I've got a steam account and I've installed E:TW on 2 of my computers. I'm just wondering if it's possible to have them play a LAN game with one another?

I can put both accounts offline and have them recognize each other, and find the LAN game, but when I try to join I get an "unspecified error"

Is this intentionally designed this way, or just a bug?

It will be designed this way - its more than likely a conflict of identical serial numbers.

They wouldnt have intended to game to be playable on two computers at the same time with only one paid for copy of the game - though as you say its possible to circumvent this with offline mode. Its doubtful multiplayer will be possible in offline mode, LAN or otherwise.

Finally got it to work, first off there were a lot of details you had left out I’ll explain exactly what I did.

This is for LAN, using one copy for ETW
Programs you will need:
Steam-up you get here: rev-steamup!_v1_4_1.rar Once downloaded simply place the files in your steam directory. If this link doesn’t work go here: http://cs.rin.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=51268, make an account with that forum to download it, re-click on the link once u have an account, go to the bottom of the first post for download.
Peer-Guardian you get here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/peerguardian/Make sure once it loads up for the first time to check every Box is has! In addition u will need more of a black list of IP’s to block which this doesn’t come with on its own. Download here: http://tbg.iblocklist.com/Lists/PrimaryThreats.zip Extract into the lists directory inside your Peer-Guardian folder then run Peer-Guardian click list manager, then add, then select the Primarythreat.txt file. Click the updates, once that completes shut down Peer-Guardian for the next step.
The Hosting computer will only need these programs. You have to make another account on Steam once that is done shut down steam, and run Peer-guardian. Once Peer-guardian is up and running load up the new account using the Steam-up.exe Of course u won’t be able to go online so log into it off-line since Peer-guardian will stop this. Once this is set up u should be able to start up ETW using this computer and making a Host game. Now on the other computer you will not have to do anything make sure your normal account on steam is up and running online, start up ETW and go to multiplayer and join the hosted game u had started with the other computer. That’s it.
My thanks to Swish,
Funky

I tried the above method, had trouble getting Steam-up running by I tried a "shortcut" method listen on the underground forums.

I got empire running on an alternate account but whenever I tried to host or join a LAN game it would say "Kicked due to VAC authentication failure"

This was with the alternate account in Offline Mode with PeerGuardian2 running. I was still kicked due to VAC authentication failure = /

Thanks a lot AnsbachWolf, your posted method works a treat. Modding now a _lot_ easier because I can test the mods locally :)

Cheers, Moopere

OK, modding now a lot harder because the abovementioned work around no longer works. Anyone know of a way to share a single legitimate ETW licence across a LAN?

Moopere

Trying to get Empire TW running one 2 PCs at the same time with one copy surely violates the copy protection from Steam, which is not allowed to do, and is also against ToS.

Obtaining or providing ways to circumvent copy protection

PM me if you have any questions.
