[WIP] ETW: The Bitter End (Zulu/boer wars, scramble for Africa)

[WIP] ETW: The Bitter End (Zulu/boer wars, scramble for Africa)

This mod is looking great, keep up the good work! A favorite time period of mine.

I like this mod and I see a bright future for it. Very original era, haven't seen much games about the Zulu and Boer Wars.
I also like the campaign map alot.

I'll be checking this thread often :)

Here's a list with general native warriors trainable at all regions throughout the map comparable with the Native American warriors you can build in the ETW campaign. Only they won't were any colonial jackets, uniforms are reserved for the Askari's of the colonial powers. After the general troops you will find region specific troops which you can only build in specific regions (like the Ghoorkas when you have the Kashmir region in ETW:SF). This will make capturing some regions a good opportunity for you when your faction lacks a certain type of units.

General native troops

Native warriors

Spearwarrior.jpg

Description: The African continent was home to countless Native tribes ranging from a few dozen families to fast African empires. All these tribes needed their young men to be trained as warriors for hunting purposes or disputes with other tribes. The traditional weapons for these warriors were the spear and shield. These warriors form the core of most Native armies and are sometimes hired by European powers when in need of a cheap and quick boost in numbers.
Regions trainable: All regions
Unit type: Native close combat infantry
Special abilities:
---
Armament: Spears and shields.

Native archers

Archer.jpg

Description: Although mainly used as a hunting tool, the bow and arrow can be effective in warfare as well. Because of their long hunting tradition the weapon skill of these archers was far better than the weapon skills of the mostly inexperienced native musketeers. During the colonization of Africa the bow and arrow were slowly replaced by Muskets and rifles.
Regions trainable: All regions
Unit type: Native ranged infantry
Special abilities:
---
Armament: Bows and arrows.

Native musketeers

Musketeer.jpg

Description: The introduction of “modern” rifles in Europe left arms dealers with hugh piles of old-fashioned muzzle-loaders for which they had to search a new market: the continent Africa. The introduction of these fire-arms as a trade good for slaves and ivory made a devastating impact on tribal relations and led to the downfall and rise of many Native empires. Although traditional bow and arrows were more effective in actual killing oponants, the sound of gunfire had a devastating impact on the morale of native enemies.
Regions trainable: All regions. (After certain buildings are present)
Unit type: Native skirmishers
Special abilities:
---
Armament: Muskets.

Region specific troops

Ruga-ruga

RugaRuga.jpg

Description:
The reckless ruga-ruga were well represented in Eastern Africa throughout the 18th century. Most of these opportunistic and fierce slave traders operated as mercenaries or under command of local warlords. The most notorious of these warlords was the legendary Mirambo who was described by Henri Morton Stanley as “the Napoleon of central Africa”. The Ruga-ruga were exceptional fast runners since their way life was raiding village after village in which case they had to compete with each other to reach the next village first for the best loot.
Regions trainable: Unyamwezi
Unit type: Native skirmishers
Specialty abilities/skills:
“Slavers”: their reputation as ruthless slavers has a large demoralizing effect on enemy native troops.
Armament:
Muskets

Maasai ilmeluaya

Maasai.jpg

Description: With the impressive wild lion manes around their head these legendary masai warriors drive fear into the hearts of any who cross their path. These “fearless” warriors are experienced lion hunters and used to the hard life in the bush. They are well respected among both friend and foe. These specialized masai groups only contain the strongest and bravest warriors that were carefully selected by the elder warriors.
Regions trainable: Masai lands
Unit type: Native close combat infantry.
Special abilities/skills: “
fearless”: apart from a high morale the group is immune to enemy demoralizing effects.
Armament:
Spear and shield

Oorlam commando

Griqua.jpg

Description: These cattle raiders are the result of white Boer farmers mixing with Khoi-khoi natives. Being “colored” they did not attain the social or legal status according their fathers. The “basters” became outcasts terrorizing native villages all along the Orange River in Southern Africa. After their state “Griqualand” was annexed by the British Empire many migrated north-eastwards into Namaqualand avoiding conscription by the Europeans. They were trained in the way of the Boer commando’s as expert hunters and horse riders making them a force to reckon with.
Regions trainable: Griqualand, Namaqualand.
Unit type: Mounted skirmishers
Special abilities:
Dismount to fight on foot.
Armament: Rifles

Congo cannibals

Cannibals.jpg

Description: Like most parts of Africa the fast congo basin is home to a variety of native tribes, although what differs these tribes from others is their taste of human flesh. Both Arab slavers and Belgian colonials saw the potential of these gruesome troops and used them to support their own troops with the promise of a “tasty banquette” after a won battle. They wore limbs and body parts of their victims with them as a warning for others (and a quick snack when one gets hungry)
Regions trainable: Kasai, Orientale, Equatar, Kivu.
Unit type: Native close combat infantry
Special abilities:
“Cannibals”: The thought of ending up as someone’s diner has a large demoralizing impact on both European and native enemies.
Armament: Spears

Basotho pony riders

Basutho.jpg

Description: Basotho ponies were a strong horse breed build for rough and rugged terrain. These descendants from the cape horses were evolved through natural selection, as were their masters wearing straw hats and wide cloths. The Basotho were well trained in the use of guns and horse riding and this combined with cunning skirmish tactics made them resist the colonial encroachment longer than any other tribe in the surrounding.
Regions trainable: Basotho
Unit type: Mounted light cavalry
Special abilities:
---
Armament: Rifles

Pygmy hunters

Pigmies.jpg

Description: The pygmies of central Africa had to compensate their size with cunning tactics. Being bullied, enslaved and even eaten by neighboring tribes they were forced to an obscure life hidden in the fast jungles of the Congo basin and Tutsi kingdoms. Being small is not always a bad thing, for instance if you want to be kept unseen. They were one of the first tribes in Africa that effectively discovered how to poison their arrows.
Regions trainable: Tutsi kingdoms, Gabon, Kingdom of Loango, Kivu, Equateur.
Unit type: Native skirmishers.
Special abilities:
Poisoned arrows will kill wounded troops over time.
Armament:
Bow and arrow.

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natal_Native_Contingent should be added for the British (:

Their training was the same as that given to British troops in the region. And in fact they often preformed better in the field as they were used to the environment. What let these guys down was the lack of guns, and ammunition, and rarely did they out perform a Brit shooting wise.

Col Durnford was in charge of these men, if anyone's seen Zulu Dawn they'll know. :)

just learned about this time period in euro. if this is done well it could be great

Maybe you should include the Swazi as a faction. They fought the british several times and never lost (unlike the Zulu). They were never conquered and became a british protectorate in 1898 (to keep them out of the hands of the boers). Good work on your research of the Zulu, btw.

Hi.

There are no Current Screenshots, We are Currently on {Torque Engine} ~ But We are looking at our own engine soon. The game will be an RTS Not like Total war series, Cause the Boers Did not fight in stack Formations but lose Formations! The Web Will be ready ASAP there is some buggs. You can send me Uniforms at southafricaboerwars@yahoo.com it will be nice of you. The game will be epic mate. I started back in 2006 with the Project. Although it was much practical experience so far. But we are going strong than ever, Once we get some info I'll let you know first. I just can't see the game in an mod, The game is epic it must be build from scratch?

best of Regards
