There is no way that this is realistic. As Rome, in basically what is turn three, I have boats from Carthage and Illeria, both factions who are neutral with me, attack me at the same time at multiple cities. At first I just think "okay, no matter I'll just kill these armies and everything will be fine". I kill them and rejoice.

The Illerians send a diplomat over saying they want to ceasefire, I ask for a bunch of money, ceasefire. Next turn, they attack with minimal units again, breaking the truce they just made, and I repeat the process.

After multiple turns, I looked at my faction sheet, and I had fought 65 battles without even leaving Italy yet. 65 battles! Was Italy historically under siege by Carthage, Illeria, and Greece every year?

I hope that I am just doing something wrong, because this doesn't seem at all realistic and is just a large depletion to my money supply which means that I can't invade anywhere and am forced to defend and auto-resolve every single turn.

This mod is great... I just hope there's a way to fix the AI throwing unit after unit after my cities, breaking truces, and etc.

Some info: I am using the BI exe with RTW Gold on steam, I have played VH/VH, H/H, and M/M and they all seem exactly the same in all aspects.

The broken AI is not something that is related to RTR. It is annoying, but we can't even touch the AI... not possible at all => hardcoded.

What mod do you use? RTR Gold, RTR Platinum or any of the submods?

I would suggest you try ExRM. It is very well balanced, so such things are reduced to a minimum. However it is still a mod for RTW, so stupid AI behaviour is rather common... :)

I use the latest platinum version. I'm just wondering if this is normal because whenever I would play unmodded RTR on any difficulty it wasn't like this at all. The AI typically builds up large armies and it's challenging... but here they are transporting two units with boats and attacking my cities where they will clearly lose... if this is something that's normal... maybe I'll go back to medieval

Medieval II... with stainless steel mod to be specific. Makes M2 the best of the series IMO

Pretty nice choice.
However, don't you think it is someway incorrect to blame a mod for the RTW engine being unable to handle well enough anything but vanilla? Some "bugs" are hardcoded, and it is next to impossible to avoid 'em even if they can be located (yet I think no one knows exactly why the Scythians are so lazy in vanilla and how the Sarmatians do inherit this stupid behaviour in RTR). For example, AI never disbands units running low on resources, it never destroys buildings even if they cannot be used, and so on. As modders, we cannot change it.

That's the BI.exe doing You can try playing with RTW.exe or try to upgrade to ALX.exe if you have it installed.

BI.exe do have the tendency to send small stacks of units across by boat.

Yeah, naval invasions sound nice on paper, but not when its constant 4 unit armies with no particular aim...:thumbsdow

Well rightly said about that then. I suppose I'll use the Alexander .exe since I have it. Whatever I can do to enjoy the mod while enjoying the slow, unrushed pace I enjoy playing at.

You should try EXM RTR experience much better ai on battlefield and has better generals.

I play ExRM for quite a while now, but the reason to switch from PE wasn´t actually the behaviour of "the stupid AI". In fact, i loved those Illyrians raids on my Adria coast - i kept my generals busy, preventing them from becoming "lovers of buty" while sitting in the towns and managing them ;)
And the carthaginian threat was also a small nice challenge, where you had to handle them, while trying to defeat Pyrrhus´ armies. Of course it would be much better, if the Carthaginians would send full stacks by sea, but well...

I´ve started a new vanilla campaign with Romans ( July ) just for fun, and i must say: there are much more rebell spawnings, as soon as public order in your ( or the neighbour ) cities isn´t over 100% - kind of same thing, only in PE this are Illyrian raiders.

But most of all, there is no really a war for Sicily, wether in PE nor in ExRM, so it´s to easy to gain controll over it.
Btw: I know, many of you don´t want RTR to become a "siege realism" game, but many important cities were besieged for severall years ( wich would mean 8-20 turns due to the 4pty script ), and the defenders had an enormous advantage on their side, while playing the game, one only has to bring a decent "uber" army with a good general and wait not more then 2 turns ( half a year! ) to take the city! I find it more then unrealistic to be honest.

Oh, and about Alex engine: I would love to try it, but not all of us are modders, so why aren´t there kind of "sub mods", released with the the newest engine, made by "profs", without forcing people to try a rooky job instead? :whistling

AI in BI is more (cluelessly) aggressive. They tend to attack without a plan.
But ..... believe you woudn't really want a completely historical setting. You'd be bored to death!

AI in Alexander is more rational (you can check my mini-mod :shifty:) but it's not much more challenging IMHO. What's the point of having a grand strategy plan if you always lose the battles? :laughter:
