Since the current handbook offers so little information of any value, can anyone say whether some, or any of the old unit battlefield properties are still included in Empire?
I'm thinking of things like units taking less hits from missiles while in woods, and infantry having a distinct advantage in melee against cavalry in woods.
And whether the players "hidden" units really are hidden, as some posts have suggested that the AI can "see" your hidden troops.
These facts always used to be stated in the "old" handbooks, for the benefit of new players.
We seem to have been left very much in the dark about many things concerning how Empire plays.

Regarding the AI - it's my experience that they can't. In one battle I had my troops in one long line with those on the flanks hidden because they were in the forests. Flanking cavalry came, clearly hoping to score a hit on my artillery behind my army - were massacred. They ran, literally ran, straight into my hidden line infantry, and routed pretty quickly.

Regarding terrain: Artillery bounces on grassland, making it much, much more lethal, particularly against cavalry. A single bouncing shell can take out 10-12 horsemen at once, because a hit anywhere, whether on the man or the horse, counts as a kill. It does not bounce on mud or snow.

If you play RTI, the first battle you play the guide tells you to set up your line behind a fallen tree for addtional cover. So in theory yes, terrain such as woods and standing behind fallen trees and fences should give you more protection. But with all the broken aspects of this game who knows if it actually works. I've never done any tests.
