Idk if they have a secondary weapon, but you're definitely going to want to use their axes, the AP bonus means that it is more then possible to beat cataphracts. They're a bit fragile iirc so you're not to meet their charge head on, and they don't withstand missile fire really at all, but in a good engagement they can eat cataphracts alive.

Just more rock paper scissors. If maidens are sent against catas already engaged they will massacre them. If forced to meet the charge head on things get dicey for them.

If you get a surround on the catas with your maidens they should be able to chew them up, same with the Desert axe cav.

Make sure to ctrl click to get them to use their axes otherwise they will charge with lances. Or is it alt click its been a while. I remember head hunting maidens massacring cats.

Indeed it has, Yojimbo, for what you said wasn't entirely accurate.
HHM will always pull axes. They have no other weapons. However, on Cataphracts, you MUST press Alt-Click on the attack if you want armor piercing.

Oh oops I was sure they had lances as well i haven't played Rome in so long maybe i should play again just for old times sake.

Don't cataphracts also have an armor-piercing secondary weapon, the mace? If you use those, shouldn't they destroy head-hunting maidens? You can't do this test in single player because the AI doesn't use the AP weapon.

Indeed, the mace is AP, but that is the reason why you should only engage with your maidens on already engaged cataphracts, because a cataphract charge can do a lot of damage to your maidens.
