Somebody on the blog made a good point. If it was the other way around and the Jewish family were Christians and the Italian was a Jew and the same sorts of words were uttered, the ADL would quickly come down on the Christian family and accuse them of anti-Semitism.
Racism is ok in the world as long as the victim of it is a european white.

In this massive clamp down on racism it seems that racism still does not apply to some of the previously targeted groups. What many people dont understand is that any sort of racism is wrong, just because you are from a minority group that has previously been discriminated against does not mean that you can now do the discriminating.

But also of interest to me was the comments...one of them is signed "a true Italian from Howard Beach". Wonder which part of Italy that's in.
I find people in the US (and Australia) tend to have an unhealthy attachment to a country they've never been to, in this guy's case Italy. I notice 'Greeks', the 'Dutch', and some 'Irish' also do it. In New Zealand if someone speaking with a kiwi accent suddenly said "I'm Italian" or whatever, they'd get laughed at. It's just something I don't get, hanging on to the country your great great great grandfather came from.
I mean if I supported Ireland and England (where my ancestors supposedly came from) in sport or something I'd kick my own arse.

I can understand Jewish people doing it, because the religion is very closely tied to their cultural identity, but not most others.

Oh man... this brings back some freakin memories. I swear, I tried way too hard to stop myself from bawling out with laughter anytime I was at my friend's house in New York. His ultra-orthodox parents really let their older daughter have it anytime she tried to bring home a, quote, "goyim boyfriend", lol.

Thankfully, these experieces I had as a young teen gave me enough experience to tactfully handle my own situation when I started dating a number of Jewish girls. They certainly knew I was Muslim in that neighborhood, but I built myself a 'most respectable goyim you ever did see' reputation in short time.

it's because there is no American ethnicity (opposed to say...a Finnish ethnicity), so we look to our ancestral countries. I don't care if you're proud of your heritage (I sometimes proudly state the fact that I'm of Italian ancestry) but some trumpet it waaaay too loudly. A few twc members come to mind...

There is also many levels to how "traditional" a jew is. Orthodox, reformist and conservatives. Orthodox, for example, are far more likely to act like that father when they are angry. Infact, I don't blame him at all for cursing. Heck, I've heard cursing inside my own synagogues and churches that I have been in. Yes, church... don't judge me for it. Orthodox jews are very very adherant to the very core of judaism. Nothing would persuade them not to take the Sabbath. They pray multiple times a day and study the texts and instruct their families. Conservatives are alittle less stringent and reformists are the most liberal.

However, I would like to say that there is a fourth division, one that the above three would deny because they do not believe they are judaic any longer. Messianic jews, or Hissidics ( excuse my bad spelling ) I am one, as you might have seen from the comment about church. I am extremely liberal and my mother told me she'd actually prefer me to date a christian over a jew....however, I myself wouldn't care who I'd date as long as we were happy and we both respected our own faiths and she would let me practice mine while she practiced hers...and I have proved that in the past.
Please don't be angry at the parents in this tap, they reacted the best way they could react given the situation....but they don't remember that the blood goes from mother to son, not father to son and blood does not mix. The child would be Jewish. I am jewish, and my father was Catholic.
PS: My own personal beliefs actually have me hating nearly all catholic faiths while if I chose a Protestant faith, I would go with Mennonite if there was no Messianic Synagogue nearby.

Speaking from personal experience my mother who is Mexican doesn't approve of me marrying a Caucasian even though I'm a half breed! (1/2 German, 1/2 Mexican). She says some pretty borderline stuff (like you should see more Latino women or when are you going to settle down with our kind. ) and no one calls her on it because its okay for minorities to be insular.

I honestly don't think Jews are a minority in the US..we're greatly respected (for the most part) and are given some of the highest financial, banking, brokering jobs in the U.S. There have been -several- Jewish C.E.O.s running powerful companies...and I would not be surprised if you called up the IRS and asked to speak to one of their men...that they were a Jew. Yes, I'm being stereotypical...but sadly, its true. A majority of Jews know how to manipulate money for their benefit...or the benefit of others. Myself included...and I'm poor.
