Russian bombers never came close to Portugal. These bombers were intercepted over the Baltic, Black, and North Seas. Pourtuguese fighters are part of the NATO mission in the Balitics, hence why it was the Portuguese who intercepted them.

From what i have read, the bombers flew West of Portugal, not to their airspace. But there were two Portuguese flights.

On Tuesday, German and Danish planes were involved in tracking them as well as aircraft from non-NATO states Sweden and Finland. On Wednesday, Portuguese F-16s posted in the Baltic intercepted a similar group of fighters and fighter-bombers.

I guess another group of Portuguese F-16s intercepted the bombers over the Atlantic.

TU 95 is a great plane, its based off the B 17 but later had the engines the Soviet Union is famous for having.

There's a great history of aircraft building in the Soviet Union, especially huge jumbo planes. They built the first 6 engine one in the 30s.

Could you be more clear? I asked what maneuvering you are referring to.

NATO baltic policing, since you are totally ignorant to what it is, has been routine activity since 2004 when the baltic states joined NATO, as those states lack the air capability to conduct 24/7 air surveillance. Its the same thing in Albania and Luxembourg.

So no, your assumption that Russia is reacting to this purely defensive NATO activity 10 years after it started is laughably wrong.

Trust me however I DO understand your mentality of 'states neighboring Russia with defensive capabilities and independence are aggreessive threats to mother Russia'.

Perhaps, although the serious inflation of rouble is real.

Russia's central bank has raised its key interest rate to 9.5% from 8% as it seeks to tackle inflation.

The 1.5 percentage point increase was higher than expected, with analysts having forecast a rise of 0.5 percentage points.

The bank has already raised rates from 5.5% at the start of the year but the moves have failed to combat inflation.

A weak rouble and a ban on western food imports has kept inflation stubbornly high.

"If external conditions improve, and a persistent trend for lowering inflation and inflation expectations emerges, the Bank of Russia will be ready to start to ease its monetary policy," the central bank said.

The new rate will take effect on 5 November. The last rise was imposed at the end of July.

The central bank said that inflation had reached 8.4% and would remain above 8% until the end of March.

Economic growth is expected to almost grind to a halt in the final three months of this year and in the first quarter of 2015.

The rouble briefly firmed after the bank's decision was announced, but then fell back into negative territory.

The rise comes as Russia said it would will resume shipments of natural gas to Ukraine after Kiev makes its first payment for previous supplies next week.

Or maybe it's internal feuding in the Russian Armed Forces over who gets more money for their prestige projects. Like the Air Force getting all it's fighters replaced by the T-50, or the Russian navy wanting new boomers and hunter-killers, and well a surface navy that isn't rusting and incapable of going to sea regularly. Or the Army that is just downright horrible and have failed spectacularly with it's contract soldier programs and can't even get a decent C2 system running.

Not that any of it justifies being a total asshat towards your neighbours, but then again Russia just doesn't know better.

Ahem... since Portugal is way further from Russia than a bomber can fly, I checked the article.
Russian bombers did not fly over Portugal, on the other side of Europe. They were intercepted by Portugese aircraft that serve NATO in the Baltic states.

Ofcourse, that doesn't invalidate the arguments of the OP, just wanted to make it clear that Russians are not flying all over Europe.

This news is from yesterday events, and from today respectively. The baltic, Estonia event was from a while back... Also I read RAF grounded a Civilian russian transport as well...
Today was two Tupolev-95 more btw, yesterday was only one.
Two Tupolev-95 Aircraft approached the Portuguese airspace today, they were spoted in the west coast of the UK to the South of Portugal , being escorted by the Norwegian , British and Portuguese Air Force.
They indeed did not fly over Portugal or UK, but they did go near NATO controled airspace...

Considering this Tupolev-95 are quite outdated from the cold war, even if they are Strategic bombers.
I hear some of them are actualy nuclear powered.

Because Portugal and Estonia are allies. Also, Portugal doesn't want to colonize Estonia via a large group of Portuguese speaking settlers, unlike a certain other country.
NATO, US, and EU politics towards Russia are one thing, and I agree that they should be up for scrutiny, but that doesn't negate the fact that Russian imperialism has been a constant threat to the Balic states for centuries, to this very day.
