Control large armies

Can someone explain how this works in the single player campaign? I clicked the 'control large army' box before one of the battles, but it didn't seem to work. I was expecting to be able to control my army and the army of my ally, but I could only control my own army? Any ides?
 
Yeah Allied armies are controlled by.. your allies.

To control a huge army you need 2 of your own stacks reinforcing each other
 
No, you can only control your own army.
You can control 2 stacks of your own army at the same time though.
