    Default Backbone of your army?

I wanted to ask you which unit you use as a backbone of your armies(the unit that you have the most of in the armies), if reforms have occurred at your campaign you could tell us which one you used in which era.

For me, still in Camillian era, my backbone are the Principes, because they are good to hold a line longer to allow my cavalry(mostly the general) to flank the enemy.

    Cheers.

The backbone of my Casse armies on the mainland are the veteran Botroas recruited in the British isles. They bear the brunt of the fighting until the Cwmyr or the chariots deliver the killing-blow. At this point they've gotten so experienced that they can probably take my "elite" Cwmyr apart very easily. My best Botroas unit actually thrashed a Gaesatea unit, although admittedly one that had already been tired out and subjected to slinger fire.

i use a balanced force of gallic merc cavalry, slingers, boatroas, and caledonian skirmishers.

    as rome:
    camillian standard army:
    1 equites consulari
    2 hastati
    2 princepes
    2 triarii
    2 roarii
    2 leves
    2 slingers
    2 equites
    2 pedites extraordinarii
2-4 mercenary units, preferrably archers, or heavy phalanx, or possibly cavalry

    specialist army(mercs and elite units):
    4 pedites extraordinarii
    4 samnicti hastati
    4 triarii
    2 merc archers
    2 merc cavalry(or equites extraordinarii)
    2 equites

in my rome campaign, after killing epirus, and taking over illyria, the hellenes attack me, 2 cities of mine rebel, and my legions are busy reequiping in roma. all i have in greece is a small contingent of samnicti and alot of mercenaries, all trying to hold 4 cities.

    casse:
    time of freemen:
    4 slingers
    4 boatroas
    4 gaeroas
    4 gallic mercenary cavalry
    2 caledonian mercs
    1 generals chariots.

In my KH campaign, I use only mercenary armies, as upkeep cost reduces my cities income more and more every year (this will eventually change of course). The backbone of my army are the Misthophoroi Phalangitai, with reinforced flanks of Celtic or hellenic units and cavalry for flanking.

    Pezhetairoi.

Pezhetairoi is the backbone of my army, but my Peltastai are very often the fists, feet, and even heart of my army.

There is not really a job they cannot be asked to do in a push, fast enough to catch skirmishers, strong enough to challenge various infantry, armoured and shielded enough to not get totally wiped out if asked to brace against cavalry, hoplites, phalangitai. Thraikio are absolutely lethal against most infantry, and when fighting alongside Theurophori they take the whole Peltastai aspect of battle to another level.

In the beginning of my carthaginian campaign its poeni citizen militia (don't now the strange name). Alltough I find them in the current version a lot less good becaus of the fact they can no longer use the phalanx.
There goes the human intellect: give them an inch, and they run a mile in the wrong direction.

polybian hastati principes and triarii on a 2:2:1 ratio....I find that principes are more then enough to deal with cavalry so I only have the triarii for the true heavies, such as the carth bodyguards (shiver, they killed off almost half the triarii with one charge, damn faction leader with his 100 man strong guard) I try to play with historical(ish) legions so i use all everything really as i find they all fit well into how i fight. Other then Rome classical hoplites all the way!!! I love the koinon and classical hoplites are the mainstay of the battle line since the iphikratous hoplitai never really grabbed m,e and i only use one unit of epilektoi as flankers with their swords because im poor lol
    Thanks

I'm playing as Casse and the backbone of my army are still the Lugoae. Since I can make and reinforce them almost anywhere in Gaul and thanks to their relatively good skill, they make nice infantry.
Anyone know how to make Kluddargos (Casse Sword Masters)? Well I haven't reached the army reforms yet. After that?

my qarthadastei army varies from region to region, in africa its hoplites and missile skirmishers, in italy it samnitii dudes, in iberia its these 5 merc slingers which have won me countless battles against insufferably stupid seige ai (whats that all the men at the gate dead? send in moar!).

my sabyn campaing would have been long lost without those archer/spearmen sabyn has. Its really to easy with a cheap archer unit, since i have already explained what i can do with only 5 slinger units.

My long term Seleukid campaign has led me into shipping composite armies long distances.
My 6 Sarrisa brigades are the main length/strength of my battle line, as they pin the enemies main force and stop him riggling to much, allowing for a less messy kill(it's kinder that way anyway) but it's my flank inf and Mtd arm that deliver the kill.

I have 3 main field armies like this below(they look pretty, and allow for excellent combined arms/tactical variation), but in my far eastern provinces my forces are mainly cheap pikes, archers and slingers - to cut costs!

    1 Gen
    1 Companion cav
    2 Kataphractoi cav
    1 Partian Horsearcher
    1 Kataphractoi Nellie
    6 Sarrisa brigades(3 medium, 3 silvershields)
    1 Thoratikai Agyraspidai
    1 Pherspidai(spelling? elite assault inf)
    2 Thoratikai
    2 Thracian Peltasts
    2 Syrian Archers

As Macedon, i had my pikemen in the center and theudoropoi(spelling?) in the flanks, the hellenic spearmen which can throw javelins. Also i made use of alot of thracians, they rock.

playing the greek, the phalanx-hoplitae are the backbone of my army. though battle is decided through the outcome of one of my flanks. if im not able to relief the phalanx of the center by dominating at least one flank, it's gonna be a tough massacre

I don't have much of a backbone to my armies. They are primarily ragtag affairs with whatever units I could bundle together. Generally I will have Thorakitae and some type of phalanx unit, whether hoplite or phalangite in nature. My cavalry arm tends to be rather weak, but I do try to bring along some ranged units.

The core section of my army is normally made up of phalanxes if I play as a Greek faction. If I play as the Romani then I tend to use a lot of principes.

the spartian bodyguard is good and flexible. but if your bodyguard consists of cavalry, you gain more experience mainly because of persuing rioting soldiers.

from 50 battles playing koinon hellonon, my poleis stretching from the greek peninsula to the balkan and asia minor, i won 49 or something and my generals are nearly all quite unexpierenced compared to other fraction-games. and i didnt force the generals to go to battle, i sended the most sophisticated, spartians mainly, hehe...
