What would I have to edit to remove that filter that gives the game a somewhat "painted" look? It is most noticeable in this picture for example. I prefer a sharper, clearer image personally, but would love to use the SMAA from SweetFX and all the rest of the goodies

You can use SMAA from your graphics card. Just use the GEMv2.1 it will be what you looking for.

Ok, I think I have figured out the steam shot conversion deal now. Its still saving in a small picture though. I cant get the pic any larger. Any tips on this?

    Pick looks good!

I cant tell well from far, I never had that issue and I saw it worked for other games for you so it should also in this case. Check again to have:
A: JPG file that you upload.
B: Same screen-resolution on both files.
C: Refresh screenshot view in steam after switching the files.
    Dont know anything else.

Thats just it, my monitor is a wide screen but that shouldnt make much of a difference with the game though. I do not have widescreen checked in game.

What GEMv4Aestate is bringing you (not final yet)

"can you feel it?" more realistic feeling of heat/summer

    (with experimental DOF)

"you will be blind" with real blinding brightness

    SUMMER is coming ...

    LuciferHawk,
i know this is a M2TW-mod, but I'm curious: can it also be done for RTW-mods ?
if no, please can you explain why it can not be done ?

It can be and it was already done in a similar way for Roma Surrectum II.
I told already someone that I would look into it and he tried himself. All you need to do is a port (dx8 to dx9 converter) and you can actually use the exact same settings like GEM has for RTW.

Note: Textures and also the engine are important to really make it look good. So I doubt RTW can still do that much of improvement from RSII which is already super hardware hungry.
