    Default Video Settings Bug?

    Does anyone else encounter a problem where you go in and change and apply new video options (resolution, vegetation quality, effects quality, etc), which successfully take, however, as soon as you close out of the whole game, and enter in again, the options revert back to the original ones you had before the changes? Can anything be done about this?

    Are you using a mod?

    Yes, Lands to Conquer.

    the game doesn't apply the settings to the right preferences file.

    Do the following:
    rename landstoconquer.cfg landstoconquer.cfg.bak

    copy medieval2.preference.cfg

    rename the copy landstoconquer.cfg

    add to the top of the config file:
    [features]
    mod = landstoconquer

    Yeah, I'm experiencing the same problem, but I don't have any mod. I have the original version of Medieval II with patch 1.2 (clean install and all). Do you have a solution? Thanks

    Odd.

    I've never heard of this particular problem appearing unmodded.

    I can only suggest that you open the preferences file in notepad and make the additions yourself (back up first!)

    Most of the syntax should be self explanatory (1 is on, 0 is off; most controls are 0 < x < 100; others are absolute (eg AA); resolution is horizontal space vertical etc)

    Damn, I don't know anything about this stuff. This is my preferencedoc. from Medieval II:

    [video]
    widescreen=0
    [game]
    allusers=1
    [io]
    file_first = true

    I would be really thankful if someone could do this for me. I don' want to change any controls, only the graphical settings. This is what I want (sorry if this is rude ):

    Shader Version : Version1
    Battle Map Resloution: 1024*768
    Campaign Map Resolution: 1024*768
    Anti-Aliasing: *2
    Texture Filtering: Trilinear
    V-Sync: NO
    Widescreen: NO
    Unit Detail: High
    Building Detail: High
    Vegetation Detail: Medium
    Effects Detail: Medium
    Grass Detail: Medium
    Campaign Shadows: YES
    Texture Quality: Medium
    Shadow Quality: NO
    Brightness: somewhere in the middle
    Bloom: NO
    Reflections: NO

    I would be very grateful of someone could do this. Maybe giving one example would be enough... And giving me the codes or whatever for these things. I mean for example the code for Unit Detail...

    That's odd.

    Are you running vista, perchance - that file does not seem to be correct (empty, likely due to a privileges issue)

    No, I don't have Vista, just WinXP

    PC 3.0 GHz processor Pentium 4
    Nvidia Graphics Card 6200 (memory 512 MB)
    RAM 1 GB

    There's nothing wrong with my pc. I've installed a clean Medieval II Total War and followed the instructions to install patch 2 (final one). That's it. You had to install the game, download the patch, unpack it in the Medieval file itself and install it. Then you get some new files. You have to use one of the bat-files to unpack a whole lot of other files (36000 files). But before you start your game, you have to delete two files that will cause crashes if not deleted. Finally you have to change something in the 'preferences file':

    [io]
    file_first = true

    This is needed to prevent the game from changing the file to the original content after one run. At least that's what the site says. You also have to click in properties of the 'preferences file' to be sure the file is 'read only'.

    Then you can start the game and play. Everything works just find and these are the same instructions as on the official Total War website, so...
    On this page you can find the instructions I used to install the patch.

    I hope someone can help me out. It's not a serious issue. It's just irritating to change your video settings again every time you start your game.

    Try removing [io]file_first = true - it (and unpacking) are not necessary except for modders.

    LOL, I haven't tried your possible solution yet. I first tried to deselect the "only read" box in properties of the "preferences file". I run Medieval II, adjusted my settings, quit and restart the game and the changes I did before the quit didn't go to default. I tried to run a campaign and a battle... No crash. I guess everything is in order now.

    Thank you all for your help, I appreciate it.
