    Default RS 3 install steam

    Hi there,

Could anyone point me to a reliable set of instructions for RS3 with steam. I have gold and Alexander, I have tried following instructions I have come across online, but they seem to be lacking in coherence or comprehensiveness. Suffice to say something is going wrong because It CTD's everytime I start a campaign, after loading about 10% of the bar.

    Thanks in advance

I know this is for BI, but it might worth trying that.

    here a quote from moddb:

    STEAM USERS ONLY:
RSIII will NOT work at all with the Steam versions of RTW or BI. So, if you must play RSIII in Steam, you will need a copy of the RTW Alexander expansion. Recommended installation:
    1. Copy the contents of the Rome Total War Alexander folder to another folder, ie., 'C:\games\RSIII' or something like that.
    2. Rename the 'Alexander' folder 'No_Alexander' or something similar, if you want to play Custom Battles.
    3. Then install RSIII into this folder.
    4. Use the launcher to play.
this means copy the Alexander folder from steam/steamapps/common/Rome Total War Gold
into for exampale the newly created folder c:/RSIII
    you now have
    c:/RSIII/Alexander

rename the Alex folder into No_Alexander (c:/RSIII/No_Alexander)

then run the installer of 3.1 standalone and point into the RSIII folder!
Not the Alexander or No_Alexander folder

run the exe choose the alex exe in the RSIII menue at the beginning.

Hey thanks for the reply. Before I do this. I need to note that my RTW gold and my RTW Alexander are 2 separate installs in 2 different folders. Does this change anything at all? Some instructions have said you need to combine both RTW gold and Alex before install?

    Update,

I followed your instructions and they dont work. I then copied and pasted all the files from the RS3 folder i made to the originale Alex folder where i installed it in steam. It loads up. However, when you try to start a campaign it loads 10% then CTD. I mback to where i started.

    Appreciate the replies though thanks

Here's two tutorials for steam, one is for RS III and the other is for any mod > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNOhyGx2NhQ&t=4s > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAIKSmpCKHQ&t=188s there are many players who have said they worked.

Hi Leonardo, I'm afraid this will not work, afaik from dvk 901 steam broke the game when they patched it to allow multi-player, RTW has to be v1.5 for RSIII, after the steam update it was patched as v1.5.1 and this is why it will not play. The only way is to use the ALX .exe v1.9 which is an expansion and was not affected by the steam update.

After trying for almost a week to get the mod to work, I finally solved it. I too was running the Steam version of RTW Gold and Alex. Game would crash 3/4 of the way through the loading bar when I attempted to start a campaign.

He has reverted his steam exe for the game back to 1.5 (steam version is now 1.51). I did the same and now RS 3.1 works for me. The download for the file is in his video description. I took the files from retail 1.5 and chucked them in my RTW folder, replacing the existing files. Then copy and pasted all of RTW Alexander files and RS3.1 files into the same folder and used the RS launcher as normal.

Hope this helps as it helped me.

    Hi mate,

Thanks for the reply. I ended up installing fourth age total war instead. Will try this in the future though, thanks.

    Hi anyone,

I've tried the various methods and got nowhere.

I first gave the 3.1 combined install file on moddb a go and got the chat_filter.san error, so I gave the way in the video Saul linked to a go and I tried it twice and reinstalled everything to be on the safe side and now I'm getting a message telling me I didn't install the mod correctly, but I did it exactly as said. Except for one thing the Youtuber didn't show himself doing which was when copying over the RS3 files I was asked to overwrite some of the vanilla files, which I did.

This really sucks because I have played Roma Surrectum in the past and it is, unquestionably, a modding masterpiece. Unfortunately nobody can bloody play it! I even tried to pirate (I know, naughty) a non-steam copy this morning and ended up with a Steam copy anyway so now I'm out of ideas (to be clear, I do own a steam copy and used to own a disc copy back in the day, I've paid my dues!.

Edit: bloody hell I tried the launcher, but not the shortcut I'd made, and it seems to have worked....for now
