Id just like some suggestions of good space games.

Ive played Freelancer, and that was pretty sweet, if a bit Linear.

Ive got X2 floating around here somewhere too, but i bought that when i was younger and didnt have much patience for a steep learning curve.

If its still a decent game, ill give it a go.

I dont really want a strategy game, im thinking more about flying my own ship around etc etc.

Honestly, I highly expect that to become very boring very quickly. I mean, how are they going to fill up those bazillions of star systems with things that are not going to repeat themselves over and over, starting out with the very structure and look of each star system? If they're really trying to do that, then the game will likely never be released at all... :laughter:

They're developing a random generator on a massive scale so they don't have to create all the Gazzilions of planets. Only the "key" ones so to say.

Also, Star Control 2.

That game is gold.

X3 is a very good, deep space sim. Bit of a steep learning curve, but it can be very rewarding.

Eve is also a very deep rewarding experience, but is an MMO. Also a very steep learning curve.

Independence War 2 and the Crossfire mod for Freelancer.

DarkStarOne was a good 'flyingyourspaceshipyourselfgame', although repetitive, and eventually boring.

Mass effect 2

X3 IS way to hard to master and when you do it gets boring.

EVE however is much easier but you need a good connection and always connected.

Not sure of anymore anyway :P

Definitely X3: Terran Conflict. It's a complex game and takes quite a while to learn but it's totally worth it. It also has a very active modding/scripting community which adds even more depth and content to the experience (or should I say Xperience :surprise: )

Still.....Sins of a solar empire

...is overrated. >_>

If you have a decent computer then you should definitely shell out for X3TC. Never played X2 but I've read that it's by far the hardest and slow-paced of the series. X3TC is the easiest but still takes a long time to learn for newcomers, and has way more content and features, way more community mods and scripts, and way better graphics. You could probably skip X3 Reunion too since the plots aren't exactly the main feature of the game (although they aren't half bad either), and X3:TC is basically a vastly improved X3R.

You don't even really need that great of a computer to run it. I can run it on my laptop with 1680x1050 resolution, everything on high except [DEL]HDR and[/DEL] AA, and all I have is a Nvidia 8600 GS with 512 mb of memory, a 2.4 Ghz dual core, and 4 gigs of bargain brand RAM with 64-bit Windows 7. That's a pretty low end system by today's standards.

But you have other good mods for FS2 too. BTL is a minimod compared to TBP (the Babylon Project).

And loads of extra campaings and missions.

+1

X³ TC with a few choice mods and you'll be flying your own huge destroyer, command an entire fleet of fighters, frigates and more in enormous space battles.

It's also fun to just watch two AI factions duke it out and just clean up the battlefield, combine this with some salvage mods and you could potentially loot yourself an entire fleet.

So its really a toss up between X³ TC and Freespace 2?

Thanks dudes.

Ill be sure to check them out.

Ive just had an urge to fly around nebulas and shoot space pirates.

Another vote for Freespace 2 here! It really is a most excellent space combat sim.
Also, be sure to get Open Freespace for it. Not only does it redo the textures to make the game look much better (even though the original still looks good), it also adds various new scripting options for modders, which means you can download much more complex custom campaigns.

I-War 2: Edge of Chaos is nice, but quite old (not as old as Freespace 2, though). There are several add-ons that modify/improve a few annoying niggles in the vanilla version. There's also the first Independence War (nowadays most likely found as a Deluxe bundle with its expansion, Defiance), but that's even older and not directly related to I-War 2. The only problem with those games is that you can't save during a mission, which can be massively frustrating if the mission is a multi-part one and you can't return to base between parts.

Edit: Oh, also Terminus and Tachyon: The Fringe.
