Default Osprey Illustrator Angus Mcbride (1931-2007)

I'm sticking this thread temporarily. Angus Mcbride is a pretty important guy to the TW community so please pay your respects here. ~ Mirage

Found the following on Ospreys website today :

"It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing away of Angus McBride, one of the world's most respected historical illustrators and a true friend of Osprey.

We are currently preparing a more fitting tribute to him and his work. Therefore, if you wish to add your thoughts please email:
tribute@ospreypublishing.com and we will do our best to publish a selection of them.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

Yeah, there's a thread for it in the VV. I also put it in my sig in honor of him.

Really sad, like I said in the VV he was one of the best military illustrators and one of my favorite illustrators in general.

This is really sad. Anybody who loves history knows we lost a very talented person that brought so much of the richness and diversity of the past alive in his amazingly detailed drawings. This is not off-topic at all as so much of our and other modders work is inspired by his art. Seldom do you ever get such a combo of historian and artist - we'll miss him a lot.

*Bump* I've stickied this thread temporarily.

Just so people have an idea of why he's important here's a list of his works:

PS: And please take some time to e-mail and offer your condolences at the e-mail CelticPagan mentioned above.

    Ummmm.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_McBride

Angus Mcbribe is the main illustrator for the "Osprey" series of books on military history. His artistic depictions of various historical ancient and medieval armies are the basis for a lot of units that have been done for TW games - especially ones involving medieval Europe and the Middle East.

No we did not know him in real life. His works are very much the basis for a lot of the units AD has done for Broken Crescent thus I thought its important to pay our respects.

Angus McBride probably influenced 90% of the mods made for Rome and now Medieval. Look in any mod thread and you'll find Angus McBride's art he completely brought the era to life with all the little details he included. The best part about his illustrations is they weren't static. It wasn't just a soldier showing off his armour in a statue-esque pose, he was stabbing somebody in the face in a fluid pose, still showing off the little details of his armour.

Just some out of many examples of his fine work:

He's done everything from Babylonians to Nazis. Three cheers for Angus McBride

Even though I don't own any Osprey books featuring McBride's works, I've always been impressed with the detail and authenticity that Osprey's illustrations held.

They were and still are the best historically-based illustrations I've seen or likely ever will see.

Angus McBride, you will be missed.

Yes he has now gone to join the warriors that were depicted in his drawings, I think that they will honour him greatly for giving them life in the imaginations of the living. He will be sadly missed.

A great loss indeed. A brilliant military artist. I owned more than 5 dozens of Osprey books for my military figurines hobby in the 80's & 90's and only those illustrated by Mr. Angus McBride were truely top notch. His name will forever be etched in history and his works will inspire many others to continue his legacy for the future even though there could only be one A.M.

Thinking about ordering a book or two from Osprey(specifically something about Scandinavia ), illustrated by him.

What I am so amazed about is the amount of books he has illustrated.

    RIP
