Console not working in RTW: Gold Edition

I need help!!!
For some reason my console wont come up on my RTW: Gold Edition, I press the (~) tilde key and nothing happens. Anyone know why its doing this, by the way I'm using a laptop running Windows Vista and that version of RTW comes patched up to 1.5.

Odd, I happen to own Rome: Total War Gold Edition, and the console works fine for me. I don't think there is any correlation between Gold Edition and the broken console... If you are using Windows Vista, that could be the source of your problem, I'm sorry to say. But it should work, odd...

I've heard Vista poses problems with the tilde key opening the console...you might want to look into that and see if it really is the problem but I swear that some have said it.

ive got a laptop and vista and i press the button underneth the escape button. hope this helps

Vista definitely (sometimes, sometimes it doesn't) can disable your tilde key. Mine just plain doesn't work either, because of Vista... No way around it. If it doesn't work in game, it can't be fixed (as long as it works outside of the game).

There's a chance that your button might be different if you're in a different country.

I know some of my hotkeys are different than British users.

For me, the tilde key is the ` key to the left of the 1. It is the key to the left of the 1, not neccessarily the ~ key.

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is a Vista issue or an issue of your keys being different. In the meantime, I'll place this in the Technical Help discussion to see if anyone can help with the Vista aspect.

Vista has nothing to do with it. It's a keyboard language issue. US version is `, left of the 1 and it works in Vista or XP.

i have the same problem - running vista on a laptop with french/swiss keyboard settings, and the console won't open up (the button left to the '1')

Vista is not the issue - it's just a red herring.

The problem is your keyboard mappings. On a UK keyboard the RTW console is not opened with the tild key but by the key to the left of the 1 at the top of the keyboard - it comes out as '¬'.

With the same keyboard the M2TW console is opened with the '~' key (to the left of the enter key).

i don't have a UK keyboard. and pressing said key doesn't do anything at all.

Its vista, believe me, i had vista with gold, no console, down to xp, i can use the console, its nothing to do with keyboards dont try it, i had 3 different wired ones in, and a wireless, ah well get xp if you can.

On medieval 2 total war, infact you can open console with vista, with the ' key, its the @ key unshifted, but it doesnt work on rome.

Any other game needing console on pc, like oblivions console doesnt work on vista neither sucks huh

There should be a key somewhere - try various keys to see which is working.

If it's Vista how am I able to get both consols to open without problem? I am using a UK version of Vista Ultimate 64 bit, UK keyboard and language.

first, you go to the map "data".
now go to the map "text".
use a standard text editor (like notepad/word etc.) to open "descr_shortcuts"
go down until u see "misc." (at the start of the line)
there should be a line with "show_console" here, and it says "hidden" behind it.
remove "hidden"

start Rome: Total War, go to controls and press reset to default
there should now be a line "show debug console" in the list of misc. controls
set whatever key u like to it, press the key during the game, and there you go, a nice console

Its the media center version brusilov, Dont know why it stops it from working, it just does, i bought the wrong version of vista, all home edition versions have media center with them, An if he bought a laptop from the shop, im guessing his vista had home edition version too, thus having media center, Just install xp on it mgsfan, it will be fine

OK, so it's a specific type of Vista (media centre).

I'm running the Vista Ultimate Edition 64 bit version on my desktop PC at home - I am failry sure that it comes with media centre. Not that it's ever been used. I use a laptop with XP for away from home and I hate media player as it doesn't let me play multi region DVDs (not all titles are available in Europe).....

Okay, now I have another problem. I could now bring up the console.

However, when I typed add_money 2000 as soon as I typed in the "d" after the "a" the overview comes up. Simply put, I cannot complete writing the code. Is something wrong?

Shouldent do that if you have the console up, all buttons you press go in the console, and not onto the hotkeys if you know what i mean. or go into options, and go to hotkeys, and turn the overview hotkey that comes up to a different key so it doesnt bring it up while in console.

How do I change it so that the diplomac thing (and the like) would not come up through any keys? By that, I mean that I want to view things like diplomacy or whatever using just the mouse, and not the keyboard.

Well you dont need to play the game with the keyboard at all, unless you like moving the camera with the arrow keys, to use diplomacy you left click a diplomat, then right click where you him to go, or where you want him to use diplomacy, say a character or a city.

I do not see how this will fix the problem. It only crashes when i click reset to default for miscellanious controls.
EDIT: I May have figured out what's wrong, but I do have to reinstall it first. I didn't delete the "hidden" that was far above show_console. i only deleted the one immediately above it.
