    Thanks alot for the changelog, cant wait to start a campaign with 2.4! I've seen that the romans have been reverted to normal tight loose formation. What was the reasoning behind them having a tighter formation instead of the loose one before the update?

    There were reasons, but the deal-breaker was that the AI wouldn't close them up when necessary, even if the human player would.

    Do I read it right? You've beefed up professional and elite phalangitai? Honestly, I felt those were good, maybe even too good already. However, I've noticed that now, when dragging multiple units, they're now placed with gaps between them, previously they stood shoulder to shoulder.

    Lots of new units indeed. Mostly in the east (which is no longer an undifferentiated Sakan blob), but other places too. The African roster is almost complete now, barring the Ethiopian "feltaphracts", for example.

    Yes, an attack boost and a reduction in the delay for professional and elite phalanxes. Mostly to make them deadlier from the front.

    Not certain how I feel about the new tech on pikes. I'm messing round in custom battles right now. I think at the least the gaps between consecutive units are a bit big - how would I close them if i wanted to?

    fighting pike vs pikes if you just sit there and let them walk into you, it looks reasonable, if you've got both blocks walking at each other it seems to become a structureless mess fairly fast

    I had guessed the mechanics were that as the formations werent that deep if you got one body through a gap by chance all of a sudden a bunch of the pikes swivel to deal with the one guy, now theres fewer spear points to stop the next guy who goes down the gap etc. I put the formation depth upto 15, like a said, seems to work if you dont given an attack order, but if you do, fairly fast you've no idea whos fighting for who.

    I will say i think the speed with which they cover ground is an improvement. the just seem to move smoother now

    I'm seeing (more or less) intact pike units walk through the gaps between my phalanx. in short i dont think you should be giving attack orders to pike units into other pike units

    ironically i also think the higher move speed makes it easier for the ai to dodge a straight head to head fight, it tries to turn your units by attacking at an angle then walk though (examples I've hopefully attached)

    We removed the "prec" attribute, which is bugged. It leads to AI units freezing in the act of reloading/throwing, making them much easier for the human player to defeat.

    Given the number of our units which have precursor javelins, that was a significant issue. You have to manually direct them to charge, which is a small price to pay for the AI behaving better.

    Messed around in custom battles some more. I think its fair to say that the changes have a pretty significant impact.

    I'd done a lot of pike vs hoplite tests previously, and i knew IF you had a deep pike formation, the pikes were very strong.

    If you get 8 or 9 mid pike units vs 8 or 9 shield bearer units you can literally afk (in the default longer thinner line) and you've a real chance of winning, provided you're utterly stationary to receive the charge (any kind of movement at all and all bets are off). This is much more pike favoured than any of my previous tests had been.

    I had assumed that if i deployed in a deeper square formation things would get really ugly, that is to say the pikes would be dominant. I was wrong. My best guess, possibly due to the larger gaps between units, the relative number of spearpoints vs big gaps is much smaller with a deep formation. I think this possibly even increases the number of enemies that get all the way through the formation and out the other side in a mini envelopment.

    but it now seems you want less square pike blocks, when previously that was the best way of ensuring they would ultimately chew through enemy units.

    Indeed if you can in a real practical battle just sit your long pike lines there to take contact, they are "really" strong right now - head to head professional level troops have a real chance breaking elites

    Having M2TWEOP in EBII is a big deal. I wonder if the recent update to how you can integrate the EOPEDU into the EDB was a factor in integrating into EBII. What that means that every culture can have a unique unit or two that represents it. I can only imagine the possibilities. The only thing now is the faction limit, which is mostly for AI purposes such as attacking player cities, engaging in trade, and not having all out war with every rebel on the map because it's all one faction.
    Creator of UNREAL, balance mod series that promises changes to everything Total War, and it's offshoots, MEGA for other games. Basically, I'm reject Radious.

    CAI now seems to be a bit hyper-aggresive with ships at very early stage in a game ( turn 12). Bosphoros block Carthaginian ports. Rome block KH(Rhodos) port, Leusitane block Epirote ports... i guess not game breaking, immersion little bit perhaps. AI was over confident in launching naval invasions already in 2.35, which led into same scenario in all of my 4 games - neglection of land expansion, neglection of defense its territory in a favour of naval invasion. In my first game i thought it was some missfortune, but all the following games proved me wrong.

    hayastan wandering by foot all the way to attempt to ake Khersonesos. Pontos wandering to take Maiotis. Getai prefered to take halikarnasos instead of expand more into west. etc etc etc. And all of this contribute to Seleukids being unopposed, because Ptolemaioi biggest dream now is to posses Knosos.

    Now according to this new naval aggresion i am bit affraid a things get only worse. Why? Before It was a coinflip who will prevail- either in Greece or in Anatolia and further east. Now it is such a mess and sorry, nonsense that it basicaly is me(whatever faction i play) against ultimate Seleukids ( which was the case anyway in 60% of my games from previous versions)..

    I really mean no offense, great mod i enjoy for nearly a decade. I would like to know what is a purpose of these changes, because to me these naval lines( or whatever are these called) only make a lot of AI factions irelevant, uncompetitive. I guess intention is good, but AI can't absolutely deal with that.

    Honestly, I've noticed this too; this tendency to attack all ports indiscriminately; on the other hand, as far as the evolution of the campaign is concerned, I've seen factions more active on conquest but I haven't yet seen the "craziness" ( removed from the absurd manias ti thalassocracy, such as the case of Carthage besieging every port! ). I do not question the difficulty of balancing AI behavior, especially on a dated game, but beyond the sttrategic progressions I find it absurd that ai prefers to launch distant attacks in my home without consolidating minimally in its neighboring regions.

    AI was definitely worse in 2.35A compared to previous version. 2.4 is even worse than 2.35A . AI now waste their ships with senseless port blockades, of unreachable factions rather than transporting its armies . Carthage stuck with armies at Sardinia and Sicilia, but at war with 10 factions at T50 - 8 of them are irrelevant It really got a bit absurd. I am going to try piter AI, hopefuly it will pass on this version.

    Unfortunately, there is a lot of hardcoded stuff we can't change in the naval CAI. The upshot is that there's basically a binary toggle; either we have naval invasions (and all the annoying stuff you're observing) or we don't.

    I've spent a fair amount of time messing around with the phalanx. in a phalanx vs phalanx fight I think the ai walking its phalanx right through your lines is a problem.

    I've compared 2.4 with another mod I've played a bit; stainless steel historical improvement 0.98.

    comparing their Pikemen vs Pikemen to 2.4s Phalangitai vs Phalangitai i think is informative:

    in Pikemen vs Pikemen the units fight more or less head to head, more or less consistently until one side runs. this works if you up their armour to very high values i.e., this isnt just a result of SSHIP fights ending sooner by default. this works in or out of guard mode. this works with EB stats or SSHIP stats (or SSHIP with enhanced armour). this works with EB's melee-hit-rate and SSHIPs melee-hit-rate in Battle_config. I'm not going to say its perfect, but I think its a good model.

    in Phalangitai vs Phalangitai irrespective of these values there is a high chance that the ai will try and walk a phalanx unit through your line (i believe ultimately to flank) or scuttle a phalanx unit through their line parallel to your your line (before trying to overload on of you units in a kind of 2 vs 1). I also spent ages fiddling with unit heights, radius, weights, attack values, defence values, moral values etc. nothing ive done in 2.4 proved all that robust to stopping the behaviour (unless you count breaking the ai due to poor defence + low moral vs high attack).

    I believe this suggests this is ultimately a question of how the ai is managing the units with little to do with anything in the EDU.

    If there were any ideas what could be in the EB files that is dictating ai phalanx behaviour i'd be happy to test some more, but I've more than run out of my own ideas, and I've spent some time googling to see what else comes up in the discussion on phalanx units in medieval 2.

    I get that this is a complex system, its possible that any change would impact more than just phalanx units, but i'm personally not convinced by the current phalanx vs phalanx behaviour.

    I feel that togglinng off seems to ebe the better option as it stands now, he many naval invasion are nor usefull or timely most of the time.

    I honestly feel that the damage is so big (was already so in 2.35 that its breaking the game and makes it unplayable.

    I think I solved the issue in custom battles. I had hoped to get some campaign testing too, but my current campaign isnt really offering many opportunities.

    The "walk through" behaviours I reported and the zig-zag line I've seen reported elsewhere seems to come from the top formation of descr_formations_ai

    I first replaced the EB formation with the SSHIP one (where I believe the pikes behaved better), then I spent a while making my best guess at rebuilding the intended EB formation using SSHIP's formation as a guide. the two armies line up more closely. I observed no walk-through in testing.

    I have no idea if this breaks anything else - i have no idea what or if scripting interacts with this file for instance - and my campaign hasnt given me meaningful testing in that context.

    I also found that (in custom battles) if you increase width and reduce the height of pikes a little you basically stop hoplite-type soldiers running through the formation in what looks like a charge animation, but again this has highly limited testing beyond custom battles
