(AP) Anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Wednesday urged reprisals against American forces in Iraq to protest Israel's Gaza offensive, as Arab anger grows over civilian deaths in the Palestinian territory.

The strongly worded statement signaled a threat by al-Sadr's militia fighters to renew violence against American troops after months of relative calm.

Iraqis have expressed outrage over the Israeli offensive and what is perceived as U.S. inaction, holding protests to show solidarity with the Palestinians. The issue has again put the spotlight on Iraq's relations with Israel as the two countries remain technically at war.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki expressed "great pain and sorrow" over the Israeli offensive and accused the international community of ignoring the plight of the Palestinians.

"It is regrettable that this brutal crime continues with the silence of the international community," he told reporters Tuesday.

He called on other Arab and Muslim nations to "abolish diplomatic relations" with Israel and to "stop all public and clandestine contacts with this murderous regime." Only two Arab countries, Egypt and Jordan, have peace treaties with Israel.

stupid al-sadr isnt he on his last straw by now.

1) He is not. His party is still a large faction in parliament and I believe his militia mainly stopped fighting to not get under the bus against the Badr corps so while mauled is still pretty big.

2) If he is, Badr, Sciri and D'awa(sp) will unify the Shia cause. All three being pro-Iranian organization with closest ties with the Mullah's so it is not quite clear how this would be helpful...

So the formula is to hide in Iran, call followers to go out and get blown away, and claim religious piety. Truly a religous leader for people to follow if seeking to lead a holy life.
Worked during the crusades...why not now.

Actually his party has disbanded, however his supporters are fairly significant, though minor faction. So minor that the rest of the parties felt comfortable in passing a good amount of bills without him.

This would be interesting if it wasn't wrong...

Badr and Dawa are enemies. Iraqis are disillusioned with religious parties, viewing them as incompetent, and even Dawa is trying to throw away its religious, pro-Iran mantle for a nationalist one.

That's news to. His militia got plastered by others pretty hard and they went dormant or broke away but that his faction in the parliament dissolved I did not read anywhere.

Yeah, I put it wrongly. Both parties are heavily intertwined with Iran on all levels and on a personal level. Doesn't matter what politics they make, they are and want Iraq to be good buddies with Iran.

See the law passed I think last year that no party with a militia may have seats in Parliament. It was aimed at Al-Sadr, and at that time Sadr declared he wasn't going to run a party, but rather support individual candidates.

Yeah, I put it wrongly. Both parties are heavily intertwined with Iran on all levels and on a personal level. Doesn't matter what politics they make, they are and want Iraq to be good buddies with Iran.

Dawa is making a break with Iran, especially with the signing of the security agreement. They are going for a nationalist push with an Iraq controlled by Iraqis. Whether their attempt to repaint themselves or now will work is yet to be seen. From what I've read, Iraqis are no fans of foreign meddling, US or Iranian.

Now that is not to say they don't want good relations with Iran, as would anyone with their neighbors, but the idea of being an Iranian puppet is unlikely.

what i thought was more damaging for the US
is Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki comments. Namely,
calling on "other Arab and Muslim nations to "abolish diplomatic relations" with Israel and to "stop all public and clandestine contacts with this murderous regime."

This was definitely damaging for Israel, effect on the US isn't easily apparent, what I think is important is how President Obama acts as Arabs have high hopes for him.

I'm glad Iraq said this, though I think all sides need to get together for peace, if Iraq took a pro-Israel or neutral stance it won't be able to function as an Arab nation.

The US, israels biggest ally in the known world (unless you know, theres some weird alien clan of jews helping them, or God is personally stepping in)

Obama wont make any difference, this is paraphrasing as i cannot find the exact quote, but "israel must remain the undisputed capital of irasel and it must remain undivided"? His staunch support flanked by that of joe biden who "no one is better freind of israel"?
Obama wont be any different.
If this highly destructuve self defeating strategy contiues. the middle east will be reduced to glass, israel has nukes. Why is this such a minor issue for some. Israel has 400 nukes, and i think that estimation is in fact round the 1990's.

I'm glad Iraq said this, though I think all sides need to get together for peace, if Iraq took a pro-Israel or neutral stance it won't be able to function as an Arab nation.
thats the point. he had too.
Im sure i dont need to point out to you
just how pissed the Arab world is right now.

What do you think happens when a war escalates, the fight would be in Iraq and only Iraq will be damaged.

By attacking U.S forces they are damaging there country. That is what I meant.

But it will get worse if they renew fighting.

We should have killed him 4 years ago when we had the chance or send in some CIA assassins though another leader will pop up. I doubt Iraqis will stand for them attacking Americans again so this might be a blessing in disguise to alienate his militia from the Shiite populous and the Iraqi government.

At the expense of the lives of our soldiers and Iraqi citizens.

Here we go again. It amazes me why Iraqis support thugs like Al-Sadr. Don't they realize that the United States would have left all ready had it not been for these militias. Although, Al-Sadr does look like a Jedi. I guess that's a plus.

I agree why wont these brave and fearless Islamic hero kings set an example and strap on a vest and blow themselves up?

Why do they always send others to do what they wont do?
