I assume you've downloaded the latest version of your video drivers? I don't have an ATI, so i'm not sure what the latest version is of theirs...so I would head over to ati.com and download the latest drivers as opposed to using the ones from Microsoft.

Don't we have spoiler tags or something to keep all that text in check?

Actuually this is kinda dissapointing as I have a slightly worse comp than you: Dual SLI 7800 GT OC'ed, 64 4000, 2gb ram latest drivers etc. and can almost run the game at highest settings with a solid fps. Shadows are what kill my peformance. I hoped with a little bit of upgrading - maybe to a 4200 or 4600 dual core - I could run at highest with huge settings and no problem

EDIT: I just noticed I misread your post: Dude the X1300 is a BUDGET card - if you're looking at running a game at recommended settings or higher stay well aware from budget cards. Your low-end card is bottlenecked what is otherwise a mid-to-high range system.

You think your 7600 is really netto? What chip does it run a Dorito?

I’ll bet your motherboard would melt if you tired to send a fax, where did you find your CPU, in a box of cracker jacks?

Depending on what you call recent, I'd say that it was grossly overpriced if it was less than half a year ago. Anyway, this should either be in M2TW: techical help or the basement.

Sorry to break it to you gr33k1mp777 but you have to get a new graphic card. Just browse around the American hardware sites, since they seem to have the best prices on hardware. I can only tell you that i have a 7950 gx2 with 1gb of memory and i still don't hit 60's with everything on(including realistic shadows) on a resolution of 1280x1024. It's kinda hard to hit perfect performance with everything on.

That really isnt true - the reason why it doesnt play M2TW on top settings is largely to do with M2TW not supporting dual cores - I have a similar computer as the one quoted (and at a similar cost). M2TW isnt going to run on top settings even with a Nvidia 8800 if the its only using 2.2ghz of processing power - its not enough.

I havent had time to test my computer on games which support dual core processing - but I know that my computer will be able to play them on high specs.

A word of warning when buying new graphics cards - they use up a hell of allot of power - the 8800 uses about 270 watts - in most cases u will need to buy a new and usually very expensive power pack. This isnt the only extra cost - think about the amount of extra electricity you (or your parents) are paying for - I would guess that upgrading to a 8800 would cost about £200 per year more than a x1500.

It depends - dual core doesn't equal dual core - atm, AMD is in serious trouble - I've used AMD's on my last 4 rigs, but this time, I switched to intel - look at the benchmarks - the conroes blow anything out of the water AMD has. Despite MTW2 only utilizing one core, I can run it just fine with all settings maxed on my core 2 duo 6600 and an 8800 GTS at 1920*1200...

Also, the 8800 GTS uses 110W at load - not even ATI's new monsters demand 270. A GTS isn't even technically capable of drawing more than 140W, because of its single PCIE connector.

Just to give you some background info, a computer can generally be summed up in just a few statistics:

Processor - What does the thinking. Pay attention to buzzwords like "dual core," "64 bit," etc. Different companies can have different standards - 2GHz from an Intel processor not necessairly the same as 2GHz from AMD.
Video Card - I'm no expert in the field, but this has to do with how graphics are created and displayed. This is your weak link in your computer.
RAM - Where short term data is stored. You have 2 GB, but the speed of RAM is important as well.
Hard Drive - Where all your data is stored. You have 2 drives - a main 233 GB drive, and a backup 5GB drive.
Optical Drives - DVD drives, CD drives, etc.
Motherboard - This is the central piece of your computer. Everything goes through here - power, information, this is what everything hooks up to. When buying your computer pre-made, you don't have to worry about this one.
Sound Cards - Allows you to have more advanced sound output - like surround sound.
Power Supply - Deals with the electrical needs of your computer. Again, if you are buying a computer premade this probably isn't an option to be worried about.
Case - What your computer goes in. The metal outside that does nothing but look cool.
Cooling - Keeps your computer the other kind of cool. The greatest danger to computers is heat - they get hot, and will destroy themselves if they can't keep themselves in a proper temperature. The vast majority of computers just use fans to keep air flowing through the computer, but some take it upon themselves to use water cooling. That's an entirely different subject.
Monitor - Your computer screen. A lot of people who aren't familiar with computers refer to their screens as their "computer," but this isn't as common with flat screen monitors.

    Some computer phrases:

Bottlenecked - A computer that has one or more parts that limit it's preformance. You could buy the best processor on the market, the best video card, the best almost everything, but if you have far too little RAM, you system will be slow. Your computer is only as fast as it's slowest part. When buying computers, you should buy parts that work well together. In your case, your video card is bottlenecking your computer when you try to play video games.

Buying and installing a new video card should be relatively simple and won't cost more than the above posted card. Newegg is a great place to buy computer hardware, they are very cheap. You can install the card yourself or go to someplace like Best Buy or Circuit City and they might install it for you. Make sure to research your card though - you would probably want to find a card that is DirectX 10 compatable, with DDR3 memory, and at least 256MB capacity.

Ask people here for a good video card, or check the stickied thread about buying a computer for good hints.

I have a similar problem with my computer - my processor is the weakness:

4200+ 64-Bit AMD (running on 64-bit vista which actually improved M2TW performance.
    1900XTX 512MB GDDR3
    2 GB 4200 PC2 DDR2 RAM
    450W OCZ Modstream PS
    250GB HDD...

I was just wondering what the "experts" out there set their Catalyst settings to for playing Medieval 2. Do you utilise the catalyst AA, and AF or do you set it to let the game choose the settings and simply alter M2TWs ingame settings. I would like to know also the recommended settings I should use for this level of setup.

I set the AF in Catalyst CP to 8x, since you can't select AF in most games. I leave the AA setting alone though, that changes depending on the game. For M2TW my X1950XT 256MB could run it at 2x AA, so your X1900XTX should be able to handle 2x AA too.

@gr33kp1mp777, that computer isn't built as a gaming computer, most premade computers aren't. They come with fast processors but completely ignore the graphics card, I guess to make it sound faster. Hopefully that's going to change with Vista.
