    Default Voulgier usefulness?

Haven't had the time to do much testing on this, but maybe someone can help: I'm playing a French campaign, and I've noticed that the voulgier militia is *much* more expensive while having less men and lower stats than, say, spear militia... they're supposed to be good against armour, but they don't stand a chance against dismounted knights with similar training cost.

So what are they good for - besides emptying my treasury?

PS: I have similar doubts about the higher-tiered pike militia, which has even lower stats.

Voulgier, Obudshaer, Swordstaff Militia and Obudshaer are good at both anti-infantry and anti-cav roles. The spearwall formation and spear bonus makes them good against cav as well as thier high mass. Their ap bonus to their weapons and fast secondary attack animation makes them good against infantry as well, but not as good as comparable sword and shield infantry who are more specialised anti-infantry troops.

Pikes are deadly against cav due to their high mass, spearwall formation and attack.

Voulgier, Obudshaer, Swordstaff Militia and Obudshaer are much better if you use them out of their spearwall (i.e. their secondary attack). Not only that but the AI uses them much better this way too, since they walk the same speed as regular infantry and don't get left behind.

Totally agree, I've modded shieldwall out for them too

I love my swordstaff militia in my Denmark game.

out of spearwall they are like shock troops, even work great against cavalry when in loose formation.

Could you show me what to do on which line to remove spearwall? I never use it for them, and the AI obviously needs it removed.

the problem with pikemen is that alot of the men pick up their swords and many doesnt attack when the units are standing at the pikes.
They still work agaisnt cavalery but takes more losses than needed and they are very bad against infantry.

I use B-tools to mass edit EDU, then just sort units by infantry and heavy categories and it's easy then, just find formation line and delete 'shieldwall'. I've also added schiltrom formation for them too.
