First off--i'm not a modder, lacking both techinical competance and time. However, I am a fan of various TW mods that have popped up over the years--and I was wondering if one particular thing could be modded into the game. Fog of war on the tactical battlefield.
Not sure how many younger people on this site have actually played this game, but there's an old-school game out there called Sid Meier's Gettysburg. In that game, they had real-time tactical battles, and it really was a very good game--but I really liked one thing about it in particular: a very restrictive tactical fog of war.
Back in the 1700s and 1800s, people didn't have radios, they didn't have instant communication, or radar, or satellite imaging. So if you didn't have LOS on the enemy, you couldn't see him. Gettysburg dealt with this by making fog of war very restrictive--hills, trees, or anything which would obscure your view in real life, made those things invisible to you if you had no units in the area.
Thus, you could make like actual civil war generals of the time, and divide your forces, marching a column out behind some trees or a hill, and a diversionary attack to the enemy front, and at just hte right moment, a brigade of your soldiers would sudden appear on your enemy's flank or rear and attack. It was great stuff, because you would need skirmishers and cavalry to help scout for your forces, and you would need to also predict how your opponent would move and attack, because until the fighting starts, you can't see him.
Given the dragoon and light infantry skirmisher units, I think ETW would be really great if it included this type of fog of war--but is this actually modable? Would anyone make it *hint hint* if you could?
