AP weapons and shields

Hey, I did a quick forum search but didn't turn up any definitive answer. Do AP weapons cut shield effectiveness in half, or just armor? Would make a huge difference for some units!

Only armor.
Bonus:stats is not everything...AP weapons have usually slower attack speed

Yep. The crossover point where AP weapons begin to pay off is where the opponent is wearing something like heavy mail or better.

Mercenary macemen provide good thug muscle, for many early era campaigns. Keeping one or two with your main stacks really shores up the begining spear militia parade...

Ja ja... Now staying with the AP theme...The Breton Mercenary Cav are great pick ups if your a javilin starved faction. As general killers or even as decoys, they earn their keep.

They are also very effective on charge in early eras, as good as knights at a lower cost. Really they only lack when getting stuck in melee or vs lots of archers but knights shouldn't be getting stuck in melee anyway so really only mass archers are their handicap. Their ability to take out generals and flank, then charge at a lower cost and easier replacement than knights more than makes up for that single deficiency anyway, just use your BG on the archers and the Bretons on everything else.

I love Bretons, they make taking those general and feudal knight defended settlements much easier to take early on. Bretons and Longbowmen also go a long way in rounding out Scandinavian armies when facing France or HRE.

See there...you were relevent even though you were imurssed in your own in your irrelevancy...

OT: Kay digging to the bottom of the mercenary AP rooster, don't forget the often ignored crossbowmen. No not exactly $cheap$ but in the early going of early era campaigns, they can provide surprizing muscle if utilizied correctly.
