Huge "flickering fps" problem with m2

Well, i installed medieval 2 on my new gaming PC. I open it up and do a quick battle. So i shut it down to tweak the prefs.cs file a bit. I open it up and something's wrong. When i go in the skirmish battle(or whatever it's called) it can be most noticeable in the faction selection screen. The white outlines around the shields are flickering too fast (you know, the "fade in, fade out" effect it does.) and sometimes, they seem to jump from faded in to faded out

Anyway i just ignore it. i start a battle england vs france and something really

ed up is oging on.
The flickering happens here too. one moment my units seem to be in one pose the other they aint. Did i also mention the enemy army walked half a mile and charged my army in the first 3 seconds? it's like the FPS is TOO HIGH.
When i quit i get a "major graphics error" or something saying my graphics options are too high and my game CTDs.
I put the graphics down to low and it still dont fix anything. I reinstall the game and ITS STILL FLICKERING!!!

edit: Installed 1.2 patch and im still getting the error

I can't live without medieval 2! please help!!!

It lloks like you upgraded too good. Turn up the refresh rate on your monitor and see if that helps.

That said you might want to "redo" your cfg file. If memory serves right, then the game creates a new one if you delete the old one. Just tried and it does. Little note: only change things manually in the cfg if you know what you are doing. Graphics settings can be changed in the game. Other settings are know, like unlimited men on the field, allusers, that kind of entry.
Some esoteric ones like litterpackage or some such I leave alone until I have some time to figure it out or somebody tells me.
Summary: incorrect settings in the cfg file can ruin your day!

how do i turn up the refresh rate?

anyway i'll try moving the .cfg file somewhere else, see if that works..

my life man. this game is the best game i've ever played and this flickering fps

is like

ing malaria.

Let me explain it more in detail:

For about one second the FPS is normal, then on the next second it multiplies by about 10 times before restarting the cycle. you get me?

I could do it in ATI's CCC. It's part of the options and you can game force it by writing it to it's profile. I know Nividia has it. also because I saw it when I had an Nvidia card.

i found out how to turn it up but it blurs my screen in a vertical line at certain intervals. also it made my taskbar go off the screen.

That didn't work.

Set your refresh rate back to default and delete the medieval2.preferences.cfg and let the game make you a new one. When you tweak it, you do so at your own risk. Been there, done that.
