Quite corect.
The term comes from the word Theera [gr:Θύρα] which means door.
The shield that looked like doors called theeraeoi [gr: Θυρεοί] since the mycenean eras. From that point Greeks called theeraeoi ALL shields that were long and did not belong to other types like hoplon,peltee/pelta etc...
With the definition of Jirissis the word would sound like θουρεοι that would be totaly incorect in all greek dialects.

The difference from ancient to modern greek phonology make it quite difficult, I believe the dipthong 'ou' is pronounced as /y/ in modern greek, and since most people can't read IPA, and the sounds /r/, /y/, /o/ and /e/ are not present in the english language, it makes it more difficult to explain. I could record myself, but your ears would burst out in tears when hearing such magnificent voice, your eardrums might bleed as well, but it's not a big deal.
