I find javelin armed units here pretty useless much like what they are in Vanilla since their animations are too slow to allow them to throw anyting before getting stuck in hand to hand combat. I think you guys should, in the next patch, include changes in javelin animations that allow some kinds of "javelins shower" animations where all javelins are thrown uniformly and quickly. As skirmishers, they should be able to throw at least a shower or two before coming in contact with charging enemies, shouldn't they?

Put them behind you inf units, lock their ability to withdraw and get a cool beer.

Concept for skirmishers is to run fast to encounter first enemy units and weak them before the great battle begin.

They aren't useless.

Most jav-equipped heavy infantry just have two shots. So they will get one volley off just before ensuing melee. That volley will actually kill more than most other non-elite archers can in 4-5 volleys.

Then you have another javelin shot at the enemy's back if they decide to run away!! ^_^

But like Strelac pointed out, if you just have your average missile javelin troops who aren't good at melee, stick them behind some tougher units and they'll do their part. Javelin showers from Roman legionnaires that kill half the enemy unit is just a tad too unrealistic.

i did't mean massive kills javelin volleys, what i wanted was a more uniformed javelin volley that wouldn't take too long. If you have played through the game, you'll find that not even half your troops manage to throw their javelins before being caught in melee. Mods such as stainless steel, Deus Lo Vult or Third Age Total War all have this adjustment and it really improves "feel" as "effectiveness" of javelin-armed units in those games.

Protect them, then, so they won't get caught in melee... Skirmishers aren't first line troops.

Light javelinears...
They seamed useless to me also when i had a big surprice in many mods.
While they defend walls are the most usefull units to kill heavily armored troops other units of higher ranks simply can not...
I killed in BC Khwresmian cataphracts and in SS Hungarian chivalric knights.
Please do not underestimate the value of "levies"...

Depend bi the tactics. If skirmisher atract some units far from main army and are 2 against one...will decimate even the highest unit of infantery.Kipchak have skirmishers equiped with mace and are very efective units in range and in close combat after weaking units.

There is a reason for them to take so long. They are looking at the charging heavy inf or cavalry, and thinking "should I stay and throw, or should I f0kin run". Being that they are not of the highest steed, it takes them some time to process that decision :P

Seriously, you asking the moder to make the unit more forgiving to human error, that's all.

The problem is not with the human (it's easy to utilize javelinmen well) but with the AI. Over RC for TATW with faster throwing animation javelinmen cope much better ... and it's balanced by slightly reduced range or number of javelins.

If M2TW was a multiplayer-only game most of these issues ... wouldn't be issues, but game features.

Yup! Slow javelin animations are annoying to players, but, moreover, they render javelin units useless for AI armies. I don't see any harm in my suggestion. Besides, i'd change it myself if i knew how to.

As a player of Deus lo Vult, javelins are a great wall defenders, and can easily defend the walls. Example: 1 Fuedal knight unit engange the wooden walls and it's gates with a ram. On the wall are 2 light Lithuanian javelin units. After the gate is breech, 80 % of the unit is decimated. For the first time in my experience, these units matter on the field of battle, jet not owerpowerd.
