Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Also there's some weird texture warping on her stomach.... not sure what exactly I did wrong but I feel it has to do with joints.
I would say it is either a problem with the normal map, or your uv mapping is off.

Hmmm maybe... the texture looks find in MS3D though... might just be something that happens during the transition between ms3d and Mesh. Worst Case Scenario I'll just delete those groups and re-import them.

Sounds good.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Hay

I'm wondering if I can ask a bunch-o-questions about this mod?

The Kokiri faction, I guess by your description that they are more than just the Kokiri in OoT (they are children spirits after all) but others as well?

Since this mod is fan fiction, im wondering how 'deep' into fan-fiction this is? I would personally prefer it if it were subtle, but its your call.

You mentioned a Lanayru faction, but according to Zelda wiki, Lanayru is pretty much the heartland of the kingdom of Hyrule, with it having castle Town and stuff.

As for Ganon, maybe you can have him lead a faction separate from the Gerudo (but allied), have his forces have Moblins and stuff, maybe merge the Stalfos into his faction.

Likewise, maybe merge the Deku skrubs with Gohma perhaps? (can deku scrubs even work in total war, how can creatures with no arms climb ladders?)

The Zoras, do you think they will look more like OoT, or TP Zoras?

Will Ruto be in it?

The Kingdom of Hyrule looks neat, but can they also have access to troops that arnt so "knightly", you know, lesser/cheaper troops that arnt so expensive looking, it would help the mods balance.

A Hyrule rebel faction could be neat as well if Hyrule is OP and you have an extra faction slot after everything.

Will you have 'the guards' as units? (OoT and/or TP ones)?

Are the Gerudo the only people in the desert.

Looking forward to seeing more of your models. I really like the Zelda one.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Feel free to ask as many questions as you want. :thumbsup2

I'll do my best to answer these, though I'll say as of now my answers probably are prone to change and are only my thoughts at the moment.

- The Kokiri will be an alliance of various forest creatures. At the moment I plan for Wolfos to be allied with them, as well as their evolved Korok forms that appeared in Windwaker. Some other creatures might show up as well like giant Deku Trees that serve as battering rams.

- I can't really say how deep I'll go for sure. I'll definitely try to keep it as subtle as possible, but the fact that it's a full blown bloody and gory Zelda RTS might already be pushing the bounds of subtle. :whistling

- Lanayru Province was a sub Kingdom of Hyrule that for some reason included their capital city, however most of it was ruled by a sect of Zoras to the north. These Zoras basically have become tired of Hylian rule and have seized various cities in Lanayru. As far as unit composition they'll consist of the TP styled Zoras as well as sympathetic Hylians that have decided to support the Zora.

- I do plan on portraying Ganondorf and Ganon separate beings. Ganondorf, being the only surviving male Gerudo, will be the leader of their faction. Ganon, the giant Moblin will wield a trident and sword and lead one of the unannounced factions. (I think you're on track as to what that faction is though :sweating:)

- Deku Scrubs will have a unit that acts like a stairway if I can find a way to get it into the engine. Some Deku Scrubs do have arms though (a notable example being the King of them).

- The Zora Dominion will be modeled after the OoT style Zora. Lanayru Province will be the TP styled Zora.

- Ruto will indeed be a leader unit in the Zora Dominion.

- The Kingdom of Hyrule will have Militia Soldiers, Archers, and several others that serve as early game units. They are basically the new recruits in the Hylian army that are training to become mainline soldiers. Most of their units after that point will be armored and knightly though.

- I've been juggling ideas as to a rebel faction. At one point as I was considering making the Stalfos the rebel faction (basically instead of rebelling your towns are hit by a plague that kills and reanimates everyone). I'm not sure about that one though so I can't really say what I'll do for rebels.

- Indeed, the Castle Guards will be a unit, most likely the "general's bodyguard" unit. I might stick with the OoT design, since I based the Hylian Light Infantry on the castle guard design from TP

- Gerudo are not the only faction from the desert. One of the unannounced factions will come from there too.

- I put some more models on the first post if you're interested.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

well let me offer my thanks to Alone Elf for helping this mod and its leader overcome the problem of mesh and joints.

(also if u get the chance could u answer the Termina idea i posted)

also if i am correct Ordona Province was a vassal to Hyrule so i was thinking maybe Hyrule & Ordona could be permanently allied and there could be a script so that Ordona pays tribute to hyrule of 100 gold per city, that way if Ordona expands the tribute changes accordantly

exe ordona starts with 3 cites that equals 300 gold per turn of tribute to hyrule, but then ordona conquers 2 more cite making the total amout of cites 5, so the tribute changes to 500 per turn to show that ordona are paying taxes to hyrule.

also Ordona could be allowed to recruit the basic Hylian units to represent hyrule sending troops to help its vassal, but u could make it so that if Ordona breaks the alliance they cant recruit Hylian troops and the ones they already have could rebel out of anger at Ordona for its betrayal of the Hylian Crown.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Hmm, maybe the mod can be somewhat inspired by the Hilian civil war mentioned in Oot.
http://www.zeldawiki.org/Hyrulean_Civil_War

..that would allow multiple Hilian factions (or one playable faction and many rebel factions) in Hyrule to try and create a united realm, and one faction (if the winner) becomes the Kingdom of Hyrule faction for the duration of the campaign. Plus it would allow the Shiekah to be a faction (since they are pretty much gone by the Time of OoT. Though it would still be be fanlorish "in its own universe" due to the inclusion of OoT era characters and TP styled troops unless you find away to introduce unique characters after the campaign starts (the events of OoT was apparently 1 generation after the Civil warm though I don't think that's possible with the engine)

Interesting, but it will be weird to see a kokiri empire wouldn't it? Maybe instead there can be a faction of Forrest dwelling non-Hilian humans with villages and towns in and around the forest (similar to Ordon), with Kokiri village itself a unique province (with unique AOR units) apart of the faction but separated from the other settlements by distance and non-passable trees with a few entrances.

I'd not mind making a Termina campaign, I'll put it on my to do list but as I say.... one step at a time. :sweating:

Ordon Province is indeed a vassal state to Hyrule, much like Lanayru is. Ordon will be Hyrule's main source of food since it's a large farming nation and thus they naturally start out allied. if there's a script for forcing an Ordon player to pay Hyrule then that would be awesome... and if you choose not to pay tribute then the good old Kingdom will get angry at you. Ordon will have some Hylian residents, but they will be mostly composed of Ordonians (essentially Hylians with the round ears instead of pointy).

Hmm, maybe the mod can be somewhat inspired by the Hilian civil war mentioned in Oot.

A Hylian civil war sounds awesome, perhaps after I finish all the factions here I'll see about making a Hylian civil war campaign. One step at a time though. :sweating:

The Kokiri won't operate under an "empire" or regime of that nature. Rather each city is ruled by it's own laws and customs and they are all just allied under a common banner and contribute to their military force. The Kokiri pretty much are just accidentally pulled into the war because of the Gohma and they are only fighting because they need to defend themselves.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

sorry i didn't want to make it sound like i was pressuring u, i was just throwing the idea up there and i agree 1 step at a time (after all to build a building u need a strong base).

also i think the correct name of Ordon Province is Ordona, Ordon is the capital of Ordona
(and if u need any help with research i would be happy to)

Very cool models! In case you need help with scripting let me know, I'd be glad to contribute. One thing is sure: the graphics in this mod will be amazing :)

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Looks like all is going well. Excited to see more models! I'll hopefully get Zelda working in a couple of minutes :whistling.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Or, you know, just make Ordon a province of Hyrule, for the first release at least.

The simpler the faction list at the beginning the easier it will be to actually make a first release. A ton of mod attempts dont make it, a lot of them are because the project is too ambitious. Ive been told its a lot of work.

Have you read this thread? Its very important that you do

Think small is my advice, and expand upon it if you succeed. Wlesmans LOTR TW mod for RTW began as him making a Gondor faction and inserting it into the vanilla RTW. You can try the same thing. By making the Hyrule faction and placing it in vanilla M2TW as the first baby step of your mod. Plus Zelda killing England sounds fun. (of coarse, destroying the English is always fun:tongue:)

Speaking of Wlesmana, when some posters on his forum starting making a 'Tales of Arda' mod, he wrote this... (go down to Wlesmanas post)
http://www.lotr-tw.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2685

Tales of Arda failed BTW.

I don't want to despair you, you obviously have talent and im not saying you cant do it, this is just the 'elephant in the room' whenever a mod project starts. I just want you to know what your getting into. Sorry if you already knew this.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

I managed to finish a model of a Gerudo unit today:
hyrule__tw___gerudo_scout_by_undyingnephalim-d38zypz.jpg
This will be their dismounted scout unit (they will have a cavalry version as well). They'll be in smaller groups of about 10 rather then 150 I think, but they'll be fairly fast and good at combat. Not only are they good scouts, but they double as a basic archer and triple as a melee unit too. I figure the smaller groups might help balance out their skill.

Hehe no worries, everyone can pitch in ideas if they want. By my memory I thought Ordona was the name of the Goat that they use as their emblem. I guess it could be a tomato-tuhmahto sort of thing. :hmm:

Thank you for the offer, I'll come to you when I get around to scripting and I run into roadblocks. Hopefully I'll get around to making lod's... these models have been causing the game to really lag in large numbers. :sweating:

I do agree with the starting small and then going big, and I do think that's the methodology I'll go by. I've made a total conversion before for another game by starting small and that is the best method. I'll be working on just the first six races first and making sure they work before doing too much work in the others. Also based on the advice of Alone Elf I've decided I'll finish all the models first and insert them into the game before I get into things like mapping and scripting.

As long as there are people here who are interested I don't think I'll stop working on this even if it's bit by bit. Even if no one was interested I'd probably still work on it... a Zelda RTS has been on my to-do list for almost a decade now.

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

I love the models on this mod! Great job. I'm not familiar with Zelda universe, but these models really give me a great impression!

Keep up!

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

I agree with Briariuss, very good models :)

one thing, does anyone happen to know 'the legend of neil'?

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

I have the same problem with my units. See them nicely in Milkshape and then they get messed up in the game. SWhen i import them back in 3d max they look nice again. Really strange. I have made a post in units page in M2TW workshop thread, hope someone can find a solution for this. Its really annoying to do hours of work on a model and then to have to deal with this. And i dont think its groups problem because mine didnt have any rather than one for the whole model, i dont use variations

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

fun fact about the four provinces,

Province - Spirit - Goddess

Faron Province - Faron - Farore
Eldin Province - Eldin - Din
Lanayru Province - Lanayru - Nayru
Ordona Province - Ordona - Or = Farore - Don = Din - na = Nayru

I've seen an episode or two of that parody. :laughter:

i would guess you have welded vertexes between various texture parts. when converted to mesh such vertexes will snap together and distort the uv-map.
Is there any way to counteract this after it's been done? I do know that I have welded vertices before I brought the model into MS3D... :hmm:

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

Nice Models. I wait to conquer Hyrule with Kokiri ;)

Re: Hyrule - Total War anyone?

I checked through my model, there were quite a few vertex points that lit up with more then one. I'm fairly certain I've unwelded and combined all the UV's now... yet in game I still get the texture warp in the exact same spots. I guess there might be one vertex hiding in a corner somewhere...

EDIT: I just noticed that even after I separated the UV's that the vertice points are still lighting up across the map. Apparently I can't find Maya's equivalent of "unweld". Does anyone know how to unweld vertices in Maya?

EDIT AGAIN: Like a fool I just realized MS3D has an unweld option... so I did it there and it works just fine now. Thank you for pointing out the fix to that issue absinthia. I'm still quite baffled as to why Maya and 3DS do not seem to have an unweld vertex option. I guess lesser programs like MS3D still outshine bigger ones at times.
