I see that on a billboard every time I take the bus from Manhattan to Brooklyn. What is it supposed to be?
I assumed it's some sort of advertisement for either Jesus or algorithms (or some sort of combination of the two) but want to clear this matter up.

I hate those stupid cryptic ad campaigns. Most of them are anti smoking campaigns, but this one mentions Jesus, so i would imagine it has something to do with somebody's Church.

Oh, its a (possibly apocryphal) story... Euler met Diderot, an atheist, on the behest of Catherine the Great, who had invited each to court but was alarmed at the influence Diderot's philosophy was having there; Euler simply said "e^iπ=1 .'. God exists - reply!" and Diderot's lack of understanding of maths being... lacking, he could not.

The point of it was as a nice and beautiful equation - why would those numbers fit so well if God didn't exist? Poor argument but there we are.

e pi and i are all unique and special numbers in math. e is defined as the lim as n->infinite of (1+1/n)^n or approximately 2.718. pi of course is the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter which is approximately 3.14. i is the variable denoted for the imaginary number sqrt(-1).

The expression e^(i*pi) means e to the i times pi power. It turns out that this expression is exactly equal to -1. It is really mind boggling. You take two transendental numbers (meaning they having an infinite number of decimals and cannot be expressed by any rational algebraic expression) and an imaginary number and you end up with the tidy answer of negative one.

The point that Ozy was trying to say that religious folk often make is that because of this unique relationship, there had to be something to design it.

Its an interesting concept I think Pythagoras was all into the whole numbers =god thing--- and in a large way i can see why you would make god a number because numbers are the same in any language-- so truly numbers would be the first language and the last--- the root of all rythm so to speak the cause of all our effects--- numbers make solid and abstract the physical concepts of the universe--- thats pretty godly :O-- doesnt necessarily imply a maker tho :O-- we just think because we are born everything must be born i think.

It is (about 50 minutes vs an hour and a half) but my friends are too goddamn lazy to walk from the train station to where we chill, so I take the bus.
