The timer can be turned on and off at the campaign menu so I would recommend having the timer on always but then turning it off when you are attacking a custom settlement. Best of both worlds then. ...

Again, 500 unit limit: having two types of trolls with identical stats purely so that one can be called 'cave' and another 'hill' is not worth it.
In the interest of unit saving (owing to the 500 limit), I think we will likly stick with the current plan of having only 3 trolls:
1) Trolls (available in every troll region)
2) Snow Trolls...
