Thread: Mod Shortcut Runs Vanilla

  1. #1

    Default Mod Shortcut Runs Vanilla

I've installed ROTK, but when I click either the "Start" or "Steam" shortcuts, it runs vanilla M2.

All the patches and the main installation were all installed to my main (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/Medieval II Total War folder.

I uninstalled and reinstalled M2 then validated the game files before I installed the mod.

One of the patches should create a new short cut for use with Steam and the regular version. Please update the mod.

Sorry man, I already said that I've tried the other shortcut and it did the same thing.

My bad, somehow missed that.We had AV programs removing the new BAT file so that might be the cause.

    Proceed as follows:

    1. Browse to the mods\Thre_Kingdoms folder (right click the desktop short cut, choose 'properties' and then click 'open file location' in the new window)
    2. Open the executable.BAT file by right clicking it and choosing 'edit'
    3. Replace kingdoms.exe with medieval2.exe, save.

Using the shortcut now should let you play the mod in Steam.

Your BAT file's content should now look similar to this this:
    Code:
    @echo off
rem Game Start Up file by gigantus
    cd ..\..
    start medieval2.exe @mods\Three_Kingdoms\Configuration.cfg

Okay, thanks, I'll give that a try.

I had a separate problem which meant I had to do a complete uninstall of Steam so I'm just waiting for M2 to reinstall; in the meantime, I was wondering about one thing:

This mod is installed into the main Medieval II folder, right? But some mods aren't? I was reading a thread earlier for TATW where it said to install to the mods folder. Is this right?

I'm not trying to install TATW at the same time, by the way. That would be too much.

This mod installs into to the mods folder (automatically, unless there is something wrong with your registry entry - see instructions in the download thread) - that is standard procedure by now. There are only two reasons to install into the main folder: the mod is very old (just after release of M2TW) or it is a sub mod like 'better water' which is meant to effect all mods.
There is no problem if you install TATW as well as it installs into the mods folder, too - they will not interfere with each other.

    Okay, thanks.

I've got it to launch now, but I started a game as Liu Bei, then it crashed with the "Uh oh, sorry pal" message as soon as I hit end turn.

One step further. I have a feeling that it might be connected to the problem with the short cut\BAT file, eg installation related.

Can you please install all the patches and quick fixes in sequence once more? Please make sure that the installation path points to the medieval ii total war folder and nowhere else.
If you do not encounter any problems while reinstalling have a look at the stickied readme here, start the game and then present the report once more here or in a new thread.

Well, I tried again and it worked; I then played about 6 turns as Liu Bei and it crashed, then I remembered to turn the log on. I then played a good 20ish turns as Cao Cao and it just crashed after a battle.

Here's the log after that crash:

I hope that tells you something useful.

The mod's great by the way. Love the soundtrack, the atmosphere, the campaign map, the general units, the detail, the lot of it. Really great work.

Ummm, 41MB. My connection isn't exactly lightning fast, but as a general request for submitting large TXT files: compress before uploading. My guess is that it will less then one MB then. (That's why it was part of the ReadMe )

I am not having much hope with a battle exit crash, to be honest - it is pretty random and not well documented.

Thanks for sticking with the mod so far, despite the hassle.

The end of the log reminded me of a loading screen we had in the 1648 mod. It is caused by inconsistency in the descr_transition and text\quote files. Looking closer I found errors right at the end of the list, explaining why this error wasn't found so far. I have posted a fix in the patches section, please apply this fix.

Hey I really want to play this mod, and cant get it to work for some reason, any help would be very much appreciated. I did just like the instructions said, I used the torrent, and then put all three in the same folder, double clicked the application, and installed it. Afterwards instead of shortcuts, I get the shortcuts names and instead of an icon I have little document/window icons. And when I click on the regular one, it says that its searching for the Rise of the Three kingdoms.exe. I dont know what I did wrong, so any guidance would be great. Thank you

You need to install the patch and the quick fixes as well, that will solve your problem if you have installed into the correct folder.
