Wales is facing dire decisions. The war in the island brings comfort to no one on the island whether involved or not. Old days are recalled, people who gave their blood for Wales, now demanding blood. Its the destiny of this island. The war. Inevitable unless there is only one power left. We have sent our diplomats, asked for the bloodshed to end. And if it does not, God shall be with us in the fields of war.

In an underground dungeon, in Perth...
    ------------------

"In Memoriam, I shall follow the path,
In Memoriam, I shall track the trail,
In Memoriam, I shall keep the wrath,
In Memoriam I shall make him frail,

    In Memoriam, Farquar."

The new assassins' guilds apprentices have sworn for revenge as they leave the underground to seek the underworld.
    ------------------

    At Carlisle, under siege...
    -----------------------

"English banners, it's the royal navy! The king's army is here, we are saved!!"
The English garrison in Carlisle was jubilant as they saw the huge Royal Navy approach the docks.

Indeed, English ships vastly outnumbering their Scottish counterparts, attacked them with such violence that not one Scottish ship remained afloat.
It was a total victory at sea.
At the sight of this triumph, the English garrison ran to take up arms and assist the king who was expected to land with his army to lift the siege.

But to their horror, the ships remained at large. Not a single solider disembarked.

    Lewes had not come.

When Alexander saw what happened, he ordered the assault immediately.
Carlisle fell without much resistance and the Scottish were welcomed as liberators.

The people of Carlisle, holding grudge against the Barons for surrendering the city to the Crown, and heartened by the way the Scotsmen treated them, were very favourable to Alexander who led the attack himself, getting injured in the process.

"Those scars, those are the price of freedom from the tyranny of the Crown and the incompetence of the Barons.
Today, you are a free folk, you are part of Scotland the Brave!"

Alexander gave his speech under the hurrahs of the people gathered to witness the cross of Saint Andrews fly over the townhall...overlooking the bay full with English ships.

    ----

On the eastern coast, the Scottish royal navy intercepted a scouting English patrol and was swiftly dealt with.

It was the summer of 1322 AD , and the northern shire people were up in arms , that something should be done about the scottish invasion , and ambassadors messages arrived and were sent back and forth between the parties.Scotland asked for the men of the northern shires to bow down to the invaders ,asking them to embrace them as their liege lord much to the disturbance of the people of the north, who had thrown off shackles of one king , not to bow to another.

In reponce , Henry drafted a letter to the Scottish king , and likewise determined a new path of diplomacy talking to the irish and welsh asking them to intercede remembering the deeds of the Shires in the south, whilst the scots fought in the north for their own expansion but , so far their had been little responce, as both factions , ambassadors traveled northwards to the Scottish army camp which laid in the province of Carlisle. To the protector of England , he advised he move to defend York , being that this was perhaps the more important city of the northern shires, being capital , and perhaps the main trade hub of all england in its size and scope and fearing the english could not both defend either Lancaster or Newcastle , and thus taking the middle ground to react from there....

Henry grimaced as he heard the news from his spies of the atrocities of the barbaric scotsmen in the city of Carlisle , for most of them were unused to the civilization of the south , and the mercantile demeanor of the northern shires populace. Most of the highland folk relied on exchange and bartering but the men of the south would'nt take the scottish coin , as it was worthless to them , in dealing with the markets of the south, and this caused some friction in the streets and in the markets , as arguments arose, and the scottish who had stripped the english populance of all weapons brought their own form of justice , bearing all the hatred of the past.

Henry screwed up the reports of suffering , and additional reports of the attack of the city and the dead, and threw the reports into the openfire , his temper being raised , that as yet he could nothing as the military inbalance was overwhelmingly in the scottish favour , his troops weakened from the plague , and rebuilding efforts , of the disorder that had followed the plague,.... he stared out of the window , as he could hear the troops marshaling in the yard below, and knew that he and his troops would return to the north , given enough time....

    --------------------

The noble Paul Cornwall disgusted with the leadership of Newcastle , as it reduced its garrison numbers in the face of scottish aggression , plotted with others still loyal to the northern shires leadership , and came to a rough plan of action , wanting to help the war effort on the side of the northern shires but knew its main garrison was only loyal to the lord of Newcastle. Paul was a slight scholarly figure , not the usual massively framed man , as he had been poor of health in his youth , and his father seeing the slight man , sent him to the church to learn their crafts rather than those of the knightly code of the noble house, but he had been called back , after his father and brother had been killed , volunteering to help the northern shires main northern army despite the calls of the lord of newcastle.

Thus he spent a few weeks with the company commanders of the cannon companies that have traveled from York to protect Newcastle. Plied with drink , gifts and good food , the young noble, with a few of his noble friends slowly won over the men and captains of this group , and until disgruntled they were ready for somesort of action.

Bribed guards at the gates of Newcastle allowed the carts and wagons which departed that night without issue, the clink of coins in their pockets buying their silence , as the two companies of Cannon departed that night escorted by Paul and his young friends and companions as they rode south hoping to bring the cannon back to the founders back at York to at least make some use of them , rather than sitting idle , within Newcastle.

    ---------------------

Waylander watched the new border, as yet another scottish spy entered the grounds of the northern shires provinces, obviously set south on the way to York , to plan out the next stage in the scottish invasion and drew back the strings of his twin crossbow as he sat in the tree that straddled the main route that lead to that grand city. Well hidden from the foliage of the trees, that swayed in the stiff breeze . The rustling sounds of the leaves were interrupted by the sounds of the scottish agent as he traveled by the tree, in which waylander waited. Indeed he waited until the figure had past and presented the clear outline of his wide back , when the crossbow fired , and the scottish agent , fell, front forwards , and lay dying with two bolts in his back.

Waylander jumped down from the tree, moved to check the wounds , noting they were mortal before pushing a note onto the one of the bolts which read...

Such is the fate of any scottish agents , that transgress into Northern shires terrority ....
and waylander welcomes any to dine in hell , to sit with Josias...

    Waylander the slayer

Waylander took one look at the still twitching body , his padded shoes making light sounds as he moved, as the scottish agent weakly called for help responding to the movement behind him, before the assassin strode away onto the nearby road, moving back to York , for he had some gifts for some in York , to bring them joy , in vengeance for those that they had lost..

Yeah i know but for political expediency there are always civilians killed in a siege no matter how careful a army is ....and you have already killed northern shires troops and families within the forts , so we bundle it up together, for saying "we didnt kill innocent civilians" after you killed and ravaged your way over the border, makes little difference in how nice you are to the civilians of Carlisle you now rule [winks & grins]

Surprised. If there is one thing I've learned it's that they're always surprised, whether it was a slit to the throat, a bolt in the back or a poisoned cup of wine, they were always surprised. You would think the nobles of Scotland would have learned to fear for their lives, especially near the border. Well maybe not fear for their lives but at least be a little bit wary. Then again, even for the most paranoid and prepared individual death would still come as a surprise. The Master had always been paramount on the fact that his operatives knew that every day could be your last, not to frighten us but rather to instil the opposite. An assassin who feared nothing, not even death would go to the ends of the world and back to defeat his adversary.

“As a dealer in death you should be prepared to be taken by your own trade.” he had told us in one of his many lectures. His words were all too true, they always were. That's why he had been the Master. Many of my colleagues had found their end in a, let's say, unnatural way, no matter their skill. I did not fear to die, with no friends nor a family, having no other skill, no other purpose in life but to kill those pointed to me, I was essentially already dead. This was the life of any operative who survived the harsh training and those were few indeed. And yet sometimes I wondered what my life would've been if I had become a baker or a thatcher, like my father had been. A lot less bloody and a lot more boring I always concluded.

I felt a sticky goo attaching itself to my boots. I looked down and saw the dead body of the Scottish nobleman leaking his lifewater onto the floor. In my carelessness I had allowed myself to be caught lost in thought after the deed had been done. I silently cursed myself as I left the chamber. I had been lucky not to get caught. The castle was not well defended this far from the front but still, a couple of armoured Scotsmen would do just fine ending my life right there on the spot. I made my way out as easy as my way in and soon I was riding to my safe place in the countryside where I would chastice myself for my negligence.

“To become careless is to open the door to death!” another of the Master's teachings.

“Discipline is life; Carelessness is death!”

“I thought the war was in the north?” Rory said.

    “It is.” Sergeant replied.

“Then why are we marching eastward?” Rory asked.

“Who appointed you chief navigator?” Sergeant quipped back.

“Because we're told so that's why!” Sergeant shouted leaving no room to reply.

“I just don't get why we're marching towards York instead of Carlisle.” Rory muttered under his breath to himself.

“What was that?!” Sergeant roared, his evil little eyes narrowing in his stretched balloon of a face.

    “Nothing sergeant, nothing.”

Wales is continuing to stay neutral. But the war and politics are turning King Tegonwy mad. If only a sign, or a mistake of someone could help him to decide...

    At Carlisle...
    -------------------

    "He struck again..."
The cloaked man informed the King.

"I thought your men are on his tracks...but he keeps killing them..."
    Alexander was not amused.

"Sire..he did not kill one of mine, this...he...it's Gille!"
    The Master Assassin sighed...

"WHAT? Gille? How? It can't be. He is always on his guard...Curses!"
    Alexander was flabbergasted.

Gille was the one who ordered his men to retreat from the Castle nearby Newcastle, as a good gesture towards the Lord of the city.
He was one of those opposing the conflict with the Barons.
Yet the English killed him, like a dog, in his sleep.

Alexander was still screaming in rage when a scout came to report.
It seems Lewes has moved eastwards, towards York.

Alexander wants to press the attack against the English.
But the only way south is blocked by two forts manned by the armies of Shires.

Alexander was reluctant to attack the Barons as he was trying to work some kind of a ceasefire with them.
But the stubborn display of hostility from Lord Henry and the death of Gille was more than the King can tolerate.

"We will fight our way towards the English lands. Whoever is my way will yield or face the consequences."
Alexander gave his orders to assault the southern fort, blocking the way of the Scottish armies marching south towards Chester.

"But my King, it seems the Irish and the Welsh are playing dangerous mind games. I am unsure of their loyalty to the Celtic Alliance."
    The counsellor warned the King.

"Nonsense. Our Allies have young yet wise rulers. They know that we are fighting a common enemy"
    Alexander dismissed the reports.

"I don't doubt that, Sire, but in Ireland, some chieftains are seeing the expansion of our lands as a threat..."
The minister spoke with a low voice, contemplating the situation...

"A threat? To whom? To the English? Damn yes we are a threat. But to the Irish? What for? They have their island, they signed a peace with the English.
If they want more lands, they just can grab anything they want from the Crown. No one is standing in their way. Hell, I would love to see their banners next to mine as we march on London!"

Alexander was getting angry at the prospect of Irish warlords plotting from afar.

"They are sending an army to defend the Barons against...us!"
The minister read the letter from the Irish prince, warning the King of the intentions of his father.

"I don't believe these rumours." Alexander was in a hurry.
His scouts managed to sneak in the border castle at Lancaster.
    It's time to keep marching.

As for the Irish plans, he dismissed them as attempts by the Barons and English spies to sow dissent between the members of the Celtic Alliance.

[execellent RP from you Der Bose Wolf..sorry i could'nt rep it [alas!]

The scottish had had again moved swiftly assaulting and smashing the garrison at Kendal Castle , which stood at the linch point , between the north and the south , as now the open plains down to Lancaster was perhaps the last obstacle between the scottish and perhaps their most dreaded foe, the English crown , which the Scottish seemed bent on facing. But yet another castle , and northern shires englishmen , had been killed, in the line of other castles such as Hermitage , warkworth [nr Newcastle] which had been stormed.

Both the irish and welsh factions asked for peace , and yet again had tried to talk the scottish war effort down , but in this they had failed , for the scottish blood lust was up , and seeing their ancient enemy laid low, where fully motivated to make the best of the situation having fully mobilized their now united land, pushed away all barriers to their complete success.

Henry of Lancaster staying at his countryside estates saw the move, and knew that the next threat they would face would be Lancaster itself, and called for his horse to be prepared so that he could return to his home , with most of his assistants and nobles objecting to the move , saying he would be better protected at York where the english moved to reinforce.

But Henry would not be moved in this return to Lancaster, saying that he may have failed at many things , but he was still a man of Lancaster and would stand with his fellow lancasterians if their home was threatened, although he did make some compromise making sure his family with his sons , would be moved to the safety of York. As the scottish hordes began to assemble on the provinces of Lancaster's border, Henry murmured to himself ,

"We must break you or die in the attempt!" , he spat into the wind, as he turned his horse back to the safety of Lancaster's walls.

    ---------------------------

Waylander looked at what he knew was a scottish spy who was joining in a drinking game in the nearby tavern with some of locals , blending in , to the men of the northern shires with the various games of gambling ,and moved over to the table himself.

"Hey! hey hey! move over their a bit , and give us some room!" , he cried as he took a seat at the table, and volunteered his own money asking to try another event of what he called "fingers" . Most looked ignorant of this new game, and waylander explained , it required moving a dagger stabbing the table quickly between each finger, faster and faster for a few minutes showing the skill of speed and agility without losing or nicking a finger. Most of the people laughed at the idea of such a thing , and most [including the scottish spy] put down their money as waylander placed his hand on the table, and stood , bending a little over the table. faster and faster he moved the dagger stabbing around his fingers that pressed against the firm wooden table of the tavern, much to the jeers and cheers of those at the table until the dagger moves were a blur.

Suddenly he lunched forward sending the dagger forward into the scottish spies hand pinning it to the table as the man howled in pain and the other gamblers drew back in shock , some falling backward in their chairs, other's losing their mugs of beers as they fell , showering the area in the bitter liquid. But in a blur of motion , Waylander drew a shortsword thrusting into the still howling scottish spies heart as he was trying to free his hand. the other tavern people in shock , began to shuffle away some crawling on the wet floor of the beer stained tavern , giving the dark man , who withdrew his blade wiping it on a cloth , before he looked around , checking none would challenge him before he strode out of the rough joint.

"The people of the castle of Kendal send their regards", said waylander as he departed the tavern , his words perhaps lost to most , as the voices erupted as he left the building.

The tavern people where shocked as the tavern keeper sent a youngman to get the sheriffs down to investigate , as some of the tavern users departed and as the other tavern people started to go through the fallen persons clothing looking for more cash , until the tavern keeper shoo'ded them away.

    ---------------------

Henry sat writing what he perhaps would consider his last communications fearing that Lancaster would soon be under Scottish siege, but knew the leadership of the Northern shires was at Stake ,as the second person in political strength of the Council was perhaps Godwine of Newcastle , and he would'nt leave the Northern shires in such traitorous leadership , and gave the letter to his spymaster.

"Make sure you persuade some of the lords to promise Godwine a meeting outside Newcastle , and then do what needs to be done! Newcastle and the northern shires needs better leadership than this man", said Henry in the dark light of flickering candle.

The spymaster knelt as he received his masters command , receiving the letter with both hands, nodded and departed the room , leaving to York to formulate new plans on the behest of his leader.

    ----------------------

Back at Newcastle , a week later, Lord Godwine of Newcastle received a letter from Henry , requesting he travel south of Newcastle to meet at the castle to the south with just his bodyguard, to receive new orders from the northern shires. Godwine looked strangely at the note, knowing that he could'nt disobey the orders, from a direct request from the leader of the Council, for to not obey the request , would leave him open to attack from his rivals , and to accept would be risky..

"Double the training of the men !" , Godwine called , "Next season we make ready to bring the army of Newcastle , down to the south , ....and let us all be ready for what will be waiting for us!" , commanded Godwine , and all the guard commanders nodded and carried on with their day , knowing the next seasons could bring massive change to the north , in whatever plots the nobles of the northern shires prepared...

    ------------------------------------------------

In the far north , a flotilla of northern shires shipping returned from the west, having been blown by some heavy winds off course to the far distant island of greenland, where they repaired their ships , with the wood they found, repairing the damage inflicted from ships of the english navy from over five years ago. Returning of the coast of scotland who they assumed were allies from the last war, they were pelted with stone and driven from the coastline. It was only when later they captured a villager , and after inquiry found the war against the english crown had ended and indeed the scottish had attack the northern shires, they understood the change in politics had occurred in their long absence. The crew looked at their admiral for a sign of what to do , in this new environment , who shrugged and said....

"It seems the situation has changed my lads!....... Time to blockade this port in the far north, and grab what food we can and burn the rest!" , said the admiral much to the cheers of the rest of the crew , who hoped perhaps for some captured riches before they finally returned home...

    -------------------------------------

    Kendal Castle

[Kendal castle as it stands today]

Kendal Castle is a medieval fortification to the east of the town of Kendal, Cumbria, in northern England. The castle, which is atop a glacial drumlin, was built in the 12th century as the Caput baroniae for the Barony of Kendal. By the 15th century, the Parr family owned the castle. Queen Catherine Parr was once thought to have been born at the castle; however, modern research has shown that it was in great disrepair by the 16th century and she was most likely born in Blackfriars, London

The castle was built in the late 12th century as the home of the Lancaster family who were Barons of Kendal. The best-known family associated with the castle was the Parr family; including Queen Catherine Parr, the sixth wife of King Henry VIII of England. Her family had lived at Kendal since her ancestor Sir William Parr married the heiress of Kendal, Elizabeth Ros, during the reign of Edward III of England. By the time Catherine Parr was born, the family had long deserted the castle which was already falling into disrepair. Catherine's father preferred to live in the centre of court in London. Sir Thomas's father seems to be the last of the Parrs to have lived at Kendal Castle

The titles of Earl of Kendal and Duke of Kendal have been created several times, usually for people with some connection to the royal family.

The first creation was for John, 4th son of King Henry IV, who was created Earl of Kendal, Earl of Richmond and Duke of Bedford in 1414. The titles became extinct at his death.
The second creation was for John Beaufort, 3rd Earl of Somerset, a grandson of John of Gaunt, who was created Earl of Kendal and Duke of Somerset in 1443. He died the following year, when the titles became extinct.
The third creation was for Jean de Foix, vicomte de Castillon, who was created Earl of Kendal in 1446. He gave allegiance to the King of France in 1462, and is thereby presumed to have forfeited his English peerage. However, his descendants in France (and, later, in Spain) continued to use the title under the name 'Candale' (or 'Candal').

    [kendal castle from above]

The next Kendal creation was for Prince Rupert of the Rhine, nephew of King Charles I and a Royalist commander in the Civil War, who is sometimes (perhaps erroneously) said to have been created Baron Kendal along with the other titles of Earl of Holdernesse and Duke of Cumberland in 1644. This Kendal title, if it ever existed, became extinct on his death without legitimate issue.
The first use of Kendal as a ducal title was in 1666, when Charles Stuart, son of the Duke of York, was given the titles of Duke of Kendal, Earl of Wigmore and Baron Holdenby. He died the following year, when these titles became extinct. The next creation was for Prince George of Denmark, the husband of Princess (later Queen) Anne, who was created Duke of Cumberland, Earl of Kendal and Baron Wokingham in 1689. He died without surviving issue, and the titles became extinct.

{credit to becky forrest for her video on her youtube site]

The next creation was for Ehrengard von der Schulenberg, Duchess of Munster, the mistress of King George I, who was created Duchess of Kendal, Countess of Feversham and Baroness Glastonbury in 1719. These titles were for life only and expired with their first holder.
The last Kendal creation was for James Lowther, who was created Baron Kendal, Baron Burgh, Baron Lowther, Viscount Lowther, Viscount Lonsdale and Earl of Lonsdale in 1784. These titles became extinct at his death.
In 1816, at the time of the marriage of Princess Charlotte of Wales (daughter of the Prince Regent) to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, it was announced that the groom was to be created Duke of Kendal. However, in the end this never happened.

    Barony of Kendal

The Barony of Kendal is a subdivision of the English historic county of Westmorland. It is one of two ancient baronies that make up the county, the other being the Barony of Westmorland (also known as North Westmorland, or the Barony of Appleby). In 1974, the entire county became part of the modern county of Cumbria and ceased to have an administrative function. At the same time, Kendal borough along with some other rural and urban districts in Westmorland was merged with the neighbouring parts of Lancashire, Furness and Cartmel, and also the Sedbergh Rural District of the West Riding of Yorkshire into the new South Lakeland district of the new county.

The barony is the remnant of the feudal barony whose caput was at Kendal castle. The feudal barony had its own complex evolution, determined by the evolution of the families that owned it. For some purposes, it was therefore once considered to include parts of the Barony of Westmorland that were possessed by the original lords of Kendal, such as at least parts of the ancient parishes of Barton St Michael, and Morland.

In modern times, before it was scrapped, the barony came to be divided into two administrative wards, Kendal and Lonsdale, centred on the old church towns of Kendal (sometimes referred to historically as Kirkby Kendal), and Kirkby Lonsdale, which are respectively geographically centred on the valleys ("dales") of the rivers Kent and Lune.

Geographically, with the exception of its southern side, the Barony of Kendal is surrounded by mountainous terrain and water.

On the longest part of its northern boundary, it is separated from the Barony of Westmorland by the natural boundary of the Shap Fells, which are part of the Lake District's "Far Eastern Fells", being described by Alfred Wainwright as "the high link between the Pennines and Lakeland".
In its eastern corner, it borders on the ancient Yorkshire parish of Sedbergh, which is nestled in the Pennines, and now part of Cumbria.
To the south, the barony borders on the Lonsdale hundred of northern Lancashire, and it touches the sea in its southeast, in Morecambe Bay, where the River Kent enters.
To the west of Kendal, starting at the sea and going north, the barony borders first with the old Lancashire parish of Cartmell, and then with the eastern side of Windermere, which has the old Lancashire Furness Fells on the other side. (Both these old parts of Lancashire are now within Cumbria.)
And in its extreme northwest, the barony's parish of Grasmere stretched around the top of Furness, and reaches towards the heights around Scafell, and the Central Fells that separate the barony from the old county of Cumberland, (now also part of Cumbria). On its north, Grasmere also stretches into the Kirkstone Pass section of the Helvellyn range in the Eastern Fells, which in turn link to the Shap Fells described above.

Unlike many parts of Cumbria, the "Kentdale" area was already noted in the Domesday book. Much of Kendal parish was in the hands of a person called Gillemichael. Much of the Lonsdale area had been under control of a person called Torfin, but had then came into the king's hands. Other parts, including Beetham, were held by Earl Tostig, whose possessions later passed in some cases to the king, and in others to Roger of Poitou. The whole area was only later united as one unit under Kendal when it eventually came into the hands of Ivo de Taillebois.

    Farrer also wrote that:

The parishes of Windermere and Grasmere were "forest". Down to a comparatively recent period, there were no freeholds in these parishes except the Fleming estate in Rydal and Loughrigg, monastic land such as the Conishead Priory estate at Baisbrown, a small freehold estate in Little Langdale, and a freehold at Lickbarrow. Windermere water was a several fishery of the lords of Kentdale, and so it has always lain in Kentdale and the county of Westmorland.

There is some doubt about who should be named as the first true Baron of Kendal. It is generally associated with the family of William de Lancaster I, and before him, with his apparent relatives, the Norman, Ivo de Taillebois, and William's uncle, the Anglo-Saxon Ketel (or Chetell) son of Eldred of Workington. William de Lancaster I was in any case the first administrator of the region after England recovered the area from King David I of Scotland.

William is thought to be related to Ivo de Taillebois, who helped administer the Cumbrian region and formed Kendal into what would become the barony, under the first two Norman kings, William the Conqueror and William Rufus. Ketel fitz Eldred is known to have been lord over similar areas after the death of Ivo, and before the time when William took over. But between Ivo and William, a period which included Scottish occupation, the history of the Barony of Kendal is very unclear.

[The arms of Westmorland. In modern times, the two red bars were incorporated into the arms of the traditional county of Westmorland, as a representation of the Kendal half of that county. The apple tree represents Appleby, or Northern Westmorland.]

Two historical records claim a direct line of father-son descent from Ivo to Eldred to Ketel to Gilbert, which was the name of the father of William de Lancaster (also known as "William son of Gilbert"). These were records made much later in Cockersand Abbey and St Mary's Abbey in Yorkshire. But modern commentators believe this to be impossible, and made by placing a sequence of lords into the simplest possible family tree. Furthermore, records have been found which describe Ketel not as William's grandfather, but as his uncle (Latin avunculus, so probably a maternal uncle).

More contemporary is a record in the Coucher Book of Furness Abbey. Helewise, granddaughter and heir of William is a party, and it was asserted there that William de Lancaster I had first been known as William de Tailboys, before receiving the right to be called "Willelmum de Lancastre, Baronem de Kendale". This is the only relatively contemporary evidence that William had a Taillebois connection, probably through his father Gilbert, and it also suggests that during the 12th century, Kendal was associated somehow with the honour of Lancaster, because William was described as becoming Baron of one, and taking up the title from the other. William Farrer argued that such links go back before 1066. He argued that Kendal and the neighbouring parts of Lancashire, Furness to the west, and northern Lancashire to the south, formed a single administrative district in the old Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria.

Furness, Kendal, and North Lancashire, bounded on the north by the river Duddon, Dunmail Raise, Kirkstone Pass, and Borrow Beck, and on the south by the river Ribble, formed a complete fiscal area of five hundred teamlands for the levying of Danegeld.

So during the lifetime of William de Lancastre, the link between Kendal and Lancashire was by this account an older link, which was only broken later as the honour of Lancaster came under more direct royal control, and Furness came under the control of the powerful Abbey of Furness. Documents show that disputes concerning control of Furness continued between the Barons of Kendal and the Abbey of Furness for several generations.

Despite common assertions to the contrary, Farrer and Curwen thought that William was probably not a true "Baron" of Kendal, in the sense of being a direct tenant of the monarch, because he appears to have had lords above him apart from the king. Farrer wrote in the Introduction to Records of Kendal:

After a careful review of the evidence which has been sketched above, the author is of opinion that no barony or reputed barony of Kentdale existed prior to the grants of 1189–90; and that neither William de Lancaster, son of Gilbert, nor William de Lancaster II, his son and successor, can be rightly described as "baron" of Kentdale.

Instead, Farrer and Curwen believed that William I and II were actually tenants of the lord controlling northern Westmorland. Therefore, the eventual county of Westmorland was not originally a merger, but a takeover, which was then re-structured in the time of King Richard I of England. On 15 April 1190, Richard acquitted the then Baron of Kendal, Gilbert fitz Reinfrid, of his dues to northern Westmorland. It was only 13 years later, on 28 October 1203, that King John granted to Robert de Veteriponte in fee "Appleby and Brough [both in northern Westmorland] with all their appendages with the bailiwick and the rent of the county with the services of all tenants (not holding of the king by military service) to hold by the service of four knights." The service to the crown for Kendal was by comparison the service of two knights.

There was a second William de Lancaster, son of the first, who was either the next baron, or according to Farrer the first definite Baron of Kendal. And after him came the above-mentioned Gilbert son of Roger fitz Reinfrid, the husband of Helewise, who was the daughter and heiress of William de Lancastre II. Gilbert was one of the barons whose seal is found on the Magna Carta, and he participated in the so-called First Baron's War.

    England

I awoke in the middle of the night, troubled by something. Something had raised me from my slumber though I could not pinpoint what exactly it was, just an aura of tension. I recognized it as my instict telling me danger was ahead. My mind and body had been rigorously been trained to sense certain things even unconsciously and it had paid dividends multiple times in my life and soon, it seemed, again.

I maintained my steady breath and opened my eyes for but a sliver. It was a risk but without vision, even with only the moon and stars as lightsources, it would be difficult to get out of this alive. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first but while I waited a dark shadow of a man appeared at the stretches of the clearing I had made my residence. He too was accustomed to the countryside for he moved with grace across the woodland, making sure not to step on any crackling undergrowth. He drew his blade which flashed in reflection of the moonlight. Hours upon hours of training helped me remain my calm, avoiding the natural tensing of the body in response to danger. How many times had I done this now? Too many to count. He came so close I could feel his breath in my neck. I struck.

“Urgh.” came his muffled cry as I punched my knife into his abdomen, driving the air from his body. He dropped his weapon and sagged to his knees. Not wanting to be sloppy I immediatly withdrew my knife and slit my assaillant's throat. All in all the engagement had taken no more than 30 seconds. Not even in the slightest agitated I searched my adversary's body for anything special. After a short check I found nothing of importance but by his attire I could discern him as one of the Scottish agents. I dragged him towards a bush to hid the body.

“Better luck next time buddy.” I chuckled.

    Time to get moving.
