Dear all,
Sorry if this has already been asked, but I wonder which settings should be used for this mod. I am not at all fan of VH/VH, as it gives me the impression that the computer gets surprising bonuses (If I undertand correctly, a huge sum of money for the campaign "VH" and +7 to units for battle "VH). So what is the recommended setting? And regarding units size, same question? As it obviously impacts both unit maneuvering and more importantly maybe campaign balance, as cities are much more depleted when using huge unit settings rather than small.
I would really appreciate an answer, as I plan to play VI2 (that I have already downloaded) and would prefer to play it in the settings recommended.
On another topic, is there anywhere advices given for the campaign for each faction, and unit description?
Thanks in advance, and please excuse my French English for any poorly constructed sentence.
FFJean

The game is balanced for a M/H campaign and a medium unit-size. The campaign difficulty depends mostly in how hard you want things to get, but the unit-size is more important to keep at medium, for balance.

No gameplay guides yet, sorry. But if you find yourself in trouble, ask here and we or other players will come to the rescue.

Dear Aradan,
For my first try, I think I will (humbly, and not too bravely I must admit ;-)) start at M/M. I just have a question, I have read somewhere that at M campaign, the computer does not hire mercenaries. Is this true?
Thank you again, it's a pleasure to see that you take the time to answer.
FFJean

The AI hiring mercs depends on more than just campaign difficulty. Yes, the AI usually doesn't hire mercenaries, if it doesn't find them cost-effective enough, but I've always seen VI2 AI hire them. Regular (ie non-recruitable) mercenaries are not very common in this mod anyway, so you won't be seeing much of a difference in that regard, whatever difficulty rating you choose. The AI will give you a good fight though. ;)

Dear Aradan,
I have tried to start a campaign, but I must admit that I do not really (this is an understatement, I do not at all ;-)) understand the difficulty settings for campaign/battles. They do not appear as usual as E/M/H/VH, but as Raider/Marauder/Dragon-Prowed/Sea-King. Which is which? I see in the explanations for each faction a "Faction Difficulty Rating" which I "should" apply when starting a game? To campaign or / and to battle?
Thank you again,
FFJean

Dear MasterOfNone,
Well, I bet this shows the very low confidence I place in my ability to understand this kind of things!

Dear Aradan,
I have noticed that different settings are indicated for the different factions in their description. So does it mean that those indicated "Marauder" are supposed to be less difficult to play than those indicated "Dragon-Prowed"? I am asking because I started a campaign as Welsh and have been soundly beaten, whilst it was indicated "Dragon-Prowed".
One last question , is the setting indicated to be put in "Campaign" or in "Battle" or in both?

Thanks again for your support, and sorry if all these questions seem rather silly to the mod team.
Best regards,
FFJean

If a faction is label VH it means that if you choose to play, for example, an Easy Campaign with them, it will be the equivalent of a Hard difficulty campaign.

In other words, the rating in faction descriptions shows the relevance of the faction's campaign difficulty to the average campaign of a chosen difficulty. I hope this makes sense.

The ones with the easiest campaign difficulty ratings of course. ;)
Start with Norway, BUT don't play as usual, you must play as a Viking. Board ships, raid defenseless settlement, pillage and loot, get out.

Alternatively, there is a second script in the data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign folder, called "basic". Swap this one around with the 'original' campaign script (reverse their names) and the game will become easier immediately.

to FF Jean,
go to - "The Creative Assembly/Rome - Total War/BI/VI2/data/world/maps/campaign/barbarian_invasion" here you can find "VI2_campaign_script_basic.txt" and "VI2_campaign_script.txt". you need to change name of this: "VI2_campaign_script_basic.txt" to this: "VI2_campaign_script.txt".
good luck.

FFJean, go to /Rome - Total War/BI/VI2/data/world/maps/campaign/barbarian_invasion/descr_strat.txt. AT the bottom of the file you can see the last two lines reading:
Code:
script
VI2_campaign_script.txt
Change them to read:
Code:
script
VI2_campaign_script[COLOR=Red][B]_basic[/B][/COLOR].txt
instead. Save the file and exit, and that's it.

Dear Aradan, dear MasterOfNone,
Sorry to come back to haunt you with new questions, but my favourite kind of play is to develop nicely a civilisation (OK, I already see that you are laughing at me because this may not be exactly the main target of VI2, however, please allow me to ask ;-)) and obviously Norway is not exactly in the "Civ-development" league ;-). That's why I originally chose the Welsh. Is there any faction(s) that can be considered like that and that is not as hard to play as the Welsh? Some Saxons maybe? Or Northumbria?
Thank you very much, and please excuse my poor tries to English humour,
FFJean

Why is it important to keep unit size at medium? What gets unbalanced otherwise?

The settlement populations and the 'settlement level advance' thresholds are unaffected by the unit-size setting. Which means, if you play at Huge unit size, you and the AI will be draining your settlements' population dry quite faster than you should, which will result in not being able to expand a settlement, which means being able to access advanced infrastructure, better troops, various bonuses etc etc, which damages campaign balance, because some factions need to reach high levels of advancement in order to stand a chance.

I figured it was something like that, cheers for clarifying!

Yep, M/M is Medium campaign, Hard battles. Hard battles means roughly +4 attack for the AI.

Phew, and I wondered why it seems to be so *** hard (almost impossible) to defeat the saxons with the danes, even with an advantage of nearly 2:1 in numbers and a good tactical advantage on the battlefield (regular front attack AND simultaneous attack from the back, where you normally crush EVERY enemy if you play out your cards right). I'm used to play RTW/Mods H/H and large unit size (next time I read the recommendations first , got really desperate about it, and started to ask myself if you love the Brit factions a bit too much lol).

Great mod guys, totally new (R) TW feeling :thumbsup2
