Default Wainriders Official Announcement and Faction Previews

The Fourth Age Total War Team Presents
    Wainriders

The story of the Third Age of the north west of Middle-earth is one of constant struggle against the power, malice, and treachery of Sauron the Enemy. In T.A. 1851 a new chapter in this conflict began with unforeseen invasion of the Wainriders, a numerous and warlike confederacy of Easterling tribes, and took a terrible turn in T.A. 1856 with the shocking death of Narmacil II of Gondor in the Battle of the Plains and the defeat and rout of his army. For the first time in more than a millennium Gondor is threatened with destruction at the hands of an external foe and not even the wise can say how the conflict will play out in the coming years.

Yet this war, momentous as it is, is far from the only element of Sauron's long-planned revenge against the West. The North-kingdom of Arnor has all but faded away, and the remnant of Arthedain and its Elven allies are hard pressed once again by the might of the Witch King and the unrelenting forces of Angmar. Refugees from the shattered kingdoms of Rhovanion flee to the west and north, seeking new and safer homes in strange and wild lands. In the roots of the mountains Goblins and Dwarves clash in an increasingly bitter feud, while Wargs and other foul creatures prowl the darkening eaves of Greenwood the Great.

In the south the Corsairs of Umbar and the Tribes of Harad are regrouping, sensing weakness on their northern borders. And from the East the wains keep coming...

    Announcement

The Fourth Age Total War Team is very proud to officially announce the development of the Wainriders sub mod for FATW: The Dominion of Men. Wainriders is being built largely on the foundations established by the Dominion of Men but will be a stand alone expansion running on Alexander Total War. It will feature fully overhauled factions, an updated campaign map, and new mechanics and gameplay systems all designed to effectively transport the setting of the main campaign to T.A. 1864 as well as it can be realised in Rome Total War.

Further details will be released in later announcements. For now, though there is much work yet to do, several factions have already been finished, and we will begin to preview these rosters over the coming months. Today we are very proud to share with you the units of The Western Horde, the vanguard of the Wainriders' advance west, the architects of the conquest of Rhovanion and the victory over Gondor at the Battle of the Plains, and one of two Wainriders factions in the mod. Enjoy!

    The Western Horde

Few among the tribes know what, precisely, compelled their chieftains to strike into the west – not only with an army, but with livestock, goods, families. For some it is enough that they fight the people of Gondor, the tall and terrible Men of the West who punished the chieftains of their ancestors and destroyed their camps.

But since the time of the great sickness, the men of the East have grown strong. Now scarcely a year has passed since the Battle of the Plain, in which the army of Gondor was defeated and its king slain south of the dark, frowning forest that fringes the new land of the Western Horde. In that stroke, the fate of Rhovanion was sealed: its proud people, once allies of Gondor, now serve as thralls to the horde, or march in its hosts.

This new land is home for now, but the people are restless. While some chieftains are content to lord over the subdued Northmen of Rhovanion, others wish to pursue those who escaped to the north or into the west. And surely the folk of Gondor will want vengeance for the death of their king. Many in the horde yearn to seize the initiative that has recently been won, and set up camps across the Great River, to surround the fabled White City with fire and war.

    Tier 1

    Steppe Axes
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The nomadic folk of the East are ever ready for war; each man may be, in turn, a herder, a raider, or a warrior in a great chieftain’s host. But not every man can enjoy the prestige of fighting from a chariot, or afford to ride a horse into battle. Steppe Axes are the rough-and-ready fighters of the tribes, eager to seize spoils of war and earn honour under a successful leader. But while their ferocity can carry the day against ill-trained foes, their lack of discipline and poor gear make them unlikely to stand for long in a fight with superior soldiers.

    Tribute Huntsmen
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Young men from the subjugated peoples of Rhovanion who have been gathered under the leadership of the Western Horde, these wary fighters are skilled with the throwing spear. They have been sent by their villages and families as a form of tribute to their Easterling masters, under whom they may screen a line of battle or deploy in ambush in the terrain they know so well. Though some of these men go to war willingly enough, others resent their servitude, and a war-leader would do well not to trust too much to their morale in heavy fighting.

    Tier 2

    Tribute Spears
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These hardy spearmen are of Northman stock, and serve in the hosts of the Western Horde after the latter’s invasion and subjugation of Rhovanion. While they do not share the ferocity and aggressiveness of their new Easterling rulers, Tribute Spears are strong and disciplined enough to hold a battle-line while the riders and chariots outflank and run down their foes – provided they are well protected from threats themselves.

    Steppe Lancers
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Swift, light riders armed with spear and shield, Steppe Lancers are often in the van of any migration or assault of the Wainriders. Their speed makes them well suited for raids or flanking manoeuvres – or for chasing down fleeing foes. They are an essential arm of the Easterling hosts, supporting the chariot-borne chieftains and other warriors, although being made up mostly of men from poorer tribes they are not sufficiently armed for melee against a disciplined foe. If their headlong charge does not break the enemy, they are best withdrawn from the fight to charge elsewhere, lest they falter and flee themselves.

    Tier 3

    Easterling Warriors
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Away from their mounts, these Easterling Warriors are equipped in similar manner to the Horse Archers. Their primary weapon is a strong bow of horn, wood, and sinew. When overtaken or charging an enemy, they wield the narrow-bladed axe that is widespread among their people. While fighting from horseback or chariot is more prestigious, these folk of the Western Horde have adapted somewhat to their new life in the camps and villages of Rhovanion, and go into battle on foot, where they serve as a reliable and versatile arm of their host.

    Easterling Horse Archers
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In the wide lands of the East, a horse allows a man to herd his livestock and travel great distances efficiently; a bow allows him to strike down threats from afar. It is no surprise, then, that when called to war, or on their great migrations into the West, many of the Easterlings fight as either riders or bowmen – or both. Easterling Horse Archers can inflict terrible loss upon lightly-armed foes, thinning their ranks with arrow fire and cutting down the rest with axes. Against the well-armoured forces of Gondor, their best stratagem is to harass and distract, wearing down the enemy’s resolve until stronger fighters can deliver a killing blow.

    Wainrider Chariots
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These sons of chieftains and noble warriors cut an imposing figure on the battlefield, with their pointed helms glinting in the sun and their banners whipping in the wind of the charge. Their chariots are lighter and more easily handled than the larger war wains, pulled by a team of two horses who have been bred and trained for this single purpose. Armed with long-hafted axes, the warriors can sweep alongside enemy infantry formations, cutting down foes and withdrawing before becoming surrounded – or they may charge enemy cavalry, against which their chariots’ wicked scythe-blades can inflict terrible wounds. These chariot-warriors are reckless glory-seekers, and a war-chief who commands them must choose either to loose them in a ferocious initial charge, or hold them back as a reserve for a critical moment.

    Tier 4

    Sworn Spears
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Not all the Northmen caught up in the Western Horde serve unwillingly. Whether out of a desire for plunder or to prove their prowess in battle, some men were quick to declare their allegiance to the new masters from the East. Sworn Spears are among the most dependable of the Northmen in the Horde, more skilled and better-armed than the tribute-warriors drawn from the wreckage of Rhovanion’s princedoms. Wielding stout spear and shield and bearing a clutch of javelins, they can be trusted to hold a battle-line and earn their chieftain’s trust.

    War Wains
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These fearsome wains bear some of the mightiest champions of the Western Horde. Built of stout wood and iron, and pulled by a team of four strong horses, they are fixed with scythe blades and spikes to ruin enemy formations. Each wain carries a driver and three spear-throwers clad in formidable scale armour and bearing large shields. While they are slower and less manoeuvrable than the lighter Wainrider chariots, War Wains are more resilient – small, mobile forts that can rain heavy spears from a distance and follow up with a punishing charge. Like all such vehicles, War Wains are vulnerable when at rest, as enemy infantry can surround them and dispatch the crew or horses. But in open terrain, and supported by other troops, these can be a devastating weapon.

    Tier 5

    Wainrider Chieftains
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These are the lesser chieftains and tribal leaders among the Wainriders, along with their picked men and guards, fighting on foot either due to the haste of their mustering or because the terrain of their campaign may not be suitable for the War Wains. Even away from their fearsome chariots these men are formidable warriors, throwing deadly spears before closing to melee with axe and shield. As they have much to lose in defeat and much to gain in victory, Wainrider Chieftains are less likely to flee than other Easterling fighters, and will serve as some of the toughest infantry available to the Wainriders.

    Noble Guard (Bodyguard Unit)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Finding that the rugged terrain of Rhovanion was sometimes poorly suited for chariot warfare, the leaders of the Western Horde have become accustomed to riding into battle on horseback. These men fight in a manner similar to the Chosen of Great Rhun, armed with a powerful bow and a long spear, and their armour and fighting skill is almost unmatched among the other warriors of the Horde. These are the bold and cunning war-leaders who have wrested the lands of Rhovanion from the Northmen, and their swift victories have even earned the grudging admiration of some of those subjugated peoples who fight now under their banners.

    Special Units

    Sworn Champions
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These are the mightiest of the Northmen who serve under the Western Horde, tall men of broad shoulder and impressive build, champions among their people and in the eyes of their Easterling overlords. Whether eager or at first unwilling, they have sworn oaths that bind them to their new masters, and now will fight relentlessly to honour those words. Lavished with the best war-gear and richly rewarded for their deeds in battle, the Sworn Champions are towers of strength in the ranks of the Horde.

    Vassal Lancers
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Skilled riders though they are, the Easterlings tend to field lightly armoured cavalry who prefer to either shoot down their foes from afar or surprise their enemy with a sudden charge. Vassal Lancers are levied from the Northmen families and tribes that have been swept up by the Western Horde, and provide a strong arm of riders trained and equipped to fight in a prolonged melee. They are expert horsemen, armed with spear, shield, and sword, who can follow up a powerful charge with heavy strokes with their blades, whose skill at fighting from horseback has earned the respect of the leaders of the Horde.

Well, it's being built on FATW because that is our mod and we're quite fond of it, including the bits that are not era specific. We don't have another one to build it on...

    Gondor

    The King is dead.
To men of Gondor, the Kin-strife and the Great Plague seem but precursors to this great evil: the uprising in the wild East of the Wainriders, who in the space of a few years have shattered the bulwark of Rhovanion and scattered or enslaved its people. Hoping to halt their relentless advance, King Narmacil II met them in a great battle beyond Anduin, but he was killed and his army defeated.
Not since the death of Minardil at the hands of Corsairs two and a half centuries ago was a King of Gondor slain by a foe. While the new king, Calimehtar, orders the defences of the north, withdrawing the frontiers of the realm to the Anduin and the Emyn Muil, he plans for the counter-stroke against the invaders.
But his eye cannot look only to the East. Umbar, the most southerly haven loyal to the crown, has only recently been recaptured from the rebels that had made it their chief stronghold; Corsairs and renegades remain to trouble the coasts and South Gondor, while farther inland men of the Harad grow strong. North across the Ered Nimrais, hereditary chieftains guard the approach to western Calenardhon at Angrenost, supported by folk native to the mountains and hills. Far from the heartland of Gondor, these men protect the realm from threats further to the north. If they should fail, or prove false, Calimehtar may face danger on all sides.
Across Middle-earth, threats new and old arise to trouble the heirs of Numenor and their allies. Men in the South-kingdom fear that the days of Gondor’s glory are in the past. But some see in this new king bright promise, a sternness of character and a clarity of sight that may yet stave off the darkness.

    Tier 1

    Gondor Militia
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Although they are militia, these young men are familiar with the spears and shields they wield through a basic training that exceeds that of other kingdoms. They are mainly employed as garrison troops and a policing force, and are only called upon in great need for service upon the battlefield. Their large shields offer much protection and they can use their spears to keep the enemy at bay long enough for better trained allies to come to their aid. Without these allies, however, they may find themselves quickly overwhelmed if they take on too much despite their superior militia status.

    Tier 2

    Swordsmen of Gondor
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These men wield their swords single-handed with a stout shield in the off hand, lending them confidence in both attack and defence. Over mail hauberks they proudly display the emblem of Gondor: a white tree flowing upon a sable field beneath seven glittering stars. These swordsmen are the epitome of Dúnedanic discipline and will hold their ranks to the last hope, only running when all seems lost. Gondor has been famed for its infantry for many centuries and it will come as no surprise that the Swords of Gondor will outmatch their counterparts in enemy armies most of the time.

    Bowmen of Gondor
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Bowmen of Gondor are well trained and efficient, as all soldiers from that land, and they have quality enough in their shortbows. But, while they are useful in sowing panic amongst an approaching enemy, their bows cannot deliver an armour-piercing punch and will not be of great effect when faced with a heavily armoured foe. These archers wear only linen and a small cap to allow a full range of movement, which leaves them vulnerable in melee fighting.

    Tier 3

    Spearmen of Gondor
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Although Gondor is perhaps better known for its swordsmen, these men provide the defensive capabilities that swordsmen cannot. Like all of the Kingdom's troops they are well trained and armoured in high quality mail, making them tough opponents for any attacking force, especially cavalry. The spearmen are often veterans of many battles, who are the most trusted to hold any battle line: very rarely do they betray this trust. They are, however, not given to attacking as their spears and large shields are unwieldy at a run.

    Longbowmen of Gondor
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Since the Second Age, the descendants of Númenor have had a proud tradition of bowmanship. Although the bows they now use in the Third Age are no longer of tubular steel as they were in the Second, they still possess great accuracy and power. These archers are well disciplined, and they carry a plentiful supply of arrows into combat - which makes them perfect for thinning and confusing enemy ranks. They also have the skill to use fire, and use it well. These troops can cause fear and devastation in an enemy unit before they ever get close enough to be a threat. Although a shade of their former glory, the King's Longbowmen remain some of the best in Middle-earth, bar of course the Elves, and though not superior in close combat they are better equipped and armoured than their counterparts in other Mannish cultures.

    Rhovanion Scouts
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

With the loss of their homeland to the Wainriders, many lordless men of Rhovanion have made their way into the service of the King of Gondor, who was quick to adopt them into his armies as skilled light cavalry. Unlike most of the soldiery of Gondor, Rhovanion Scouts are fast and nimble riders, often operating far ahead of the main host or on its flanks, where they can hurl javelins at a slower foe while remaining out of reach. While their armour is of necessity light and flexible, their skill with spear and shield may allow them to defeat similarly lightly-armed foes.

    Tier 4

    Men at Arms
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Men at Arms are the standard superior unit in most of the armies of the Gondor, and they reflect well the values of their commanders. They are highly disciplined and enjoy the benefit of armour and weapons forged in the advanced smithies of Gondor, making them more the equivalent of some elites among other peoples. Their tall shields give them an advantage while defending, although they are equally proficient at using their swords in attack. Men at Arms wear the traditional winged helm and surcoat of Gondor, and continue its legacy of bravery and skill on the battlefield. Their status as part of the king's mighty army is well respected - such men have honour in the land.

    Rhovanion Princes
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

For centuries have the golden-haired Northmen served in the armies of the King. Hailing from a far, strange country on the fringes of the great forest in the North, the ancestors of these men swore allegiance to the Kings of Gondor, joined in its wars, and guarded its borders. Since the days of Eldacar, proud Northmen and their steeds have settled in Gondor itself, where their valour and loyalty have been welcome. Now, with the sudden defeat and enslavement of the people of Rhovanion, even more of their kinsmen have sought homes here, not a few of high birth among their folk. These Princes of Rhovanion serve as a mighty cavalry arm of the King, wielding bitter lances from atop mounts that are unmatched in Gondor. They fight fiercely against the enemies of their lord, and few foes can withstand their thundering charge.

    City Ballistas
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

There are few peoples in Middle-earth with technology advanced enough to create such a devastating war machine as the ballistas of Gondor. These weapons utilise the elasticity of animal sinew, cured over a period of many months, to shoot a huge bolt over hundreds of feet on the battlefield. They are crewed by a team of some of the strongest men in the Kingdom, and it requires all of their power to operate the machine; two men are needed to pull each of the pair of cranks, as well as one for loading the bolts into the ballista itself. Therein lies the weakness of the magnificent machine, however. For all its ingenuity, it needs men to work it.

    Tier 5

    Guards of the Citadel
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

For many years now have the Guards of the Citadel watched over the highest level of Minas Anor, where resides the King of Gondor. Their domain is the fair court in which the White Tree of Gondor grows, and they leave their posts only at the direst need or at their king's behest. Their arms and armour reflect their status as the true elites of Gondor; they wear helms of the finest steel set with wings of seabird's feathers and wield long bladed spears that stand twice their own height. A black-robed Guard commands respect not only in Minas Anor, but throughout the Kingdom, for they are the finest soldiers in all Gondor.

    Citadel Catapults
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

These mighty contrivances hurl great boulders over many hundreds of feet, sowing destruction and panic amongst even the most disciplined of armies. Although primarily used in felling the walls of besieged cities, adaptable Dúnedanic commanders have found use for them on the battlefield. Noting the devastation caused by flaming arrows, they devised the fire pots that can be thrown by their war machines - pots of clay filled with oil with a flaming rag thrust into them which explode in a shower of flames upon impact, destroying masses of tightly packed troops.

    Knights of Gondor (bodyguard unit)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The bodyguard of the King and the nobility of Gondor, these knights fight on foot with sword and shield. Equally suited to defending a point in the battle line or attacking an enemy’s position, the Knights of Gondor are only truly vulnerable to charges by cavalry or wains – and if drawn up in a strong defensive formation, they may hold out against even these threats. They are the staunchest defenders of the kingdom, visibly announcing the presence of a noble captain with their heavy armour and tall, winged helms.

    Special Units

    River-wardens
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Never heavily settled, the open lands of Calenardhon were devastated by the Great Plague, and in the ensuing centuries the Kings of Gondor found their attention drawn to other borders of the realm. Now, with the emergence of a powerful enemy from the East, the Great River seems likely to become the frontier of an uncertain war. River-wardens are some of the few troops of Gondorian descent who man the Anduin’s banks and crossings. They go garbed as hunters rather than knights, for the King’s forces in this part of the realm have never been sufficient for bold strokes of open war. Through stealth and ambush, and carefully marshalled strikes against the foe, they hope to hold the river in the name of the King.

    Mariners
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Númenóreans have a long and proud history of sea-faring, and it continues into the Third Age with the Mariners of Gondor. These are a sea-borne infantry unit, some of Gondor's most distinctive soldiers, for a life aboard ship does not lend itself to the weak. For boarding actions they carry a pair of heavy javelins. For closer work they bear a sword of Númenórean design, the eket, a short and broad blade used in a manner that fits the small confined spaces upon the decks of ships. A versatile weapon, it can be used for both stabbing and slashing and in combination with a small shield of wood it is highly effective. While their gear is specially suited to fighting at sea, these hardy men will give a good account of themselves wherever they are called to battle.

    Guards of the Haven
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The great Haven of Umbar was one of the most powerful and prominent strongholds of the Númenóreans in the Second Age. Its defensible location made it mighty; its position as a trade port brought it wealth. Far enough from Gondor to house exiles from that kingdom, and yet near enough to threaten its coasts, Umbar has ever been irresistible to Dúnedanic kings or lords wishing to bring it under their power. But once captured, such a prize needs strong wardens. The Guards of the Haven stand watch over the walls and palaces of the city and fortress, wielding spear and bow in its defense. Some of the finest soldiers in the realm, they know they are entrusted with securing a vital stronghold far from aid and often the target of Haradrian covetousness. Any captain will be thankful for the vigilance of these tireless men, whether they are securing the city walls or supporting a host in the field.

    Swan Knights of Belfalas
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The blood of Númenor runs strong in the noble houses of Belfalas, and is said to be enriched by a distant Elven ancestor. The lords of the castle-port of Belfalas are held as great among the Dúnedain, for they have much purer blood than elsewhere Gondor. For this reason they form one of the finest units in the Dúnedanic armies, a rare elite cavalry force of the Kingdom. They fight on grey steeds draped in proud blue barding, and they themselves wear an awe-inspiring array of mail armour. They arm themselves with long spears, fine blades, and a shield emblazoned with their emblems - the Swan and Ship of Belfalas and the White Tree.

Disclaimer: All rosters are a work in progress and unit list may not be complete or finalised; appearance and description may change in the final release.

You might well expect the Gondor roster to be very similar to that of the Reunited Kingdom in Dominion of Men (the southern part, anyway) and as you can see a lot of the units are taken from that source. However there are some additions and omissions that may surprise you. It's actually been a lot of fun imagining this particular version of Gondor, which is still ruled by the heirs of Anarion. More than 1000 years of struggle and reorganization under the Stewards has yet to take place before the events of the War of the Ring come to pass so what we hope to represent here then is a stronger, more cohesive, more confident, more hopeful Kingdom, albeit one that has just suffered a terrible setback.

Count and I regularly go over all the source material for this period and generally discuss every last detail of what goes into each faction, so if you have any questions about the omissions, changes, and inclusions for the units of Gondor circa T.A. 1864 post them below and I'm sure we will have some interesting answers for you!

Definitely there will be some changes to all of those things. We have quite a few ideas for how to make the campaign as accurate as possible to the time period, but it is a bit early to talk details of that yet. Need to get the large task of unit design mostly out of the way first

I did always enjoy factions with infantry bodyguards; feels like more of a challenge, and gives the army that slow moving battle line feel that is appropriate to so many factions.

Likewise! That was one of the first changes we made for Gondor, not least because there's more than one Gondorian royal in this time period who dies because their position was overrun by wains and cavalry - strongly implies their tradition was to fight on foot.

Here is a short video that pits some units from the above factions against each other - enjoy!

Wow, this looks fantastic! I can't wait to see the Avari and Arthedain and Dunland and Angmar.

Seriously, if this is even a small taste, I bet they'll look amazing.

    Thanks Widowmaker!

I have been really enjoying the process of putting whole rosters together (as opposed to a lot of my DoM work which was mostly a unit or two here and there) so I'm pretty confident that the best is yet to come.
