EGYPT VS ROME

In a battle between Egypt and Rome, who wins? Just to refresh your mind, here's what each super-faction has:

This is one of the few ocassions where I think Rome is outclassed online.

Since I play at 10,000 denarii exclusively, my opinion is centered around Multiplayer played with 10,000 denarii...

If the Egyptian player concentrates on getting various missile units (chariot-archers, bowmen, etc) with minimal melee-support, I honestly don't see how Rome can win. Egyptian arrows will blot out the Sun!

What are your thoughts on this matchup? Feel free to analyze this matchup from a Campaign or a Multiplayer perspective. If you're discussing Multiplayer, it'll help to mention a denarii range when saying who's superior.

Since I never play online and in Campaign whenever I play Rome just rips through everyone I have to put my money on Rome. Take out the Melee support form the Testudo till the archers are killed off by calvary and have archers target the chariots till the Legionnaires can hit them with javelins.

Denarii level? With lots of money the Roman player could afford lots of units with the testudo formation. But honestly, I to have a hard time seeing how Rome could win...

This kind of matchup is why i no longer play rome online tbh. Who would win?
Well both factions have rosters stuffed full of horribly overpowered and historically inaccurate units so a lot depends on the players and rules(if any). All things being equal with no rules i would say it is easier for egypt to win with cheap tactics with there not being much the roman player could do about it. With balanced armies(a bit of a joke saying that when looking at those rosters i know) i would say it would be pretty even.

Egypt may have great archers but since I just spent an entire day pushing back waves of Egyptian attacks I found out that all it takes is a charge from cavalry to make them rout.

YOU HEAR THAT YOU DIRTY PHAROH ********RS? I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!

Rome for sure. I wanna see a unit stand up to the famous Roman Legions. Though Egypt can demolish them with arrows and chariots. Once it becomes hand to hand. It's over! FOR ROME!

The Reason Egypt may Pwn Rome is because if Rome Is invading Egypt, their infantry are too heavy for desert heat. I'm glad Caesar conquered egypt.

Nah, legionaries can destroy anything egyptian. Just buy only legionaries or urban cohorts, then put them in testudo then wait for the egyptian cavalry to come and rout in melee, as they surely will. The archers at this point may try to shoot the romans but they'll hit their own soldiers.

Once the egyptian cavalry is in flight, romans can go back to the testudo, wait for the enemy arrows to run out, and rout the egyptian bowmen.

Edit - In fact, they say Egypt is an "overpowered" faction. IMHO, their soldiers can't even hold a line decently against anything, their heavy cavalry is outclassed by Seleucid, Macedonian, Roman and even barbarian cavalry and their Pharao's Guards can't stand Spartan hoplites or Urban Cohorts. Their missiles are decent, but the enemies can easily counter this with cavalry and joining close combat quickly.

In fact Egypt has one of the most pathetic armies in the game. Only Gaul and Numidia are weaker than they. They can win, but that's because they're rich and can field lots of cheap and low quality troops in few time.

A human opponent won't shoot at the front of a testudo. But clearly, if Egypt runs out of arrows, they don't have much of a fighting force left. But how does Rome survive the initial barrage of arrows?

I don't use Egypt or Rome often - so enlighten me as to how you accomplish this.

Well you can mass a lot of General's bodyguard chariots with that 10,000 denarii. So if you can outmaneuver, maybe charge them a bit and just frustrate the hell out of them ,you can win.

A good Egypt player can beat the romans, chariots and elite archers are killers when used right, if the romans attack then they will have massive casualties from arrowfire, if they stay in testudo than the formation will exhaust them over time so they will easely break when the carriots finaly charge them.

Roman units are overpowered but not unbeatable, swordsmen like legionaires sucks against chariots.

Egypt doesn't seem to do all that well when actual money is involved. That is, a reasonable denari limit.

I'll go Rome.

Egypt is definetely better. Especially at 10k because their troops are relatively cheaper than Rome's. Hold the roman infantry with your phalanx, shoot em up with your superior archers and then eat up their cavalry with your chariots...I think you know what comes next. Although as the money for the battles go up Egypt seems to start to lose some of their power. :thumbsup2

id put my money on rome there over powered in the game, although with 10k with egypt you can afford a really upgraded army.

For all of you people saying that Rome would win, could you provide a tactical analysis as to how you would accomplish this?

Please mention the denarii value - I think at a high denarii game, Rome destroys all. But at 10,000 denarii, I think it's more in favor of Egypt. How do you guys prevent Egypt from shooting you full of arrows?

Testudo.

It's called ROME Total War for a reason.

Testudo doesn't work online. It's a short-term deterrent, but your opponent will simply re-position his troops for a flank/rear shot. Thus, testudo isn't really a solution.

And that second quote isn't even my quote. Please don't misquote me and put my name on it.

I still wish to know how you Roman players go about beating an Egyptian army at 10,000 denarii online against an opponent that thinks. I have a few ideas, but they're really just theories. As I said, I don't use Rome or Egypt.

Not bragging or anything, but I'd be very surprised if anyone here could beat me with Rome if I had Egypt and it was for 10k. If you know how to use em its practically impossible to beat the Egyptians with Rome at 10k. You could say im a MP vet for RTW and I've seen it before believe me. Many of the people I know even called Egypt the "Roman-Killers" or some such.

Could we get one of the Roman players here to play this guy? I really want to know/see how Romans can win this matchup.

I'm kind of suprised on how so many went with Rome. I actually had a hard time judging the winner. :P

I'm using 1.5 (the most recent patch). Just curious: why do you say Rome is better than Egypt in 1.5?

Well for several reasons:

- In the later patches they REALLY turned down Egypt considerably. For most of us that was a good thing, but unfortunately they continued to do so making them pretty cheap but not really good.

- The Romans have Urban Cohorts and archers that can take down the chariots and a large number of Egypt's forces. Since Egypt's archers are expensive ( and don't count as infantry anymore like they used to) they're rarely worth the cost. Plus the Desert Cavalry has lost some of its effectiveness making it difficult to fight against the most powerful cavalry in the game: Praetorians.

- Even in 10,000 Rome still gets access to some of the best units. 860 for an Urban and 360 for archers with upgrades for 12 attack is a very deadly combination.

- I tried many times to get Rome with Egypt but if the player plays smartly it fails. Unless you fight in the Desert bet on the Romans.
