Could you be more clear? I asked what maneuvering you are referring to.

NATO baltic policing, since you are totally ignorant to what it is, has been routine activity since 2004 when the baltic states joined NATO, as those states lack the air capability to conduct 24/7 air surveillance. Its the same thing in Albania and Luxembourg.

So no, your assumption that Russia is reacting to this purely defensive NATO activity 10 years after it started is laughably wrong.

Trust me however I DO understand your mentality of 'states neighboring Russia with defensive capabilities and independence are aggreessive threats to mother Russia'.

Because Portugal and Estonia are allies. Also, Portugal doesn't want to colonize Estonia via a large group of Portuguese speaking settlers, unlike a certain other country.
NATO, US, and EU politics towards Russia are one thing, and I agree that they should be up for scrutiny, but that doesn't negate the fact that Russian imperialism has been a constant threat to the Balic states for centuries, to this very day.

Or maybe it's internal feuding in the Russian Armed Forces over who gets more money for their prestige projects. Like the Air Force getting all it's fighters replaced by the T-50, or the Russian navy wanting new boomers and hunter-killers, and well a surface navy that isn't rusting and incapable of going to sea regularly. Or the Army that is just downright horrible and have failed spectacularly with it's contract soldier programs and can't even get a decent C2 system running.

From what i have read, the bombers flew West of Portugal, not to their airspace. But there were two Portuguese flights.

TU 95 is a great plane, its based off the B 17 but later had the engines the Soviet Union is famous for having.

There's a great history of aircraft building in the Soviet Union, especially huge jumbo planes. They built the first 6 engine one in the 30s.

The Tu-95 was almost a completely fresh design by Tupolev incorporating swept wings, tricycle landing gear, turboprop engines and counter-rotating props. It was designed to compete against Myasishchev's M-4 which was supposed to be the Soviet answer to the B52 but was never able to achieve an adequate range.
