    Default The pergamene confederation

I'm starting my first AAR on RS patch 10 with pergamum and intend to take control of all the islands in the east mediterranean before making a great land empire.

    playing on m/m

    House rules

    NEVER exterminate a greek city

    only command battles with generals

no cheating (i usually do with money)

The year is 280 bc and the faction heir Chrysippos sets his sights on the people of lesbos and leads an army to force them into being the first city to join the confederation

I would usually wait untill they surrender but that would be a bit boring so ill assault in 2 turns

So the time to assault the lesbians came

Chrysippos made his move at night

The generals crush the enemy phalanx

The hoplites take control of the city

Mytilene is occupied and welcomed into the confederation

tomorrows entry will be more well done than this because i was rushing this part a bit.

What I usually try to do with my campaigns with pergamum is capture the coastal provinces of anatolia and also southern greece (pelloponessis) and of course the surrounding islands. It makes for great trade income.

Hehe, if you want a challnge, slog it out with the Seleucids and Ptolemaics. Invading Greece would be extremely beneficial as well.

    The short macedonian war

Having absorbed mytilene, Chrysippos sends his brother Megadates to liberate the macedon held settlement of chalcis.

Megadates assembled the troops and met with High Admiral Diophantos who had brought a supplement of pergamene hoplites

Having laid seige to chalcis megadates also found that he had more company than expected with more macedonians and a contingent of greek city forces.

Learning from Chrysippos, Megadates chose to advance at night which meant that the macedonian reinforcements would have a surprise awaiting them in the morning

As night drew in the assault began

having breached the defenses in 3 points i decided to send in pike phalanx units to deal with their cavalry as the only enemy phalanx was in the square.

The enemy generals both charged my hoplites and nearly broke them until i moved in another unit and my general; resulting in the total destruction of them and their bodyguards.

After the fall of the generals the rest of the city soon followed

The kingdoms emissary arrived at thessalonica to try and broker peace with macedon.
Surprisingly macedon accepted it but a large city state army landed next to chalcis and if they dont leave megadates will have to force them

The greeks didnt leave and blockaded my port so megadates took action.

The city states didnt fair too well as i held them with my pike phalanx and crushed them with my hoplites

Megadates fled the field but his men carried the day

wow if I was his brother I'd execute the man. Back in those days a general NEVER fled the field. If I ever have a cowardly general or family member who escapes, I send them either on a one way boat trip or into an one-on one-thousand suicide charge into the enemy.

i kept megadates alive to maintain my family tree

when the family is bigger i wont tolerate cowardice

    Cretes most recent visitors

Having had greece declare war on me i decided they needed to pay for the men lost at chalcis

Timon was dispatched with his largely phalangite army to crete in order to liberate the island and take a naval base from the greek city alliance

Timon let the greeks starve for a year before they brought up reinforcements and forced a battle

Forced to fight Timon prepared his men for their bloody days work that lay ahead

    The cavalry begin to flank

The horsemen crash into the back of the native cretan hoplites killing many of our fellow hellenes

As i draw their phalangites in and encircle themthey still held firm and fought on till death

A sad day for crete as many of her brave men lie dead on their own soil and half of the island is now under pergamene control with the other indpendant half being eyed by timon as another member for the confederation

After the fall of crete the greeks and i reached a peace agreement and trade is flourishing

Does anyone feel i have too many screenshots ?

No, there's just enough. It might be nice if you added more text in between, but don't take away any screenshots. Relatively good AAR so far, well done.

Nope screenshots are good! Maybe try and get abit more of a story to it so we can read about the forming The pergamene confederation aswell as look at the screenshots.

Oh and try not to double post...not really sposed to do it. Unless maybe if your adding abig update to your AAR or something...otherwise use the "edit" button on your previous post an add abit to the bottom of it. Just you shouldnt have 2 or 3 posts in a row without reply if you can help it...just so you know

    The Rise of Adonibal

Having been the youngest of Attalos' sons Adonibal had spent most of his life in the capital with his father while his brothers and nephews were gaining glory in the various aegean conquests.

Adonibal felt the need to prove that he was worthy of his heritage and decided to seek the approval of the assembly for a campaign across the hellespont to conquer byzantium.

After much persuasion and a little theatening Adonibal was granted command of the capitals forces and sets out to byzantium.

Adonibal looked upon the great city of byzantium, the gateway to greece, and was overjoyed at the thought of controlling this grand city
The byzantines sallied forth to meet his army and to smite these diadochi who werent worthy of control of their homes.

The byzantines and Pergamenes clashed in a brutal melee as the men on both sides fought ferociously and stained the ground with the blood of their foes. Adonibal and his men were shocked by the courage of the enemy but fought on anyway

Using the flexible phalanx tactics of combining phalangites and traditional hoplites Adonibal overcame the mighty army of byzantium. Upon entering the city he did not recieve a warm welcome and took many slaves as warnings to those who harboured thoughts of rebellion.
but of course the real warning lay out in the fields of propontis where those who resisted the confederacy had fallen.

This is my first AAR so please feel free to criticise and tell me where to improve

That bit of extra text has helped alot to develop the story. Alot better now like that. Cant say what else could be improved. Just keep expanding the story as you go along. But good job got me thinking of starting an AAR of my own now

    Chrysippos and the assembly

Upon his conquest of mytilene Chrysippos spent the majority of his time there. Even the death of Attalos and his ascension to the throne didnt make him return to the capital.
Chrysippos had been thinking of changing the capital to the more defendable and well developing city of mytilene, the assembly, upon hearing of this promptly made all the moves they could to prevent this.
If the capital was moved against the will of the assembly this would show that they had very little power over the kings and generals. They hatched a plan to kill Chrysippos as a warning to those who tried to challenge pergamene tradition and how could the pergamene confederation not be ruled from pergamum this was seen by the assembly as madness.
A ruler they couldnt control was a ruler they had to remove.

Pyrrhus was a skilled assasin and was well known by many of the politicians as he dispatched many of their rivals to get them into office.
As he landed on lesbos with the task of regicide upon him he sharpened his kopis and headed for mytilene

Chrysippos was out hunting with his guards when pyrrhus found him. Pyrrhus observed him for 3 days waiting to see if he judged that this man deserved to die.
When the time to judge him came pyrrhus saw that he was an intelligent man who was worthy to succeed Atalos and that the assembly leaders had just been looking out for themselves and were scared of losing their wealth and power.
Pyrrhus aproached him and told him of his task set by the council. Luckily for Chrysippos he had long known that the assembly had been turned against him and his spies reported that they were in the pay of the greek cities. Pyrrhus was proof of this and this justified his next actions.

As thero and other leading politicians sat in the assembly chamber waiting to hear of the death of Chrysippos the last person they were expecting to walk in was the king himself. Sword drawn and in full battle dress he proceeded to slaughter the traitors and left the chamber as a bloodbath.
The white stone of the floor was no longer visible as blood covered the entire room and limbs were strewn all over the place.
The price of treachery was high under the Attalid dynasty of pergamum and the assembly never again tried to entirely control the kings again.
They still held reasonable power in the capital as Chrysippos returned to mytilene but used it for the benifit of the confederacy not their own personal wealth.

Go tell the Spartans stranger passing by, that here, many of their mighty hoplites lie.

With the greek city alliance becoming totally Athenian controlled it then became the Athenian League. With 2 powerfull city state naval empires in the aegean it was but a matter of time until a spark triggered all out war.
That spark would be provided by pergamum......

Tabnit and general Diores were given the daunting task of subjugating the mighty Spartans. Both were at first reluctant to do this as the Spartans no longer had an empire but their hoplites were still known as the bravest and most disciplined the world had known.
But they couldnt lose the chance to halt Athenian expansion in the pelponesus so set out with a hand picked army with 2 units of the pergamene finest with them.

They landed in laconia and trembled with excitement and fear for if they took sparta then Athens would have to fear a battle on her home shores instead of the islands of the aegean.

So Diores gave the command and the assault began. The spartans only had 2 units of their hoplites a general and 2 peltast units but taking the spartans would be enough of a challenge as it is.

The heroes of sparta await their doom calmly and embrace the chance of dying in battle.

The proud city burns as the pre assault bombardment takes effect.

    'Mornin lads!'

The struggle for the wall was brutal even against peltasts as my men came under a hail of javelins but when they got close the true power of the greek infantry was on display.

The men enter the square and kill the enemy general and many spartans.

The last Spartans fall to the pergamene finest.

After taking the city Tabnit and Diores view the carnage from the councillors chambers feeling both joy and sadness at the fall of sparta.
The confederacy now has a foothold on the peleponesus and is ready for any attack the Athenians may send.
