TOURNAMENT OF ARES

Gather around sons of Alexander, and let us recount some of our famous ancestor's greatest battles ... by fighting them once again!
Hey there everyone. I have for a while seen the Battle Tournament option in the multiplayer section of the Alexander expansion for Rome: Total War, and have never seen it being put to use. Therefore, I hereby announce that I am going to host this tourney, using the Battle Tournament named "Tournament of Ares", comprising of the battles of Issus, Gaugamela and Hydaspes, all well known victories of Alexander.
So, feel free to join, but as always, remember to read the how the tourney works first!

HOW THE TOURNEY WILL WORK
- We will use the unmodded version of Alexander: Total War made by The Creative Assembly.
- The tourney will work with round-robin system.
- Each player will have to play another player in all three battles, firstly as Macedonia, then as the opposing faction (Persia/India).
- Since this will take some time, the tourney will be continuous, and no time limits are made on the contestants to play there games.
- There will also be a point system in place.
- For any sort of win, two points are awarded. However, for a heroic victory with Macedonia, a bonus point is given.
- If a victory is won due to the battle time limit running out, then it is considered draw, and both players are awarded one point.
- No points will be deducted for losses.
- The winner wil be given glory and fame, and earn the right to be called "Ares: God of War".

That's 6 battles against every contestant. That's a lot of battles. But since it's a 1v1 format, I suppose it's feasible. The 2v2 ongoing-format tournaments we have can be a nightmare to get battles scheduled.

Why a bonus point for Heroics only for Macedon? Either it should apply for India and Persia in these Ares battles as well, or not for any of them, surely?

I thought the bonus point for Macedonia only due to the fact that in two of the battles, they are outnumbered, and in the third, they also have to put up with overpowered elephants, so a Heroic would be hard earned indeed. However, if people think this is on the unfair side for Persia and India, it can always be changed...

Well, this is an ongoing one, rather than one set at a particular time and date - Xavier's idea is that we'll play the games whenever we can arrange them. Unless you're going to be off-gaming for quite some considerable time, then, the tournament will still be going on when you get back - so there's nothing barring you from signing up.

Sweet idea, count me in.

Sorry I don't know what that is in GMT. If someone could help me out that would be great in that area.

So that's 5 contestants we have so far - Xav, myself, Selifator, Chaos and Jacques? Enough for us to get started, Xav, while leaving it open to new entrants as we are ongoing?

Do you want screenshots/replays, or anything like that?

Oh how very disapointing how I missed out on this! :(

Of course you can still join Kardakes/Sparabara! We'd be happy to have another among us. :)

Seli and I are going to replay our game, because due to a slight difference in game files, the game was not synchronised, and on my screen, it looked like I won, whereas on Seli's he had won.

First, a result:

Cluny v. Xavier

Issus: Cluny (Macedon) v. Xavier (Persia): Result: Cluny wins (Heroic Victory)

Second, something important for everyone.

Xavier and I have noticed, first by accident and then by careful experimentation, that there is a glitch in the Issus map which everyone needs to be aware of and so avoid so as not to ruin their battles. On the Persian bank of the river, on the far side side closest to the sea, immediately in front of where the Scythian Mounted Archers are initially deployed, is a patch of ground which - if you move troops onto it - can snag them and confuse their unit-AI routines. This doesn't seem to happen every time, and some units - especially cavalry - appear to be able to escape from it through persistent effort - but there is a real chance that your troops will start to run around in confused circles like maddened chickens and be unable to get out of that ground, as though it were quicksand or laid with quick-drying cement. Avoid it, and your game will proceed smoothly.

Xavier and I learned this when, on our first attempt to play the Issus battle whose result is at the top of this post, first all my Hypaspists, and then all of my cavalry as well, got stuck there as I have described, uselessly doing nothing while all my phalangists were cut to pieces. We agreed on a replay for a fair fight. Don't you have to do this in the first place - avoid that patch of ground.
