets infected with a plauge, you biuld a spy so he becomes infected. Then you tell that spy to go to an enmy city, so he spreads the plauge to that city, then you can tell him to go to other cities and keep spreading it. I have done some limited testing with this but it seems to work, I once spread plague to almost all of greece.

I had four generals with the plague. I've been surprise attacks in greece to spread the plague there. I infect a settlement, then withdraw.

lol. Surely the first one will fall over when you run out of movement points and you are cornered...

Hah i have used that since the beginning of time!

No unconventionall tactics for me. I prefer the standard frontal assault headbutting tactic.

its a suicide run. i don't want generals breeding offspring. and i don't want them infecting my men

I use armies of Cav Aux & Velites as my rebel killers, they work very well for that as well.

this does work a treat (I once wiped out the Julii faction doing this, all their family members died). I usually send out 5-8 spies and have great fun (if you time it right you can ensure that his cities always have the plague, just keep rotating your spies around his cities, constantly re-infecting them :) )

but you have to be aware the AI will do it back (though not deliberately) as it generates spies in infected cities and sends them to your cities.

Therefore, if you do go down this route you have to run it in tandem with a bunch of assassins who's sole job is to saboutage the AI markets in the towns that you infect, thus stopping the AI producing spies.

And, if the AI does get an infected spy into one of your cities, build 4-5 spies in that city and pray they catch the AI spy or you'll always have plague there. This is because the way the AI seems to work is to move its spies out of your city, and then back in every turn, re-infecting you each time.

I must admit I've stopped doing it in my 'serious' SPQR campaign (too close to cheating), and in my other campaigns I now only infect AI units when they are a good distance away or need a boat to get there.

Are you Soctish?

No i'm not Soctish, by which i asume you mean Scotish  , but i do admire their frontal assault headbutt tactics.
Playing as Gauls or other barbarian factions you can just let your horde ripp.

Tactical, how do you get assassins to target markets?

- select on the assassin and then right click on the town
- you'll get a screen up which will list all the human targets in the town (icluding your own spies so try not to kill them!)
- on that screen is an option to saboutage, select that and you'll get a list of buildings you can burn down and the % chance of doing so
- select the one you want and heypresto, either your spy dies, or the building takes some damage or it is destroyed

couple of tips:
- if you have a spy in the town you will get a full list of buildings and % chance, if you don't you'll get a lot of question marks (you can still target them, you just don't know what they are)
- if AI has a lot of spies in town then your % chance to saboutage drops dramatically, kill the spies first
- if you have a poor assassin and all your %chances are low, always target the temple, for some reason it is the one you are most likely to succeed with.
- first target (unless temple) should always be his market. It reduces his income and stops him making spies.

In short, you can actually do more damage with a group of assassins burning down buildings than with plague. It really drains the AI's coffers and after a while it will stop repairing.

It is taking advantage though!

The Cav Aux are great for killing elephants though. WHen the Eqyptians started attacking my exploits in asia minor they came at me with hordes of elephants supported by heavy infantry, and it became to costly to operate legions in that area unsupported. So I moved to having these hordes of cavalry to go in and take out the enemy elephants and any other troops they could, then withdraw, and follow up with an attack by a legion. I am going to begin implementin a huge offensive of sabotage, assaination, and bio-warfar on egyptian cities, hopefully I can realy handicap the eqyptian economy and they'l be forced to disband some of those damned elephants.

Also I think that Plauge is the only way to reduce an enemies population without taking the city and massacaring it.

I thought it defaulted to killing the general in town. If not, it will say there is no valid target?

Or is that only the case if I have NO spy in the town? I don't think I've sent an assassin into a city after a spy was already in it.
